When did Bulma start smoking?

Finally picked up Z Season 7 and GT Season 1 (I can thank FYE and their Buy one get one free on Anime Boxsets), and the scene where Gohan visits Bulma for a discuise. She reaches for soem cigs and begins smoking them

. Was this the first time she's shown doing this?

I think that instance you mentioned was the first instance of Bulma smoking. She must have just gotten addicted to that sweet, sweet nicotine aroma that exuded from her father's lab and deciden to light up in the seven years between Cell and Buu.

Interestingly, in Mirai Trunks' world, Bulma is a smoker, so mabye it was inevitable that the main Bulma would end up as one.

Maybe Vegeta and baby Trunks just stressed her out to much so she took up her fathers bad habits... Or maybe its living with her ditzy blonde mother.

It could be just a way to show that she is now an "adult" officially. Even though she was older than the bunch, well, older than Goku, she always acted very young, so yeah.

Toriyama drew Bulma smoking on the title page for chapter 5, though the cigarette was edited out in the kanzenban release. So, I guess she was a teenage smoker... what a shame.

The age you're allowed to start smoking in Japan is ages 20 or something, if anyone here is a fan of Ichigo Mashimaro, remember how they did Nobue in the anime? Changed her from a 16 year old smoker and drinker to a 20 year old.

But yeah, Toriyama often has characters smoking throughout his works. Smoking's his favorite guilty pleasure.

Don't know what Slump's edits are (aside from the blazingly obviously "Super Punch"

), but kids are smoking all the time in it. It's done in typical rebellious/casual style whenever kids do it.

Ironically, Mamejiro (from Mamejiro, not Slump) refuses to smoke as a sign of showing off that he's a punk. The reason: it's bad for your health.

Back to Dr Slump, Toriyama mentions his ideal day would consist of no deadlines, a cigarette and, IIRC, a cup of coffee.

The image was completely redrawn, not edited. Maybe it was Toriyama's decision, or perhaps Shueisha MADE Toriyama redraw the picture. But I don't see why they couldn't've just edited out the cigarette if that was the case. I don't see why there was a need to redraw it

Not that I'm complaining. I would've liked to see MORE redrawn chapter titles.

Hmmm, for reference, does anyone know if the VIZ BIG version has this edit too? It'd be pretty funny if we actually have something edited less than the Japanese version.

I flipped open my VizBig, and the cigarette is indeed right there in Bulma's supple, cherry-re... greyscale lips.

I was going to clarify that it was redrawn, but you beat me to it! This wasn't the only title page that was redrawn, there are in fact a couple that were redrawn. I remember chapter 86 was also redrawn, but I can't remember any of the other ones right now.

I know they cut Peasuke's penis in a panel. Forgot exactly where, but it's a scene where he goes swimming naked and has a bizarre lack of anything between his legs in the Viz version.

Aha!! it IS redrawn!! I noticed that by the coloration of the image.
It was more like how the Kanzenban covers are colored than back in late 80's/early 90's
