Hey eveyone, this has been my latest project.
Sadly, a proper kikuchi rescore has not been completed. Two attempts have gone through, so here's hoping the third time is the charm!
I hereby present my current project: a complete rescore for Dragon Ball Z Kai with music by Shunsuke Kikuchi. My intention with this project is to follow the original score from DBZ by Kikuchi mostly while also accounting for Kai's editing differences. With all due respect to IHaveNoUsername, I fully intend to score this all the way through, given that his project never finished not to mention you can't get access to his files easily anymore.
Like my previous projects, this is going to be scored saga by saga, and my current rate is to score at least one episode per day (weekends give me time to do more). With this project, I hope to provide those searching for a decent score of Kikuchi a pleasing product that sadly was not available in Kai's very jagged attempt at using Kikuchi's tracks.
One issue I've encountered is that there are a lot of kikuchi bgms that are unreleased, and even though they are available outside of the official purchases, a couple aren't usable in this project, so I have to cut out the parts that have overlapping SFX/dialogue to make it work, but so far this has been only applicable to one track so here's hoping it doesn't pan out this way.
Also like my previous projects, these will be presented in audio format only, meaning you will need to have the original episodes of Kai on hand. If you have trouble ripping your kai videos into MKV format, it is easily doable via MKV-merge.
File format is going to be AC3 @ 448 KB/s in stereo
Enjoy!

DAAAAAAAAAAMN we've needed this thing for so long.
I was starting attempt number 3 myself but it was going slow getting off the ground and with all your experience I know this is going to be amazing.
Going to check out some episodes ASAP.
Are these in stereo like your other rescore?

Was hoping it would be FLAC instead of AAC. But beggars can't be choosers.

FLAC takes up a lot of space and my drive has several other projects on it that takes up the space.Woodlandbuckle wrote: Mon Mar 03, 2025 1:59 pm Was hoping it would be FLAC instead of AAC. But beggars can't be choosers.

Never understood why go through a lot of work to give a lossy output.
I guess I've always saved lossless proxies for all the [redacted]'s work files I fix up.
At least for all the projects our releases have.
To me it seems redundant, that's all, but thank you for taking the time to offer this.

Re: [WIP] DBZ Kai Kikuchi Rescore
I made my own kikuchi rescore of the buu saga a while ago.
I haven't posted it yet because It's tied to a seperate project that's not finished yet.
I could send the audio files to you and if you like them use those in your project, instead of doing all the work yourself.

Had some time this week, got the Namek Saga done, plus I re-upped episode 1 with an additional track in where Bardock flies up to face Frieza.

Re: [WIP] DBZ Kai Kikuchi Rescore
Frieza Saga has been uploaded.
I'm going back a bit on the 1:1 rescore of the original soundtrack because there was a lot of tracks that repeated throughout episodes with how kai is edited, plus some scenes were cut differently. Most of the iconic scenes are the same (except for Vegeta's vision to Goku, IMO their scoring there didn't make sense). My goal is still to be true to the original score, just so that tracks aren't consistently repeating throughout episodes.

I think there's always room for improvement over the original.Diccolo-420 wrote: Sat Mar 15, 2025 12:47 pm Frieza Saga has been uploaded.

I remember seeing Goku turn SSJ in Japanese for the first time and thinking, even though the track that plays is a really good one that fits, the scene felt underwhelming because I've heard that song SO many times before already, seriously it plays 31 times before then. In Kai, I think these issues would be even worse with that kind of track that mostly plays in canon scenes, because the frequency would be even higher.
Go with your gut. Some tracks are overused, some great tracks are underused or unused.

Cell Saga came along surprisingly quick, go ahead and grab it
I managed to use some of kai's placements here and there that were IMO superior to the original score, plus editing differences.

I'm looking forward to seeing which Kai placements you decided to stick with, because I did think some of those were better in isolation.

One such I'll point out was when Cell absorbs 17 and his first transformation. Though the transformation in kai uses the same piece it's just placed a bit later in it, giving ominous silence as he begins to transform.Fizzer wrote: Mon Mar 24, 2025 7:14 amYou're working at incredible pace! Managed to finally score this iconic scene. It's a shame Kai's editing doesn't allow a fuller use of the track, but that's the sacrifice the editing makes.

When you hit up Kai TFC, will you be using the corrected audio mix for the dub?
