Yeah. It's a shame. One Piece is fantastic, but never managed to hook in a stable TV audience. I'm honestly surprised it lasted this long.
Given how One Piece air in the mid 2000's around the same time as Naruto and was dubbed by 4kids. Naruto over shadow it since Naruto had more marketing (I remember the series had a lot of merchandise) and anything dubbed by 4kids outside of Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh was a major turn off by people back then.

One Piece is a great series but I always thought it had less western appeal when compared to say Naruto. It was perhaps a little bit too wacky for its own good at times.

Even compared to the likes of say Bleach too. It's just...weird at times.

Yeah I remember everyone going crazy back in secondary school about Naruto and Bleach but not One Piece, hell I didn't even find out about OP until I left compulsory education and wasn't until I spoke to a couple anime fans did I know of OP. Dragon Ball just seeped in and out in terms of hype once it finished but wasn't until BoG that I personally fell completely back in love with DB but the only downside was there were only a few close friends to share the experience with since the 6th form I attended was quite small. Naruto never appealed to me, eventually watched Bleach never seen a series have such a strong opening arc falter so badly, shame. OP I tried a couple of episodes they were fun but the episode count just killed my enthusiasm and I don't like reading Manga too.

That seems like the correct assumption, a lot of anime really don't transition smoothly when coming into the west. Mainly to due to most Japanese directors and writers not thinking about the western audience's interest in mind.

Well that's why I've always thought Dragon Ball Z was very successful worldwide, compared to a lot of anime I've seen it's very Non-Japanese.

The kind of series it is, super power beings, fighting, aliens, robots, demons etc. That kind of thing appeals to people no matter what country you're from. That's everything that Marvel and DC consist of really.

A lot of the names aren't too Japanese. The humour isn't too wacky. The characters art style and mannerisms aren't over the top or anything. It's all just nice and reserved for the most part.

The irony of this (and I'm not saying you're wrong) is that in terms of art style, setting, most of the names, etc. One Piece is a lot less overtly Japanese than Naruto or Bleach. Some of the humor and little things here and there are blatantly influenced by Japanese culture, but in general it doesn't really conform to what people immediately think of when they hear "anime".

It's somehow simultaneously too Japanese and not Japanese enough.

I agree. Animes like Cowboy bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, and DB are practically geared toward the western audience due to them utilizing western elements and tropes. Along with not going over the top on certain story elements, or making things too intricate is one of the myriad of reasons there so consumable, even though it's from a foreign country. They still feel natural enough to seem like they were made right at home.

One Piece might not ever become popular in US. It's already 800 ep+ and unlike Naruto there's not many fillers you could skip to catch up fast. Add the awful 4kids dub to rub salt in wound, the show is practically dead in US.
Toyotarō: … I get the feeling I’ve just heard something amazing (laughs). Lord Beerus and Whis turn up in Dragon Ball Super, and have become an unsurpassable wall for Goku and the gang. What do the two of them mean to you?

Toriyama: Well… First off, right now I don’t have any plans for Goku and Vegeta to surpass Beerus and Whis.

"Practically dead" is a bit much. The DVDs still sell well enough that Funimation sees value in continuing the dub the series. It does pretty well on streaming services like Crunchyroll and Hulu. The manga is one of Viz's better sellers (though behind the really big hits like Naruto, Tokyo Ghoul, One-Punch Man and...Nintendo-based stuff).

It'll never hit it big with the mainstream in the US, which is sad, but it's pretty healthy within the anime/manga niche.

I agree. I absolutely love the series, but I'll admit it took me awhile to summon the motivation to actually watch it.

I always thought it had the potential to be big. The dub began around the time when Pirates some a big popularity boost because if the success of Pirates of the Carribean.

Perhaps had it had the Funi dub from the start then it would have made something of itself.

Ever since all these anime streaming sites popped up, there hasn't been an anime to really take off in the west. Pokémon, Dragon Ball, Digimon, Naruto, Yu GI Oh, Sailor Moon, Bleach and even Yu Yu Hakusho all had their success before the anime sites came to be.

I wish they pick another show than Tokyo Ghoul. I don't see why it's so popular since there is a lot of merchandise for it when the anime came off as very generic to me. The new Ushio and Tora would work very well on Toonami and I grew up with the old OVA's on VHS.

Anyways back on topic, I'm glad that Super is doing well and Toonami is now at 11:00 PM with Samurai Jack. I hope we don't do seasonal breaks because I feel like that they may hurt the show. This is not the late 90's and the early part of the 2000's when we go on 9 month break with no new episodes. Not to mention I would imagine the TV promos for the Future Trunks saga will be pretty sick.

Attack on Titan, Sword Art Online, Tokyo Ghoul and lastly Fairy Tail is pretty big. Fairy Tail especially is has possibly surpassed Bleach by now

I exaggerated a bit yeah. But One Piece is by far the highest selling manga of all time in Japan, and is a national icon. Compared to local popularity, it's kinda dead in US. Toei and Shonen Jump should have been more serious about promoting it abroad like they did Dragon Ball.

I really think its the protagonist which is a turn off for western audiences. I think there is a fine line in what western audiences enjoy in terms of the goofy/serious mix. However, that's just my opinion.
I personally have tried to watch One Piece multiple times and some episodes I genuinely enjoyed, however Luffy's personality really began to wear on my and I would drop it again after a few episodes.

That drop after Super is considerable, could be because people aren't a fan of what's happeing in Kai at the moment.

It does but at least FUNi is continuing to dub the series
