In this release, the NEPs are after the credits like the Dragon Box.
So the Dragon Box might have been taken as the best starting base and then processed to clean things up enough for a Blu-ray release while trying not to go too far.

From memory of today's episodes, I think it's the muffled Dragon Box sound that has been a bit cleaned up, anyway it sounds closer to the DB box sound than to the broadcast audio if I judge by that sample video.

I'm pretty sure I would have had a reaction if it was like the broadcast audio, I would have been surprised and like "wow, they made the sound so clear, it's so nice, it seems like it was recorded just yesterday!"

Thank you for the clearification!
Apart of me was wondering if these are uncompressed Dragon Box mastes with some cleanup but even still it even look clearer than the Uncompressed Z Boxes.

Original Broadcast: OP>Episode>NEP>Credits
Dragon Box: OP>Episode>Credits>NEP

Did the audio sound super crisp, or a bit muffled.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's been a problem with OG DB, Z, & GT since the DBoxes, as Toei apparently switched the order of the end credits & NEPs to match the more modern placements of them in other shows, even Toei's. I remember MistareFusion stating that was a thing on FUNi's DBoxes for Z as well.
supersaiyamangod wrote: Tue Nov 22, 2022 7:47 pm What are the odds of funimation/crunchyroll receiving these transfers?
It's possible. I'll be honest, if another country did good Z BRs before them, I'm willing to be FUNi would've chosen to get masters from them years ago instead of doing it themselves. So, if Crunchyroll wants to rerelease the franchise on BR & catches wind of the French remasters & deems them good enough, they might just decide "fuck it" & get those. I certainly wouldn't mind. I trust the French more than I trust the folks leftover from FUNi after the rebrand at this point, tbh. I just hope we get the second opening this time. Hate that we didn't get it because FUNi NEED clean openings for some reason for Dragon Ball.

Agreed. And, of course they'd be. FUNi have 3rd gen duplicated prints &, while the DBoxes are only in 480p, they're sourced from 1st gen masters from Toei's film stock. And even at 480p, those DBox masters are still better than FUNi's, it seems, especially with clean-up & color correction.
Only dubs that matter are DB, Kai, & Super. Nothing else.

The date for OG Dragon Ball is super interesting - 15th of December is around the rumored time for the new Dragon Ball anime announcement.

Also, I can't believe I'm saying this but looks like I'll be buying upscales...

When an upscale is done well, it's good enough to buy. I've bought enough upscales from Viz Media to definitively say that.

I think he was referring to one release that had the uncompressed DragonBox masters put directly into bluray and not whatever "remastered" things funimation put out. Keep in mind that despite being third gen prints, Funimation's film stock looks stunning when scanned properly, as demonstrated by Kineko Video when they scanned some og Dragon Ball episodes.
Funimations Z bluray releases are all based on the same HD scan they did back in early 2010s.
I enjoy tinkering with video and audio.

Solid upscale aside, they did an excellent job with the color correction, especially in the blown out episodes.

Is there more footage on the sides on the Dbox?

Wow, I hadn't really been paying attention, but these look excellent. I'm sure extreme purists can probably nitpick something here or there, but I'm not sure I've seen any official DB remaster this good. I hope they do Z, not just because it'd be great, but also to laugh in the face of the shitty anniversary blurays.

This color correction is really good. its kind of hilarious that the two biggest distributors Funny and Toei always get the colours really wrong. Funny with overblown contrast and saturation while Toei loves to put some weird green yellow colour grade on the image.

it's really refreshing to see someone do it right (on an official release).

What impresses me most about this release is that the video team here actually took the time to do what Toei (and Pony Canyon) didn't back in the early 2000's when doing the transfers for the Dragon Boxes, as in color correct the footage away from the faded tones and color cast shifts that plague the film masters which the latter were sourced from.
DB collection related goals as of now:

1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)

2.) Collect rest of manga

3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

A little bit more, and less sharp lines.

Someone made a test of the set:

I wonder what happend with this shot
Image

also interesting about the fake grain but it makes sense and I think helps hide some of the would be issues

It appears to be more organic upscale and not AI (wich I am 100% ok with because it keeps original art), and I am pretty sure the color correction really helps ehance the remaster.

I'd be interested in seeing uncompressed shot of the TOEI scan because some of the detail loss on the dragon box could be due to DVD compression/encoding

Apparently AstroRes is used for the upscale.
