Gero's Name Pun?

Does anyone know what Dr. Gero's name is a play on? Xyex and I were talking about it and he thinks he heard it was play on "gear". Or is it even a play on a word at all? I want to find an answer on here since other sites are soooooo reliable! :roll:

In Cantonese his name is pronounced like "Gay Lo", or a gay guy. But the actual pun? ~_~

I also heard it was a pun on "Gear" a while ago...

Isn't "gero" the sound a frog makes in Japan? Could that be the pun? :?

Yes, gero does refer to vomitting. I believe it's the onomatopoeia for it.

In English, gero seems to refer to the aging process, but that's pronounced with a J sound, and the doctor's name is supposed to have a hard G.

Guess FUNimation went for their own clever pun, then, with their pronunciation. It still sounds retarded, but at least it makes sense :).

I actually didn't find much WRONG with the FUNimation pronounciation except for it being... wrong. But I still like it at least.

Retarded would be like, Dr. Andoydmakah.

With Funimation pronouncing his name differently, I think it stems from how in English, if you some names or words with "ge" in it, you might assume it is pronounced with a "j" sound.

In the Ocean dub, it was pronounced Gy-Ro.

Anyway all I can really think of is Gear, mianly because he works with robots and machines and Gears are used on machines.

Well, it doesn't really add anything, but our dub sometimes referred to him as "Gerot" (same way a French guy would pronounce it)

Yeah, but... She didn't claim that it was. All she said was it made sense to be a pun out of ''gear'', and using whichever pronounciation, the ''pun'' remains there.
