I'm in a predicament (Movie Singles or Double Features?)
I'm wanting to purchase all the DBZ movies again (I don't know why I sold them all!) and I don't know if I should go for the single DVD's or the double features. What would be the better route?

The Double Features. They look better, they (mostly) sound better, and they're in the proper aspect ratio (which, in THIS case, is cropped to widescreen). They also feature the dub with Japanese BGM which, for a few of the movies, makes their dubs somewhat enjoyable.

Re: I'm in a mind boggling predicament...
A lot of people buy the singles because it's in 4:3
Re: I'm in a predicament (Movie Singles or Double Features?)
Unless you want the 4:3 ratio for some reason, the Double Features are the way to go. They're in the right ascpect ratio and they're just plain better looking. Although like the season sets, the picture is sometimes too bright.

Go with the steelcase double features, it would be cheaper that way.

A bunch of the singles on Rightstuf are $4 a pop, though. That's one of the things that's making it hard for me to decide on.LeprikanGT wrote:Go with the steelcase double features, it would be cheaper that way.

I would go with the steelbooks. I'm in the same boat as you, I sold just about all my DBZ movies but I plan to rebuy them now that its been redubbed and all. I myself plan to go for the steelbooks...dragondyle wrote: A bunch of the singles on Rightstuf are $4 a pop, though. That's one of the things that's making it hard for me to decide on.
but then again are they releasing a dragonbox for the movies?

Well that's one of the reasons I sold the movies in hopes of Dragonbox The Movies to come out, but we don't even know if we are getting it anymore, but now I want them back just in case so I still at least have the movies. I would love that release more than anything!KakaR0T wrote:I would go with the steelbooks. Can anyone confirm if FUNimation's cropping actually produces the same aspect ratio and framing that was seen in theatres or on the DBox masters? This is something I've always wondered about. For one, without any reference to go by, wouldn't FUNimation have just done a center crop like they did for the Z series? And I would also assume they cropped it to 16:9, which I didn't think many (if any) theatrical films used as an aspect ratio. The closest they seem to use is 1.85:1, which is similar to the aspect ratio of a widescreen TV but just a little bit wider.
Do you follow the most comprehensive and entertaining Dragon Ball analysis series on YouTube? If you do, you're smart and awesome and fairly attractive. If not, see what all the fuss is about without even having to leave Kanzenshuu:

Same aspect ratio. The framing looks a little different on some shots.Gaffer Tape wrote:Can anyone confirm if FUNimation's cropping actually produces the same aspect ratio and framing that was seen in theatres or on the DBox masters? Double feature Blu-rays are pretty good in my opinion, and are somewhat future proofed...

Movie 8 isn't exactly the best movie to use for comparisons. That was done before the rest of the double features and is substantially brighter than the rest of them, too.

Re: I'm in a predicament (Movie Singles or Double Features?)
Agreed with jjgp, Movies 3 and 8 are the worst out of the bunch. You're better off comparing with another.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Good point. I'd like to see a comparison to a later release. Still, it shows the aspect ratio and framing.jjgp1112 wrote:Movie 8 isn't exactly the best movie to use for comparisons. That was done before the rest of the double features and is substantially brighter than the rest of them, too.

Re: I'm in a predicament (Movie Singles or Double Features?)
I'd go with the double features, In one month I bought 5 of them and I just need the other 2. They look absolutely gorgeous on an HDTV. Although if they do end up releasing Dragon Box The Movies I will still buy it in hopes of having the entire Dragon Ball Dragon Boxes. You can get the double features for really cheap on amazon, (I bought the super Android 13/Bojack for only 5 Bucks) Brand New. Whatever you decide I hope you enjoy.

I have the DVD steel books but I recommend the blu-rays because of the higher quality.
