Interesting coincidences regarding voice actor choices

Post by coola » Sat Mar 09, 2019 3:15 pm

Looking at post in topic "Why wasn't Raditz voiced by Masako Nozawa? " that Shigeru Chiba both voiced 1st Goku rival in DB (Pilaf) and Z (Raditz) made me remember another interesting tidbit, Ryusei Nakao voiced both Tambourine in DB and Freeza in Z, they both killed Kuririn and pushed Goku to anger he never felt before. Its probably coincidence, sine Kuririn death happened long after Nakao-san was cast as Freeza, but interesting one :)

The franchise is no stranger to double roles. Apart from Nozawa and Chiba:

- Hiromi Tsuru voiced Bulma and her sister Tights
- Mami Koyama voices Arale and Lunch
- Masakazu Morita voices Tarble and Whis
- Ryusei Nakao voices Cooler and Frost, as well as Freeza

Granted, half of these are coincidences and half of them are deliberate.

I think so far only confirmed deliberate double role choice, is Mayumi Tanaka as Yajirobe, when Goku said "You know Yajirobe, you have similar voice to Kuririn". If Akira Toriyama again appear in one of cons in USA/Europe someone need to ask him, if thats true he made that as apology to Mayumi Tanaka for killing Kuririn?

Bin Shimada voices Dyspo and Broly. Both got the opportunity to throw Freeza around, one after another

While Tanaka voiced both characters with the same overall performance, at least she made them sound distinctly different by playing Yajirobe's voice more exaggerated and accented.
DB collection related goals as of now:

1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)

2.) Collect rest of manga

3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

There are some interesting coincidences in the brazilian portuguese dub:

- An actor called Daniel Figueira voiced Kid Trunks in Kai, and Kyabe in Super.

- Vagner Fagundes, the voice of Yajirobe and adult Gohan, also voices Luffy in One Piece, who shares the same japanese actress with Yajirobe, Mayumi Tanaka.

- Talking about the Bardock and Raditz trope, Bardock shares the same VA with Raditz, Wellington Lima, who also voices other DB characters, as Tao Paipai and all Majin Buu's forms.

- As the japanese and Funimation casts of Dragon Ball have roles in One Piece, the brazilian cast also have roles in One Piece too.
Not only with Gohan and Yajirobe VA being Luffy, but Goku's VA being Sanji, Trunks's VA being Zoro, Kale's VA being Nami, Oolong's VA being Robin, Krillin's VA being Chopper, Pilaf's VA being Buggy, and a few others too.

-Nam and Eis Shenron share the same VA in both japanese and FUNimation dub
-Tien and Rage Shenron share the same VA in both japanese and FUNimation dub
-Erasa and Sheela share the same VA in both japanese and FUNimation dub
-Cooler and Rildo share the same VA in FUNimation dub. Both characters have metalic transformations
-Maloja, Zoonama and Haze Shenron share the same japanese VA. All three were known for doing bad things in villages

Peter Kelamis being cast because he sounded similar to Ian James Corlett, then coincidentally being capable of doing very Nozawa-like screams when it came to the movies.

Videl and Pan share the same voice actress in Japanese too.

It's interesting that while Tenshinhan is mostly absent in the Boo saga, his VA Suzuoki Hirotaka plays the Budoukai announcer, replacing Utsumi Kenji.

The biggest coincidence of all has to be the connection between FUNimation's Cell and Westwood/Ocean's Cell.

Dameon Clarke's sister dated Dale Wilson and it's because of Wilson that Clarke got into acting to begin with.

I'm not sure if this counts:

• Christopher Sabat (FUNi) and João Loy (European Portuguese) share 3 characters: Vegeta, Piccolo and Recoome.

• In the Hungarian dub of Super, Vegeta and Kyabe, who have like a teacher and student relationship, are voiced by brothers Roland Czeto (b. 1989) and Adam Czeto (b. 1995) respectively.

• In the German dub of Kai, Goku was voiced by Amadeus Strobl (b. 1994), the same voice actor who voiced him as a kid on Dragon Ball GT's dub.

Daisuke Gori played a shitload of side characters. Off the top of my head I know he played Ox King and Mr Satan.

Also, didn't Shigeru Chiba play both Garlic Jr and Pilaf, just like Chuck Huber did in the dub?
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Akira Kamiya originally played Garlic Jr. in the film. We don't know why he didn't reprise the role, but Chiba took over for the filler arc (and I believe has kept the role for things like games ever since then).

Don Brown also voiced Garlic JR for Dead Zone and Pilaf for the BLT dub
