Post by SaiyaMel » Thu Aug 02, 2007 6:13 pm

Some time ago i've seen a screen shot of Vegeta flipping off (think from the Namek/Freeza arch),,, anyone have it?

Thanx in advance.

CRAP! I have a really good screencap of it, but it's on my old laptop, which is nearly impossible to do anything with -_- I still have thousands of files I've yet to transfer.

I'll see if I can get something. If someone beats me to the punch, more power to 'em.

What is "flipping off"? I may have it but don't know what that is.

A rude and well-known hand gesture in the states in which you raise your middle finger alone and wield it at thy displeasure. It explicitly means "fuck you!".

If I remember correctly a lot of characters do it, including Vegeta, Recoome, Tenshinhan, Yamcha, and Kuririn.

It was on a manga cover someone put up here not too long ago, it should still be floating around somewhere.

Yamcha gave Tenshinhan the bird when they first met.

You guys DO know that the finger doesn't mean anything in Japan right?
Just making sure. It can be used for anything.
Example, in this shot from TM! OVA Washu is giving the bird after just explaining why her invention is "so perfect!"
Image I imagine in that context it was used as a victory symbol.

Though given the fact that everytime in DB/Z it happens, it's to an opponent, I imagine it was being used in the "original context."

Since america raped japan with those A-bombs and occupied it, japanese have used all of the hand signs americans do. Mainly the two finger peace sign..

Wow - this took a quick and unexpected turn. :o

How about we go back to talking about cartoons and hand signals, eh?

The two-finger-V is the 'V for Victory' made popular in America during WWII, and thus became popular with post-war Japan.

You learn something new everyday, thanks man. I always thought the two finger sign for victory was a Japanese thing.

And I hate how the hippies spewed their vile peace all over it and turned the Victory V into the "Peace Sign".

It kind of is, now. I've never heard of anyone outside of Japan and western cultures use it - and western cultures always use it as a "peace sign" (unless there's a historical context where it should mean 'victory' like in a war-era movie).

From what I've seen, the middle finger in the Japanese context definitely isn't as offensive as it is in America. It seems to often be used when a character is feeling cocky, and just wants to say, "LOL, I pwnz j00". Though there are times in Dragonball when it seems to be used in the "fuck you" sort of sense, like the manga pic where multiple characters are flipping off Cell.
