The biggest fear I have about a Budokai revival is that it'll end up feeling incomplete like Sparking Zero.

Xenoverse 0. Technically Xenoverse 3, but pretty much everything in the series is either outdated or was hastily made and needs to be remade from scratch. I could see it being another Sparking Zero, where it's definitely a continuation/successor but also a good starting point for new fans.

I really really hope they overhaul the game's visuals and its story. I think I'd even take a smaller roster for good looking characters and attacks and what-if stories that should have been in the first game

I think the biggest issue holding these games back is the developer's belief that they must include everything in the game. Sparking Zero would've been a far more polished game with more game modes had they just focused exclusively on the Z era for the base game. Once you have a solid foundation, then you can start looking into bringing other parts of the franchise onboard.

I would say they should do Xenoverse 3, but after nearly a decade of updates for X2, I don’t even know if there’d be much of an appetite for a third game at this point.

I think sparking zero would have been a skip for me if it was just a Z game. That’s the reason why I didn’t buy it when it came out and why I’m waiting until it goes on sale on steam to get it.

I want a standalone Super game. It’s been out for 10 years now and Sparking Zero is the first game to actually put its content in the base game, and they still skipped arcs and characters that had no reason not to be in the game.

It's a sorry state of affairs if FighterZ 2 really never happens. The half assed 9th gen upgrade FighterZ got last year wasn't a good sign. It has rollback netcode on PS5, but most of the playerbase remains on PS4 because of how buggy the upgrade was.

That aside I'm always up for a Budokai reboot. I was very happy with Sparking Zero, but I've always preferred Budokai to Tenkaichi overall.

At this point nothing can be ruled out, as most people had given up hope on a sequel to BT3. If that game got a sequel all these years later then anything can happen.

The problem with doing a Budokai sequel is that I simply don’t know what appeal it could have that either FighterZ or Sparking Zero don’t already provide. For the people who want a traditional fighter with Dragon Ball characters, that’s what FighterZ is for. For the people who want a big sandbox game that emulates the feel of the anime, Sparking Zero fits that bill far better than the Budokai format would ever allow.

To be honest, I have no clue what the next logical step is for Dragon Ball video games. Maybe they should continue branching out into other genres besides fighting games?

The gaming experience between FighterZ and Budokai are completely different. FighterZ is a 2D Team fighting game with DB characters. Budokai is a 2.5D/3D DB game that isn’t solely focused on the fighting, it being a DB game is its main priority. Have you played any of the Budokai games all the way through?

Yes, I have. My point isn’t that the Budokai games play just like FighterZ. My point is that I don’t see what the Budokai system has to offer that you can’t get elsewhere. If you want a Dragon Ball game that emulates the feel of the anime, the Tenkaichi/Sparking format fits the bill much better than the Budokai format. What exactly would be the appeal of a new Budokai game, beyond branding? Even the classic soundtracks of those games can’t exactly be reused or updated, given that they were composed by Kenji Yamamoto.

Again, FighterZ and Budokai are completely different. If you want to see what the Budokai games can offer take a look at some high level Shin Budokai or Burst Limit gameplay.

My point is that with the Budokai series we get deep mechanics & gameplay AND an awesome story and other things which FighterZ does NOT.

Can the Budokai mechanics really be classified as “deep”, though? As far as Dragon Ball games go, they were certainly revolutionary for their time, but they were never exactly known for being particularly competitive. That’s the problem I’ve been getting at. They have neither the competitive gameplay that appeals to people outside the Dragon Ball fandom that FighterZ has, nor do they work as over the top Dragon Ball simulators the way the Sparking games do.

Does BN owning the domain to Budokai4.com, Budokai5.com and Budokai6.com mean anything? I know the Xenoverse community were going crazy because BN owns the domain to “Xenoverse3.com”.

Companies do this all the time, it rarely results in anything. It's mostly done to avoid legal issues if they ever decided to use those titles in the future.

That makes sense, the Xenoverse community used this as a confirmation that Xenoverse 3 was on the way lol. I guess only time will tell at this point.

I don't really think that FighterZ fills the Budokai niche despite how popular it was. It's got almost no transformations, a limited selection of characters and stages, a completely different gameplay style, and it's very competitive oriented which many fans realized is not something they can partake in without feeling overwhelmed. Another point is that FZ is now old and missing a lot of characters, and FighterZ2 is seemingly not being worked on, so there is an opportunity for a different company to take the 2D DB Fighter mantle.

Budokai 4 would have a chance to live and sell well especially since we admittedly live in a quite the era for nostalgia.

Can't we just get a 2D game that's not pandering to the competitive market? Will every new DB game need to be the samey 3rd person view? Would be disappointing if so.

Exactly! Right now would be the perfect window for a new/modern Budokai with the hype behind SZ fueling it. The last Budokai game we got for consoles was in 2008 if you don’t count the HD “collection”, it’s time.

Sparking Zero is a game that could be around for a long time. Could basically take Xenoverse 2's slot as the non-competitive fighting game they pump new characters in for 10 years straight, and I would be very happy with that. I hope they add new modes and stages too.

Probably nothing on the RPG front as Kakarot is still in development apparently.

As for a competitive fighting game, Fighterz 2 would be amazing but that depends on Arcsys's schedule.

A Budokai reboot could be fun. I played those games a ton back in the day.
