The picture quality on these Steel books looks a lot better then the 2013 Blu Rays though.
It's a fake grain filter put over the already destroyed footage. Cowboy Bebop Funimation BD did the same thing. it looks awful especially in darker areas
Looks like Funimation overdid it with the fake grain on this set

Edit: are the discs only single layered?

Edit 2: i saw your friend sent you just the episode. Is it a raw file or did they compress it?

So are the masters on these new steelbooks different from the 30th set, or are they just worse quality ?

What it sounds like is same masters, lower bitrate (possibly compressed to a single layer bluray) but nothing confirmed yet.

Why wouldn't they just release the 30th set discs as is ? Did they want to save $$$ on single layered discs instead ?

Uh.... somebody’s got y’all messed up.

Disc one of Season One Steelbook: over 46 GB

EPISODE 001: 4.7 GB

I’m sitting here at my computer looking at this, as I just ripped the disc myself.

These are dual layer BDs, and probably 1:1 copies of the 30th set.

Thanks for clearing that up it seems the episode he got was compressed.

Here is the 30th set info for Season 1 Disc 1

There is still DNR but is doesn’t look as extreme, and the colors aren’t as over-saturated. I’ve only looked at the beginning of Season 1 thus far, but that one was the worst of the 2013 sets. And of course having the correct AR is a major improvement as well.
Yep, that's more or less how I see it. Yes, the 30th Set sucks, but it's still an upgrade over the 2013 Season Sets. We are making progress, even if it is soul-crushingly slow. It only took 13 years, but 4:3 is back as the standard way to purchase and watch DBZ and someone at Funi finally turned down the saturation dial. The sooner we can wash the taste of the 2013 Sets from the mouth of average consumers, the better.

First time Dragon Ball fan as of March 2020. Still learning the ropes. Nothing much else to say,

That's definitely a positive thing i can say about this, at least FUNi got as far as they could with the fake widescreen versions and are now finally getting around to offering a 4:3 option of the series for fans again (almost a decade after the last attempt via the Level sets unfortunately didn't work out. RIP!!!!) flawed though it may be. If i didn't already have the entire series in the Dragon Boxes now this would be an ok-ish alternative even with the numerous issues. I'd take these sets over the Orange Bricks and Season BD's any day.
DB collection related goals as of now:

1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)

2.) Collect rest of manga

3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

I hadn't seen this thread till after I posted in the 30th, so I'll post here as well. These are new encodes. They're way less saturated and I believe the colour grading is correct. The 30th is way oversaturated to the point that it looked like it was glowing and you needed a tint shift to get it right for the first 4 seasons. This has extra grain, but the blur filter they used in the 30th set is gone, though extra grain was added instead to most likely mitigate that sharpening filter. I personally think these look better. If they just didn't capture the footage with that sharpening filter...

There are a lot of wild claims in these threads with no evidence to back them up, and after seeing people in the past falsely claim things like "My US Broly release isn't green" or "Funi fixed Boo Kai's colours", I'm hesitant to believe anything until I see it with my own two eyes.

Back in January, MangaUK came to me and said Funi were putting out their 30th sets in seasonal packaging for the mass market. They wanted to know if they should do that too or go with the old 16:9 release. I told them 4:3, obviously.

I find it very hard to believe Funi would alter said plans in any way. An alerted remaster and authoring job? Lotta money to spend and never mention it.

Prove me wrong, please. I'd love to be wrong. But you know, actual comparison shots and mediainfo would be amazing.

I'm calling bullshit on this until we can get some screencaps. There's enough misinformation getting spread around this thread already.

And you just say this without providing any screenshots...
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I just placed my order for season 1 on Amazon which should be here tomorrow. I don't own the 30th Anniversary set, but I'll compare it to other commercial home releases. I just don't understand the financial incentive to make a new encode; they definitely spent more money than they earned on the 30th, so it would make sense to recoup it this way. If they still had the raw files, they could change them for the better, but A. That doesn't sound like Funimation, and B. People who bought the 30th set would be pissed. An altered set makes no sense to me.

I've been reading about the bitrate thing over on the blu-ray forums, and a couple of people have confirmed it's a false rumour.

It's amazing how easily people are willing to believe stuff without a shred of evidence. Of course Funi are going to use the same discs as the 30th.

Yeah, and did nobody else notice that the title card at the end of the disks still says "30th Anniversary Collector's Edition"? That should have been the big dead giveaway.

Jesus. I thought they'd scrub that all away, which would cause some confusion.

I have the first season. I can confirm that they are just a repackaging with new labels.
