The one scene that is SO much better with the Kikuchi score

Post by TVfan721 » Thu Oct 29, 2015 12:37 pm

The scene where Goku sacrifices himself to get rid of Cell.

The Kikuchi music they use for this scene is PERFECT. Why did Kikuchi never use this theme in the original version?

The Yamamoto score used there fit the scene better, in my opinion.

If I'm not mistaken, that track was used for the first time on movie 7? I'll never be able to hear that and not think of the Genkidama at the end of the Boo arc.

It wasn't up to him he just composes the score. The sound director is the one that places it

As much as I like the Yamamoto score, I think the Kikuchi replacement would have been equally as good, if they had more of his music from the original DB available digitally (in short, Pre-DBZ). Too often the replacement music was stuff from the M7XX Series.

Like I said in another thread, his best music was stuff from the original series that never got released.

I do agree, but I think that's just because I'm a sucker for that song in general. One of Kikuchi's best, that's for sure.

Yeah, it's used in movie 7, in the Genki Dama scene too. One of my favorite DB pieces.

Did Miyashita Shigeru leave Toei or did Toei choose themselves a new person in charge of music placement?

In Z, it was used for Boo's death. Made the scene amazing.

The scene where Freeza is torturing Krillin after having impaled him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULD9w8va9sk

The track used here just captures the despair of the moment so well.

That good ol' M1420 score. I was watching my Season 2 Kai DVD, and they used this exact piece of music twice in the Frieza Saga. If anyone else here has the Manga UK Blu Ray you'd know that they switched the score on disks 3 & 4 from Yamamoto to the Kikuchi score. Anyways, back on to the scenes where they used said piece of music. They use M1420 when Goku starts charging up the Spirit Bomb against & again in the aftermath of the Spirit Bomb where Goku & Piccolo resurface from the water.

I honestly think Kai's score was almost as good. It doesn't capture the despair as well, but it's a lot more emotional, I feel.

Hell, yeah. The choir-less rendition of Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle main motif. Also, something about the usage of the second piece during that scene is hilarious, given that it's one of the renditions of Kami's theme from Dead Zone. It's like the music's going "Where is your God now!?" or something.

I'm a strong Faulconer supporter, but even I can admit that scene is a million times better in the original Japanese version and Kai.
"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

I fully disagree. That track (M1420) doesn't capture Goku's fatalistic sense and apology. It sounds like they're trying to make the scene moving and heroic, but I think it's a shock and desperation that the scene is actually about. Also, the music keeps playing even while Krillin screams Goku's name, which awfully lessens the impact that the moment originally had. It even drones on after Goku and Cell arrive at Kaio's planet and kills the surprising amusingness.

I find the Z version far better than that. It was perfect.
