Gregory

I'm not too far into the manga and I just realized that the Gregory episodes are filler and I just wanted to know: does Gregory exist in the manga?

Heh. When I told my friend this he was disappointed. He was all like,"Awww. Gregory is awesome." But yes, Gregory was a filler character as well as Princess Snake.

You are going to find a LOT of Filler characters along the way, reading the Manga. I would try to list...but I'm sure someone would be annoyed by it and or I wouldn't list them all.

Filler can be awesome - but it usually isn't. I'd rather have no filler than risk crap-tacular filler

Not all fillers are bad. The Anoyachi Budokai was really awesome along with Goku and Piccolo learning to drive, that was hilarious! Fillers really don't bug me, except for one: the Garlic Junior Saga.

 The people who made the anime created Gregory very well, otherwise, it'd seem that Goku didn't do very much at Kaio's...

Fillers in Drgaon Ball/Z don't bug me at all. I loved that one filler where Goku falls off Snake Way. That was fun to watch. :) I haven't seen the later episodes of Dragon Ball Z in so long that I can't really remember the fillers from them. :? I am just glad DB/Z doesn't have any ultra long fillers that last entire seasons like Naruto at the moment. I don't know why people constantly see filler as a bad thing. If the manga and anime were exactly the same in every way, it would be boring to read the manga after you have seen the anime and vise-versa. The filler makes it more interesting and gives you something to compare to the manga. But there are some filler (in any general series) that are bad because they can create plotholes or contradict other events/characters/places/ideas.

I agree with Yi Xing Long about anime being too much like the manga being a bad thing. I found a lot of early Naruto boring because, aside from the small filler scenes here and there, it was enough like the manga to give me a "Been there, done that" feeling. I find filler extremely refreshing because it's something I don't know. =D

However, there can be bad filler. Much like YXL, I like filler, but I know about bad filler.

Gregory's one of those cases where filler wasn't merely added to take up space, but was continually included in other episodes. If my foggy memory serves me right, that is...

But even though he was included, he was still there just to take up space.

The worst fillers are -

-Smoke clearing
-Angry staring
-Powering up for 15 minutes
-Useless commentary
-Endless Punching-And-Missing

The Cell Game personifies those all really well. Pick up one of the DVD's and the corrosponding Volume of Manga, and you will see what I mean.

 You forgot the anime dragging out the battle between SSJ Goku and Freeza for 20 freaking episodes! That's one of the only things I dislike about the anime, the fight scenes are way longer than the manga's.

And the Garlic Junior saga...

But now we have filler episodes that are almost unwatchable :o

I liked the filler in the Cell Games. I didn't like the Frieza filler, though.

Was there any filler when Trunks fought Frieza and King Cold?

I've actualy enjoyed what I've seen. << It seems part of the problem is people who've read scanslations of the time-jump and are impatient to see 15 year old Ino in anime format.

I, on the other hand, have only read the manga as far as Shounen Jump's released it in the US, so I have all the time in the world.

Though I'll admit some of the Naruto filler I've seen... There's good filler that actually accomplishes something (Fuuma arc, Sakura realises Kabuto is evil even if it wasn't him at the time) and.. yeah (hot springs ep in the Find Tsunade arc).

Did that fight not consist of the 5 things I listed? "Fake Deaths" aside...

Oh yeah. In the Manga, it consists of Freeza shooting a beam, Trunks shooting the "Burning attack" and Freeza being killed.

I actually novelized that chapter, if you'd like a read.

Akira Toiryama did create Gregory though, didn't he? Even if he is filler material, Toriyama still created him, it's still official in a way. Pikon is filler but he's still a good character. Same goes for most of the other people from the other world.

Freeza kills Karugo in the manga but in the anime it's Dodoria. Such blatant things can be different in the manga than in the anime.

You forgot another hateful category of filler and that's flashback, it can be ok sometimes, but the Freeza saga has clips from less than 5 episodes before. Like on Pahos of Frieza. Lot's of wasted episode time there used up.

I actually do not really like the Garlic Jr saga, it's all long stuff for me.

I think it's really silly how you use "Pikon," but spell out "Karugo" :P.

Please note that we *do* have an on-going filler-discussion topic, which can be found right over here.

To address a question, yes, it seems as though Gregory was indeed developed by Toriyama, himself. There's some sketches in Son Goku Densetsu.

Silly because I used a dub name and a Japanese name? I didn't know Karugo's dub name.

Maybe I'm mistaken. :?
