Who is actually in the lead now regarding new DB projects?

Post by Jord » Thu Nov 07, 2024 9:23 am

I would think TOEI could potentially still make new DB shows, either based on the rest of the Super Manga or new ideas or would they have to alter their license to do "new" things? Is there a single person, or company that decides what new DB content will be like, now that Toriyama is gone?
Even if he was still alive, I didn't think he himself had the license to DB, but doing projects without his blessing would look bad, PR-wise.

One would think it would be Toriyama's wife, Katou Yoshimi. She's a mangaka herself, so who knows if she would want to be involved in writing stories or whatever. She might just leave it up to Iyoku or one of her kids.

Shrug. Who knows. Call back later.

TOEI and Shueisha have the freedom to do whatever new stories they want with the anime and manga respectively. There is no one person they need approval from, even when Toriyama was alive that was not the case, and decisions regarding the direction for franchise were made as a matter of respect. Toriyama couldn't stop any new productions, but because he was the original author the powers that be looked for his blessing.

The plan for 2009 originally was a new Dragon Ball series, which Toriyama didn't want at the time, so Kai became sort of like a concession, but Battle of Gods was going to be made with or without him. The movie we got happened because Toriyama was shown the script and he reworked everything.

Of course with the rest of the revival era movies and series the rest is history. In almost all cases Toriyama has been kept in the picture whether its been giving some rough outlines (for most of the Super arcs) or done everything himself (as is apparently the case with Daima).

Akio Iyoku is the man who keeps up with international trends, he told Toriyama characters like Broly and Cell Games Gohan were popular, which led to recent movies taking the direction they took. In terms of who will be consulted for future stories I could see it being a combination of him, Toyotaro, Toriyama's wife, kids and maybe a few other close friends and family.

Toriyama didn't own the license to the anime but himself and Bird Studio were at the top of the chain of command when it comes to the rights to the franchise overall. Below them it was Shueshia, then TOEI, followed by the various international license holders like Funimation, Ocean, AB Groupe, Cloverway, etc.
