I just finished this a couple of hours ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLJRUkmv45Y
Song: "Who We Are"
Artist: Red
It was inspired by an AMV creator called "Smac" who made a DBZ AMV with the same song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLDUNJrTmzE
I replicated his editing with the overuse of cross dissolve transitions and some ken burns here and there. Smac's AMV is one of my favourite Dragon Ball AMVs so I decided to make one similar to it with the most recent Dragon Ball Super arc. I'd love to hear some feedback!

Thank you! I'm really happy to hear that it inspired you to start making your own DBS AMV. I'll look forward to it.
Re: DBZ AMV's
I just recently finished an AMV of mine and would love to hear some comments on it! It's a tribute to Chi-Chi:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umF62bL9eQ8
Some background: As part of my psychotic mission to make a vid about each major DB character, Chi-Chi had to come up eventually. This is actually my second crack at an AMV for the character, my first using the song Isn't It Midnight by Fleetwood Mac (a song which has frighteningly relevant lyrics for the subject). A lot of my videos could probably use some touch-ups as I slowly improve as an editor, but that one needed a MAJOR overhaul. I hated it; hindsight allowed me to see it as painfully boring and how it actually made the character look lame. That masterpiece can be found here for anyone interested: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-iK2Z ... 8tSHc/view
So naturally it was at the top of my list to do-over, and I decided to re-think the way I approached it. I like Chi-Chi (though I can see why others wouldn't) but I hated the way I made her seem in my previous video. I concluded that it may have been due to me focusing entirely on her when her actual arc is sort of dull. I realized that I only like her in the show due to her attachment to Goku and Gohan. So that's what I tried to do here: use those two and their epic fights as a framing device to showcase her relationships with them (the factor that I decided made her character interesting). She's sort of what they are fighting for and their thoughts of her energy kind of fuel them I guess is what I was going for. I'm not sure if that was totally successful, as the over-the-top fighting footage of the guys and the uber-dramatic song coupled with her scenes may not work as well in practice as they did in my head. The ending proved difficult as well due to the final seconds of the song not allowing much leeway. Of course it was certainly lot of fun to edit as the framing device allowed the direction of the project to be more open-ended than my previous attempt.
Anyway, if you do check it out let me know what you think! Positive or constructive comments about either the concept or my editing are both appreciated.

Awesome work Netter75! The last AMV of yours I watched was the Yamcha "Until The End" video and you've improved a lot since then just by looking at this new one. Great job!
I recently started making an AMV on the Goku Black arc and I just released a short teaser of it. I'm happy with it so far and I'm curious to see what you guys think of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N736QYH_TpI
I'll have the full version done either sometime soon or later on if I discover that i'll need more footage from future episodes.

Also your teaser is really good, the flow and timing are fantastic. The bits immediately following the 0:28 mark grabbed me in particular. I haven't been following Super ever since the first saga, but your vid has actually got me sort of pumped and interested in watching this latest arc. Looking forward to when the full version comes out!

Not quite an AMV but I wasnt sure where else it would fit, it may have been posted but I personally just saw this. Not my work but this person did an AMAZING JOB making the Opening Song into 2D sprites.

That was awesome. My only complaint is the mixing of sprite styles in one scene. I can't complain about the outifts or anything.GodKaio-Ken wrote:Not quite an AMV but I wasnt sure where else it would fit, it may have been posted but I personally just saw this. Just saw this the other day. Man, I love that song and I love the movie even more.
Re: DBZ AMV's
I LOVE that video. Maybe its just me, but I always thought those cheesy 80s pop-rock songs would work REALLY well with DBZ for some reason. I messed around with a video using footage of the first three DBZ movies for a while using the song Thunder in Your Heart (from the movie Rad, the eptiome of cheese-filled 80s sports movies) by John Farnham and it meshed really well. The project didn't end up going anywhere, but I still thought it was a good fit.Bansho64 wrote:Just saw this the other day. Man, I love that song and I love the movie even more.
Also over the past few weeks I started going back and redoing some of my weaker videos after taking consideration of the notes I've been given over the past few months, so I figured I'd share them here if anyone is interested:
1. Tien & Chiaotzu Tribute - My Demons (Starset) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuWSb6_SIWk
2. Krillin Tribute- Ghost of Days Gone By (Alter Bridge) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldSf9UdZl_Y (I heard this song and I HAD to make a video out of it, it takes such a dark turn out of nowhere haha)
Any feedback is good feedback if you've got it, and as long as these are at least improvements over my originals I'll call it a win
Also here's a cool one I found posted just yesterday by Smack Zack called Eternal Rivals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXFMiLhqO00. Its a dialog AMV which I think are so cool when they're done right, and this one is done REALLY right. I tried one once and it was such a pain in the ass to get it to even attempt to flow together, so major props to the creator for making it look so effortless!

Re: DBZ AMV's
I thought this was great! The beat sync was superb. Especially with the effects to enhance the beat sync. What was your method for that? Was it a combination of quick zooms and white flashes? I haven't messed with that myself much but I do want to start. The one thing I could criticize about was that the ending of the AMV would have been perfect if throughout the whole AMV you didn't use any footage from after the Saiyan arc. Ending it beautifully with the deaths of Tenshinhan and Chaozu feels less impactful when you've already seen what their future holds in the same AMV. Of course any fan already knows their future, but when creating an AMV, you're taking the audience through a journey. But I still thought the AMV in general was great. I got chills when the music kicked back in and Tenshinhan avenged Chaozu's death. That was a great combination of music, footage, and tension. I also love how you combined the death of Chaozu from Piccolo Daimao with him being knocked out by Tao Pai Pai. It was seamless and really felt like it was Tao that killed him. I only realized it because I recently used that death scene in one of my own AMVs. Great Job!Netter75 wrote:1. Holy crap that AMV was great too! I think you handled Goku and Krillin's friendship better than I did! The parallels to Goku fighting Freeza and Krillin was great! All the parallels you made were great, haha! I'm not a big fan of the speed of the zooms and pans, though. It feels a little too unnatural when you're forcing the audiences eyes to move around so much. It kind of breaks flow and pulls you out of the moment. I can see how that technique might be necessary to try and keep the focus on Krillin when he's in shots that is of the whole group. What I try to do to keep flow natural is choose a direction and stick with it for a couple of scenes until the music or footage demands a change. For example, there's about 10 seconds from minute 2:27 to 2:37 where they're at the Tenkaichi Budokai, I think it may have flowed better if during the Krillin and Goku shots you stuck with zoom ins and when it cuts to Bulma stick to zoom outs. Change the zoom direction when your subject matter changes. The zoom out from the group including Bulma to the sudden zoom in to Bulma alone was a little jarring. Things like that. And of course there are always exceptions to that. It's up to your discretion. I think it's the zooms ins then the zooms out within the same cuts that bothers me. I understand that's to sync it with the beat, but you sacrifice flow. It's a hard thing to keep balanced. And maybe it's just my preference to not go that fast and zoom in too deep or sudden since I tend to use slower songs. Maybe I'm just not used to it. It was a great AMV regardless! I still loved it!Netter75 wrote:2. Re: DBZ AMV's
Thanks a lot for the detailed feedback! You bring up a lot of points regarding the technicals as well as the broader story of each vid I hadn't considered but should start thinking about.
[Edit: I misread what you wrote initially; rephrase:] I hadn't thought about leaving out shots from post-Saiyan arc, though not referencing them probably would have been more effective in ending the video with more finality. However, I wouldn't feel right about leaving out some of those kickass scenes from King Kai's planet and the Z movies, with Movie 3 being one of the only time they fight together. This does give me the idea that referencing the Nappa fight at the beginning of the video was probably not a wise idea though. The intention was to bookend it with that fight as its their defining moment (to me anyway), but its not fully realized and takes away some of the impact at the end by reminding the viewer of what is coming.
On the Krillin vid, thanks for the compliment. I've been a fan of your "When I See You Again" Krillin AMV for a while, so it means a lot even if I disagree . Your advice on the pans and zooms is very helpful as I do rely on them (sometimes too heavily) to keep the focus and match the song, so I need to get them right! Now that you point it out, I guess my method of implementing them is a little haphazard and and focused on individual shots rather than on the sequence as a whole, so that's something I can start thinking about in the future. In hindsight it is super jarring in a couple spots, especially the aforementioned Bulma shot and again when he rescues 18 from Bio-Broly. As far as the changing of direction in the same shot, its good to hear how that technique come across to a viewer, and it sounds like it is something I need to start phasing out. Like the other pans, it is done to match the song, and it works when it works (typically when done more subtly) but when it doesn't it really bombs and looks awkward as hell.
Thanks again for the comments. They're much appreciated and hopefully I'll be able to learn from them and improve.
Thank you! I don't much care for the song personally, but I picked it because of its pronounced beat. And that's exactly what the menthod was. To sync it to the beat I looked at the audio track for the moment the song spiked and pasted the clip that I wanted to use twice. For the clip to flash I added a Glow effect on one copy and had it fade into the second, trimming the start time of the second and end time of the first to have the fade work. To add weight to the effect I used quick zoom-ins and outs every 2-3 frames. Its interesting because the glow copy is not always in exact sync with the non-glow clip that it fades into, so a strange effect is created where it looks like you've got double-vision for a split second as one transitions to the other. This is pretty easily fixed, but I liked it as it seems to add further emphasis. You can see it at around the 3:00 mark in the two scenes in which Tien and Chiaotzu embrace. I use Sony Movie Studio 12 (Vegas downgrade) for the record. The beat sync was superb. Especially with the effects to enhance the beat sync. What was your method for that? Video & Youtube Link: My Songs & Stories | DBZ AMV | "7 Years" by Lukas Graham
Category: Drama, Character Profile, Sentimental
Anime: Dragon Ball (Original), Dragon Ball Z
Manga: Dragon Ball (Kanzenban), DB Minus from Jaco, The Galactic Patrolman
Song: 7 Years
Artist: Lukas Graham
In my desperate attempt to show the world that Dragon Ball AMVs can be more than just Linkin Park songs with random fight scenes in the background, I've created another beauty! And I have very low confidence so for me to call it a beauty should mean something!
In the song, Graham sings about stages of his life and even mentions his age. It was eerie how close the ages matched with Goku's ages throughout the series. Most of them were only off by a single year. I almost included his actual age in the video, but my typography skills are pretty trash at the moment, lol.
Most are familiar with the series and its story, but there are some elements in the video that may be new to viewers who don't keep up with it. Mainly the manga portions. The beginning of the AMV uses a manga chapter titled "Dragon Ball Minus". This chapter was created by original writer and artist, Akira Toriyama, years after the series ended. 2013 to be exact. The chapter can be found in his most recent One Shot Manga called "Jaco, The Galactic Patrolman". I highly recommend this manga, by the way. Jaco was in charge of making sure baby Goku never reached Earth. He failed obviously. It's available in English from Viz. This is where he came from for those who wondered who he was in the recent DBZ film, Battle of Gods.
The second part fans may not be familiar with is the ending manga sequence. Both the original manga and anime series have Uub riding on Goku's back as they fly away in the distance and the manga ends. But in 2004 the final volume of its re-release, known as the Kanzenban, included a slight alternate ending. That of which you can see in the ending of my AMV.
I love this series very much and I hope I can continue to deliver a variation of new AMVs in a world cluttered with rock songs and DBZ fight scenes.
