Departure from Super Saiyan Forms

We already had the beginnings of this phenomenon in the original 42 volume Dragon Ball manga, when Gohan reached his ultimate level thanks to an older kaioshin. This level was the maximum level of power Gohan could achieve. From then on, this level was exclusive to Gohan, until the Super Hero movie in which it was revealed that Piccolo also received his Ultimate level, though we'll have to find out how the two Ultimates differ.

Dragon Ball Super has also slowly started to move away from introducing new ssj forms, in the current direction Goku and Vegeta are going their own paths that are not tied to developing more levels of SSJ. Goku and Vegeta are now developing divine techniques, namely ultra instinct and ultra ego. It has come to the point where Vegeta no longer needs to imitate Goku in his development to keep up, this whole process was started at the power tournament when Vegeta realized that he was not suited for the Ultra Instinct techniques and started to follow his own path.

Vegeta couldn't keep a calm heart while fighting, so mastering the angel technique was impossible for him. Goku, on the other hand, had a much calmer nature and heart making it easier for him to learn the technique. Vegeta after the Moro saga when despite training on Yardrat, mastering spirit control and then forceful spirit splitting which was a perfect technique for Moro, but not enough to surpass Goku who mastered Ultra Instinct. In the current story, Vegeta matched Goku by mastering the opposite technique for Ultra Instinct, which resonates with Vegeta's turbulent nature. Ultra Ego draws its strength from conquering his fighting spirit, and the fact that Vegeta conquered himself with the damage he received while Ultra Instinct makes his body move on its own allowing him to avoid any threat.

While SSJ forms currently are still transformations necessary during combat, they are slowly being replaced by Ultra forms. The SSJ forms as they are now, are no longer considered forms for ultimate combat. Gohan, Goku, and Vegeta all follow their own paths as warriors, with Gohan moving away from his Saiyan tree of development, Goku focusing on a technique that will make him the ultimate martial arts master, and Vegeta mastering the powers of the God of Destruction thanks to his Saiyan warrior instincts.
