Trying to get DBZ Kai on TV in Norway - need tv ratings, sales numbers, news paper articles etc world wide
Hey there. I'm part of a group of people in Norway who's trying to bring DBZ Kai to Norway. We've got a dubbing studio interested, we've got a translator on board and we've got contacts in a TV channel. But no TV deal. And that's everything Toei's interested in. So, in order to try and convince a TV channel, we're thinking showing some real evidence of how well Dragon Ball revenues. And how popular it is world wide. It'd be nice if people here could help getting me some of these numbers, along with sources!
Here's the plan so far; feel free to bring up more ideas!:
- Ask Derek Padula: 1) about stories (statements) from fans about why they like Dragon Ball Z. 2)if he's got documentation on why Dragon Ball Z has gotten so popular.
Contact Bandai-Namco and Toei Animation, or go online, to get evidence for how much Dragon Ball has made world wide: done.
- Contact Outland, the norwegian company who's currently release the Dragon Ball manga in Norwegian and ask for sales numbers (we tried contacting the old company but they didn't have sales numbers): waiting for reply.
- Ask Carlsen comics, the company who released the Dragon Ball manga in Germany, Denmark and Sweden, about sales numbers: waiting for reply from germany, and sweden, need to contact Carlsen Denmark.
- Contact Viz to ask for sales numbers and revenues: needs to be done still.
- Contact Glénat to ask for sales numbers and revenues: found on webpage.
- Ask crunchyroll and AnimeLab for streaming numbers on Dragon Ball Super: needs to be done.
- Find out how much Battle of Gods and Ressurection F made - along with numbers on how many people attended: links in this thread.
- Link to streaming videos from when some cities streamed Dragon Ball Super in mexico: needs to be done.
- Find streaming numbers for DBZ Abriged: needs to be done.
- Contact FUNImation and ask them about BD/DVD and streaming numbers for all their Dragon Ball shows. And total revenue it's made for them: needs to be done.
- Contact Selection Vision for DVD and BD sales numbers: needs to be done.
- Contact AB Vidéo and Kazé for DVD and BD sales numbers in France, and Germany: needs to be done.
- Find sales numbers for the different dragon ball games released: needs to be done.
- Find tv ratings for Dragon Ball airings in Europe and America; USA (cartoon network,?,?), Mexico; (?), France (TF1, more recent numbers?), Portugal (Sic): USA and France needs ratings still.
- Contact DR TV to ask about tv ratings for Dragon Ball Z in denmark: done, awaiting reply.
- Contact RTL 2 (and other channels) in germany to find out tv ratings for Dragon Ball Z
(who has the rights for Dragon Ball Super in Germany? And who broadcasted DBZ Kai in Germany?): gotten link in this thread.

You may want to look into the sources and such a little further, but this should get you started...sangofe wrote:- Find out how much Battle of Gods and Ressurection F made - along with numbers on how many people attended.
BOG box office numbers according to Wikipedia.
ResF box office numbers according to Wikipedia.
Naturally, Wikipedia is not a reliable source, however there are many sources cited within those sections, which will be worth looking into if you're looking to figure out these numbers.
This is incredibly easy, since the view counters on YouTube are public-facing, and YouTube has been their primary platform for several years now.sangofe wrote:- Find streaming numbers for DBZ Abriged.
As an additional note, if this is a new dubbing production, it may save some money if you get the dubbing company to license the TV edited master Ocean created for Kai 1.0. I know producing a TV edit of your own can cost quite a bit of money, so assuming TV edits need to be made, this could save some money. Naturally, dubbing uncut is massively preferable, but assuming a TV edit does have to be produced, this could save the production a lot of time and money. Funimation did exactly this for their dub of Kai 1.0, so this does have a precedent.
While on this aside, if a replacement score is being considered(Which honestly, I would advocate, at least for Kai 1.0. Kai's Kikuchi score kind of sucks), I would suggest also licensing that from Ocean; again, composing your own score is a lot of money, in fact licensing the original Japanese score is probably some money. Ocean's would probably be significantly cheaper to do than either Japanese or an original score. Just something to consider.

The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

Wow! My first post since ... I don't know ... five years?
Anyway, sangofe old pal needs help!
In terms of German audience nummers and ratings:
A re-run of Dragon Ball got 4,2% in it's target group back in 2014, wich isn't bad at all for this channel:
http://www.quotenmeter.de/n/70079/baere ... -maxx-froh
This says DBZ Kai had 3,1% and DB Super 4,7%. Both aired on a thursday:
https://www.manime.de/news/anime/dragon ... x/0021879/
Pro Sieben Maxx is a pretty tiny channel but it's successful with a specific target audience, thanks to Anime.
Sadly, I couldn't find any numbers of DBZs first run on RTL2, back in 2001/2002. But it was VERY successful and aired quasi on prime time (7:30 PM).
Sales were HUGE for Kaze's lousy DVD releases. However, their DBZ Kai releases on DVD and blu-ray are only okayish (pretty good compared to most Anime-DVD sales, but a little bit disappointing for a Dragon Ball release).
Kaze Anime charts 2013:
https://www.anime2you.de/news/4140/die- ... arts-2013/
I think the first DBZ box was released in 2009 and it was still number 12 in 2013!!!

Toei is aware of how much money they make off overseas sales of their products, as seen here for the fiscal years 2013-2017.

As for the german broadcasts...
´On Monday the 27th of August, 2001, RTL II began broadcasting the second series of the "Dragon Ball" franchise at a time slot that belonged to the previously popular reality show "Big Brother". But the anime genre skyrocketed to new heights at the time on RTL II. "Dragon Ball Z" previously started every weekday at 7:30 PM, after the "Anime-Afternoon" programming already finished for a few hours and sitcoms had been broadcast inbetween. [...] The ratings increased to unmeasurable heights and "Dragon Ball Z" in Janurary of 2002, got a second time slot.

In America, DBZ Kai was a major hit on Nicktoons. It was the number one show on the network and it had the highest series premiere ratings ever on the network.
Even when Kai re-aired on Toonami a few years later, it was still a hit! Kai is still the one and only show on Adult Swim Toonami to hit 2 million viewers on live/same day broadcast. Kai even got extra Saturday night reruns because it did so good.
Unfortunately I was too lazy to find sources, but if you search them up you will definitively find them because I remember these exactly.

I found Nielsen ratings of Dragon Ball Z from its run on Toonami back in 2002 :
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2 ... ps-ratings
I'll look if there are audience numbers for the Hungarian and Romanian premieres of Super.
The source is here :September - Dragon Ball Z Number One on all cable TV.
* Dragon Ball Z was the #1 program of the week on all cable television
with tweens 9-14, boys 9-14, and men 12-24.
* The Wednesday, Monday and Tuesday telecasts of Dragon Ball Z
ranked as the top 3 programs in all of television - broadcast or cable -
for delivery of boys 9-14. (The closest competitor was CBS' Survivor
Thailand.)
