Dragon Ball Z Burst Limit marks the return of Budokai series creators DIMPS at the reins of a new franchise of beat 'em ups for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Focusing on the drama during such set-piece battles like Goku versus Vegeta's at the end of the Saiyan saga and the duel between Gohan and Cell in the very last instances of the Cell Game, the game promises to let fans of the Dragon Ball Z anime re-live these unreal moments in glorious HD visuals.

Drama Pieces

Drama scenes and pieces are the new customisation element in Burst Limit. An evolution of the capsule system of previous games, they allow characters to be modified to the player's tastes, be it defence-focused or all-out attackers. Examples include Piccolo's regeneration, where Piccolo gains some lost hit points and Kid Gohan's Ultimate Defence, where he is spared from an ultimate attack.

-- Q&A's --

Q: Isn't this just a Budokai 1 re-make?

A: At first it might appear so, but when you start playing Burst Limit you'll realize that this is as an evolution of the series as much Budokai 3 was after Budokai 2. Taking all the elements introduced in the portable Shin Budokai games and adding many more new tweaks to the gameplay makes this the finest Dragon Ball Z beat 'em up to date.

Q: So, I just mash buttons like crazy and I win right?

A: Against the CPU, pretty much, yes. Versus live competitors you might face some challenge. Burst Limit is a very technical game of cancels and reaction. If your opponent knows what s/he's doing, spamming Kamehameha's won't do you any good.

Q: Why does it go only till the Cell Saga?

A: DIMPS says they had to leave the Buu saga out because it introduces so many new characters and gameplay variations like Fusion that the game wouldn't have been out this year. Expect new characters and arenas either through DLC or a new game next year.

I just hope it's more similar to the Budokai series than the Sparking! ones.

The picture shows it doesn't have the FPS camera anymore.

They already even have ingame screenshots? :S They haven't even released the Wii-version of BT3 in Europe yet (which I'm gonna get). Anyway, I hate the Krillin pic, and I don't see a lot of differences with Budokai Tenkaichi 3/Sparking! METEOR :o

Hmm, I wonder. Not just "Frieza", but "Goku", too. If they were using English, shouldn't the Japanese use something Son Gokou? Using FUNimation's spelling of Freeza is understandable since Spike's done it on their website before, but just "Goku" without his last name? Very suspicious...

Anyways, who is developing this game? The only company I saw under "Maker" is Bandai Namco Games. Hmm...a joint effort? Budokai 3-ish shading plus the recent in game quotes system used by Spike seem to make an appearance. They're dubbing it as "'Drama Piece' is the key to victory!", whatever that means. If it means visual over game play, we're all doomed once again. The shot with Goku firing Times Four Kaioken Kamehameha looks bitchin', though!
kvon is an alternative name to Kevin

Oh man, i don't have a x-box 360 or a PS3. :( The game looks interesting, however.

This is really good news for me, finally a DBZ game for the PS3/360. I can't tell much graphics-wise from the scans, but it does look like it will surpass what we've already seen. Since it's a fighting game, the mechanics may not stray very far from the Budokai games. Its still early, but I'm fairly excited.

Slightly off-topic, this game coming out in 2008 makes it an even better year for fighting games. Between this, Tekken 6, the announcement of Street fighter 4 and SC4, its like we're in fighting game heaven.

Does it matter? Freeza and Frieza are both pronounced the same.

Except that so far, every time we've seen it spelled in English in a Japanese game, it's been Freeza. Either 1) this is a fake, 2) they've decided to change the spelling for some reason, or 3) they're getting the localization done early.

Battle Stadium DON begs to differ with you, and that's probably not coming out here. This looks legit. Especially being from NeoGAF

Also looks Super DBZ style. Add in Live play, and I'm all in. I GOT YO NUMBER, EX!

Geez... this looks like its going to be a 2D fighter. Not that I'm complaining. I'll love that but....blegh....I don't know about trying to play a 2D fighter with my 360 controller.

I could have sworn DON used Freeza, but I only played it once...oh well.
