Dragon Ball Daima - English Dub: Stephanie Nadolny Returns

Just came back from watching it in the theater. The dub was pretty good. In the brief moments we heard adult Gokū, Sean Schemmel turns in what is probably his best work as the character yet. Chris Sabat seemed slightly off as Vegeta, but that could have been due to the sound system tbh, so I'll reserve judgment until I can listen to it closer.

As for the kids, Stephanie Nadonly does an awesome job as Gokū and sounds way better than she did back in the OG Dragon Ball. I love all the other kid voices too. Paul Castro Jr actually sounds a bit reminiscent of Brian Drummond at times.

The only puzzling casting choice was bringing in Justin Cook to voice what is clearly a child Dende (which is already weird in itself). As for the script, it's nearly 1:1 from what I can tell. One thing I did notice was how much oversight Toei had on the dub. Seemed a bit more than usual.

Just got out the theater. The dub is pretty good...but I'm sorry, Nadolny is still the weak link. Don't get me wrong, her acting has improved quite a bit (and the better scripts certainly help), but now she has another problem: to my ears, it sounds like she's having trouble keeping up with her Goku voice in some lines. Nozawa is admittedly having that issue too in places, but it feels MUCH more pronounced with Nadolny. Her efforts/attack grunts sound particularly strained to me. I genuinely hate to be a hater, especially since I've been loving the modern era of DB dubs, but I still can't help but feel that bringing back Nadolny was the wrong move. At least Luffy has been keeping Clinkenbeard in practice for this kind of show. I know I'm in the minority though; I know a lot of people are really happy with her here, and more power to them. The rest of the dub is spot-on, so a strained performance from Nadolny doesn't sink the product as a whole for me.

Side note: I liked hearing at least some Kai clips for the Boo recap. Dunno if that's the case for the whole thing (would have to do a side-by-side comparison to determine that), but I at least caught onto Vegeta's Final Explosion and Boo right after using the same screams. It may feel cheap to some, but that's a level of consistency that I kinda love.

That's odd. They still have Maxie Whitehead playing kid Dende in the games doing her young Aaron Dismuke impression, so why not get her back for this one?

As for the script, I assume it's probably more just a choice by the team that did the dub. Sabat wasn't the ADR director, so his personal touches were probably just not there.

Them using the Kai voice recordings is great. They don't have any real need to rerecord them if they can get away with it & the Z clips would be very out of place.
