Thanks, my hope is that this tweeting campaign continues to grow so GoAnime see the demand is there and are advised against adding Funimation's dub to their streaming service.

18 hours since I've tweeted this and so far were at 20 retweets, 9 likes and a staggering 2,303 views.

Geekdom101 has retweeted and said at a later point he'll be able to help more, that's awesome news coming from someone with as large a following and as much influence as him.

Also remember GoAnime are the streaming arm of Periscoop Film, who are a home video distributor, meaning if they license Ocean Kai there's a possibility of a Blu-Ray release too :D , they did put out Super Broly after all.

Thanks to all who have tweeted me and responded to my posts. I'll keep sharing what you all write hashtagging Periscoop Film, as I believe if enough of us like, tweet and retweet we can make enough noise to get this released. If you haven't already follow the Ocean Dub Fans account here.

About a month until Kai is streaming in the Netherlands. Remember it's going to be the new Dutch dub and Japanese audio first by GoAnime will look into English options, so everyone reach out to them any way you can and suggest they acquire Ocean's dub.

Email for Periscoop/ĢoAnime is info@goanime.nl and Videoland can be reached here.

I just want to bring up a recent development that may seem irrelevant at face value, but I feel brings the current situation of this particular topic in perspective better than anything else.

https://imissbionix.wordpress.com/2024/ ... -premiere/

This is a general news article regarding Dragon Ball Daima being in theaters across Canada for a limited time, but it also made note of this:

In Canada, it is available to stream on Crunchyroll and Netflix.

So, here we have a brand new Dragon Ball property that Toei has had no problem giving a home in the great white north right away. No immediate complications like Canada had with Dragon Ball Kai or even Dragon Ball Super.

Another factor of importance is that it already has an English-language dub. And that is also readily available to the Canadian consumer in a manner more efficient and more convenient and immediate than marked up physical media that takes months to be released.

So, in a scenario such as that that we're presented with right now, can anyone still believe that Toei (or any content provider, for that matter) will still look at Dragon Ball Kai, an anime that was released in 2009, and say, "Canadians could really use Kai on cable!"

Even assuming that Dragon Ball Kai would become in-vogue or that the issue that it has not been on any Canadian viewing platform whatsoever matters to them all of a sudden; That is to say that aside from the DVDs and Blu-rays being in Canadian stores, there was no official distribution of the show really done there. If Toei did get this sudden motivation to spread the gospel of Kai, wouldn't they work to place the property on the exact same platform(s), in the exact same way - meaning that the FUNimation dub would earnestly take precedent over any sort of fringe element that may exist (or not, in the case of Daima)? That makes perfect sense to me.

TL;DR, Ocean's Kai dub has less likelihood to be seen now than it ever did before. The apparent purpose for which it was created had a statute of limitations and we have long exceeded it. Is it unfair? Absolutely, I'm right with you there, but anyone holding their breath for Ocean's dub of Kai now will only drown or choke.

I don't blame anyone for not being optimistic about Ocean Kai being released. There's been so many missed opportunities at this stage, but it would just be a shame for all of that work to never be seen.

That said, TOEI is still shopping Kai around even if its not the priority anymore. India and Poland got Kai for the first time last year and it debuted in the Netherlands just recently.

It's good to see episodes of the series getting theatrical screenings. In fact it happened for Kai earlier this year when the new Castilian dub premiered in Spanish theatres, so maybe if we could convince a Canadian theatre chain like Imagine Cinemas or Landmark Cinemas to do something similar by working out a deal with Ocean to screen the first 3-4 episodes of their Kai dub as sort of like a preview we would have a better shot at a broadcaster or streaming platform taking an interest?

This really doesn't make any difference at all. Kai aired and re-aired in other places after they got newer properties already. The last movie also played in theatres here, so we're in no different position than we were a year ago.

That is a good point, but for one thing, movies are a separate domain in this context. It's not like having the FUNimation dubs of the new Broly movie or other Dragon Ball movies in Canadian movie theaters would in any way jeopardize having Ocean dubbing those same movies. That was never on the table in the first place.

Furthermore, I think you're honing in too much on the concept of movies being in Canadian theaters or Kai itself resurfacing in any situation. Of course that couldn't possibly be problematic.

The problem I'm communicating is, Ocean's Kai dub is contingent upon having a TV deal, with both the intellectual property owner as well as the potential Canada-based network being interested in not only the property, but that edition of it. We've already seen Lisa Yamatoya with her hand in the cookie jar, trying to push FUNimation's Kai dub on Wow! Unlimited's Marni Shulman. Now, of course, she didn't play ball, but her bosses having too much greed and apathy to do anything and squandering all of the potential of that opportunity makes that totally immaterial.

So, we're looking at a very uphill battle already. And you and anyone else are free to disagree, of course. But I feel as though the Dragon Ball Kai property itself, let alone Ocean's unseen dub of it, will lose steam the older it gets and the influx of newer Dragon Ball content topples over the years, as it has already, it does prove to be a challenge to get the general public to care. Double time in the case of stuck-up, out of touch Toei executives.

As I pointed out in my previous post, unlike with Kai and Super, Toei took care of Daima's Canadian distribution right quick. No room to even ponder or speculate. So, even if Ocean's Kai dub could qualify as a new property, it would probably lead Toei to sell it to the same platforms, Netflix and very interestingly, Crunchyroll, the company that acts as a carrier of the FUNimation legacy in certain aspects, at least. That being the case, you could at the bare minimum 99% count on FUNimation's dub being applied to it, thus forming a very apparent paradox: We want Dragon Ball Kai to be distributed in Canada to see Ocean's dub, but the people who are far more likely than all other entities to do it will not use Ocean's dub.

It should be noted that it also doesn't help that Dragon Ball Kai, as a piece of media itself is a disjointedly produced rehash of Dragon Ball Z that was never too popular in its native Japan and even in certain western circles, for whatever the reason or rationale might be, the home releases, streams or whatever else of Dragon Ball Z seem to consistently sell and resonate with old and new fans. So, when you're trying to pitch Dragon Ball Kai to new broadcasters, those who are typically not Dragon Ball fans, what is the incentive for them to take in a 15-year old Dragon Ball property that gives off a neither fish nor foul delivery, especially at face value?

The incentive for us, obviously, is to see Ocean's dub. I feel like some of us around here seem to propagate this belief that Dragon Ball Kai airing in Canada will somehow reshape the anime industry or that a new generation would just never know about the awesomeness of Dragon Ball without YTV or whoever else airing it. Nobody really cares about that and we know that's not true. It's all about this happening would be the only gateway for us seeing an English-language interpretation of Dragon Ball Kai that we may very well like a lot better.

There's nothing wrong with that, don't get me wrong. FUNimation had been all about not leaving well enough alone and hindering everything people like about Dragon Ball from their birth until their death. But I just feel like all of us should employ a little more self-awareness regarding this situation. Both in terms of the likelihood of us seeing this thing before we reach our 50s or somewhere therein and the reality of why we put so much stock in it in the first place.

I think it's very telling that the only broadcasting companies that showed an interest in Ocean's dub of Kai were those not owned by Corus who had far too much of a monopoly on the Canadian TV landscape.

As I say now that there's a precedent for Kai being shown in theatres, as late as 2024 it wouldn't hurt to contact some Canadian cinema chains to see if they'd be interested in screening episodes of this Kai dub, maybe even marketing "the return of the Canadian cast" to generate some real interest in the whole dub being seen.

We could also perhaps reach out to Wildbrain (formerly DHX Media) owned channels who like WOW and Toon-A-Vision may be more receptive to branching out from just the usual family friendly entertainment that has dominated Canadian TV for years now.

I can accept the fact we may never see Ocean Kai and I'll say at this point it seems likely that will be the case, but I hope I'm wrong. As has been said before there is always the chance so long as Ocean haven't destroyed the masters. It would also be a shame for all the work that was put into this dub to go to waste.

So in a surprising turn of events we have more anime coming to Canadian TV as Sailor Moon crystal is set to debut on the Family channel this Monday.

As I've said non-Corus broadcasters like the proposed WOW Unlimited channel and Toon-A-Vision have a better track record of showing interest in Kai than Corus-owned channels, and Sailor Moon is a TOEI show.

Their email address is info@family.ca
