Dragon Ball: Chapter Book

Post by SHINOBI-03 » Wed Dec 17, 2008 12:36 pm

Amazon revield some new Dragon Ball books will get published by Viz

It's called Dragon Ball: Chapter Book

Image

I think it's some sort of novel-esque book for children to read, not a manga with pictures.

It's written by Akira Toriyama and Gerard Jones, will be released under Viz Kids catagory

Release dates:

V. 01: August 4, 2009 - $4.99 - 80 pages - 1-4215-2945-9
V. 02: August 4, 2009 - $4.99 - 80 pages - 1-4215-2946-7
V. 03: September 1, 2009 - $4.99 - 80 pages - 1-4215-2947-5
V. 04: September 1, 2009 - $4.99 - 80 pages - 1-4215-2948-3

I'm not interested to buy these books by the way...

Although Some of us might buy it to get their children into the world of Dragon Ball before they are allowed to read the manga or watch the anime.

What the hell? This is the most insane release, why would a kid want to READ Dragon Ball when they can look at all the pretty pictures in the manga!

I'm gonna have to check it out though...

They've done these for other popular SJ books, too, like Naruto and (I think) Bleach or Death Note. I know for a fact that there are some for Naruto, though. Not really a product I'm interested in, but it's nice to see Dragonball getting enough attention in general from consumers that VIZ thinks this is a good idea.

Gerard Jones was the guy in charge of the Viz translation of the manga, if I remember right.

I don't remember which. All I know is that they both involve dead people and they're popular.

I kinda like the idea. For $4.99 it wouldn't hurt to check it out.

Yeah, it seems that's more in line with what he did. Looking him up just now, I managed to find this great interview with Gerard Jones. One of the highlights:
PC: Barb wants to know: "How much would you say you ADAPT and how much do you REWRITE?" In which adaptation is tinkering with sentence structure and rewriting is more like adding a whole new gag in (lawn chairs? veritable smorgasbord?)

GJ: Barb asks a good question. My official title is "rewriter." But...I try to be more of an adapter. My ideal is to convey the original author's intent and style. I want to contribute that and get out of the way. But: there are times that I just couldn't do that without leaving the original incomprehensible. Or adding explanatory footnotes, which Viz very much tries to avoid. It depends more on the specific reference or gag in question.
The interview also confirms that he's the same Gerard Jones as this one. All in all, he seems like a pretty cool guy.

Like Yamcha?

Anyway, might just check this out.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Viz should get over their fear of footnotes.

I think they're referring to the translated novels Viz has been releasing.

Or you could just read "Journey To The West".

But it doesn't have Vegeta or Broli. And Bulma's boobs are censored which means I can't prove to my friends that Dragonball is for hardcore adults!

Fuck "Journey to the West!"

Kidding.

I want to comment about the cover used for the book

It's obvusely drawn and colored by Toriyama himself. I haven't seen that illustration before. It means one of two:

1- There is a Japanese chapter book for Dragon Ball.
2- Toriyama gave it exclusevly to Viz by their demand.

And going with another moment of his short-term memory, Kinto'un is blue instead of yellow.

---
I'll make a bet...

If the Podcast will mention it in the next episode, and Julian will be in it, he will say his catchphrase: "Redundently reduntent" tm...

If not... I'll write in my signature: "Daizenchuu EX Owns, Kanzentai Rules, and I'm a big fat Griffinly loser". And I'll keep it for a month!!

Deal?

That's definitely an older picture. It's in Toriyama's old style, rather than his current one, and Toriyama only colors things on computer nowadays, which that picture doesn't seem to be. I don't know where it's originally from, though.

Interesting, I wonder how many chapters of the original manga each book covers.
Do you think they'll go through all 42 volumes?

Amazing that they have the time and money to waste on something like this, yet let stuff like the Kanzenban and Daizenshuu (well, aside from #1) go by unreleased.

I'm not surprised though, it is Viz. :?

Since a lot of children and young teenagers have been so engrossed with novels such as Harry Potter and Twilight, I am pretty sure VizKids is attempting to get some of the novel money.
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.
