The Black Bricks were VERY over-priced, an extremely limited release, came with a statue that just changed out Goku's face and arm, and were ostensibly made to celebrate the 30th birthday of Z yet still contained a lot of Funimation's BS practices. Not to mention packaging that can seriously damage the discs. It was the contradiction of it being touted as a Super Ultimate Anniversary Release, yet it was Just Another Funi Z Release with Gold Foil packaging.

The Steelbooks meanwhile are only slightly more expensive than the Blu-Ray Seasons yet are FAR more accessible than the Black Bricks. I can actually recommend this release to people based on the 4:3 and availability alone.
If you get all 9 steelbooks for $40 thats $360 which is pretty much the same as the black boxes minus the book and figure (I sold both and got my set down to $75) but you get the steelbook packing. The Discs can be safe with a $5 fix of plastic sleeves (we shouldn't have to do this but I'd also buy steelbook protectors if I got these). I do think it's funny that it was meant to celebrate the 30th anniversary but was very U.S centric

Although, there is still no sign of a standard release, and these Steelbooks are selling out. Do we have any confirmation that the 2013 blus are out of print now? I could see them shifting to these disc in the future, but if the 2013 blus are still selling well...

It's getting a standard release in the UK, which means that's not far behind in the US.

Yup, Funimation loves to milk the life out of this series. Wouldn't be surprised if they put out standard Blu-Ray sets much like what Manga UK are releasing in about a year. Madman will probably do the same.
Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

Did they fix the zoom in issue in that episode ?
they did not. these are just the 30th a masters, but with a lower bitrate.
Interesting is there any noticeable difference? These are an option to replace any of my discs if something happens to them so I want make sure.
Yes, they look noticeably worse. Even the fake grain is more smeary. I'll never understand why my bro wanted these, but it gave me a chance to look at them at least

and the steel books if you buy all 9 will cost more than the black bricks did

Is there a way you can get a screen shot? This may be interesting. I'd be glad to match screenshots with the 30th for a 1:1

Wait, so these are somehow a worse transfer of the 30th discs? How did Funimation fuck this up again? All they had to do was use the same fucking disc image. :wtf:

Sounds like it's worse encoding which wouldnt surpise me. I am almost tempted on getting on just to see but a 40 dollar experiment is too much

The people at Funimation are the kind who could accidentally kill themselves getting out of bed in the morning. I think they also messed up the sound mixing in the Buu arc's release of Kai.

Wow so the picture quality is worse then the 30th anniversary set?? Wtf is Funimation even thinking?

Would you say that the picture quality is about the same as the 2013 season sets?

Can confirm that they did. The sound effects sound significantly lower then the voices.

I just got the Steelbooks 1-3 today. The picture quality is better than the 2013 BD Season sets. There is still DNR but is doesn’t look as extreme, and the colors aren’t as over-saturated. I’ve only looked at the beginning of Season 1 thus far, but that one was the worst of the 2013 sets. And of course having the correct AR is a major improvement as well.

Just got the 3 steel books and they do look a lot grainier then the 2013 Blu Rays. From the clips of the 30th anniversary set that I saw on YouTube it didn't have this much grain in it.

The picture quality on these Steel books looks a lot better then the 2013 Blu Rays though.

Image from the New Season BD lol. A friend of mine got the first 3 and the episode I was sent was only 3.5 GB! Almost twice as small as the normal 30th Edition Episode size. They get EVEN WORSE in the Season 1 BD where they cram 39 episodes on 4 discs.

It's a fake grain filter put over the already destroyed footage. Cowboy Bebop Funimation BD did the same thing. it looks awful especially in darker areas

At this point is it even worth trying to convince people these are bad?

There are too many who think it’s good—surprisingly stubbornly—to be able to reduce funi’s success of this remastering.

Personally gonna just let these guys enjoy mediocrity in peace

I am perfectly fine with people enjoying how the 30th Edition looks. It's a crappy remaster, but at least it's uncropped. My main issue is people defending the steel books in particular since they are overpriced and look WORSE than the 30th Edition. 60 dollars for what is essentially a bargain bin Blu-Ray is unacceptable practice

Once again, it is pretty sad, when fan/custom made rips are best option to watch one of most popular shows of all time.
