Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
An obscure question: In the Toriyama one-shot "Sachie-chan Good!!", upon meeting him on the alien craft, Sachie says (in the Viz English translation)that Zarid is a junior martial arts world champion. The DB Wiki (yeah yeah, I know) claims that this is actually a direct reference to the Tenkaichi Budokai's junior division. I can't for the life of me find Japanese scans of this one-shot, but I'm gonna take a chance that someone here has it: Does the original language point in any way to the tournament we're familiar with, as opposed to a generic high-level combat sport event?
To a strong man, the end justifies the means. To a stronger man, the means justify the end.

I'm actually having a tough time finding the 2014 Katsura Akira book for sale! Was gonna drop a link for it here, but huh.johnboy1 wrote: Sat Mar 08, 2025 1:42 am An obscure question: In the Toriyama one-shot "Sachie-chan Good!!", upon meeting him on the alien craft, Sachie says (in the Viz English translation)that Zarid is a junior martial arts world champion. Anyway...!
In Japanese, Sachie refers to Zalid as the "Martial Arts World Cup Junior Class Champion" (格闘ワールドカップ ジュニアクラスチャンピオン Kakutō Wārudo Kappu Junia Kurasu Chanpion); you might even want to go with a different translation for "martial arts" since it's not based on budō here, but I see "martial arts" as a regular enough translation of kakutō... I dunno, maybe they're actually wrestlers, but it's not really that important. Regardless, earlier in the work, the aliens ask for the (non-junior class) "Martial Arts World Cup Champion" named Nijudayu Momochi (Sachie's dad).
Tying it to the Tenka'ichi Budokai specifically is a stretch, especially with Jaco the Galactic Patrolman effectively serving as a soft-reboot for the entire Galactic Patrol series, and therefore making Sachie-chan and Jiya even more explicitly out of continuity with Dragon Ball.

Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
Anyone wants to revise and better the "Yo, Son Goku and his friends return" special?
Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
This is largely irrelevant to your request, but just for the record: The sub file that you shared with me does NOT contain the official subs. I compared the file to the official stream from 2008 (which included English subs), and they are clearly different translations.sangofe wrote: Mon Mar 10, 2025 1:51 pm Anyone wants to revise and better the "Yo, Son Goku and his friends return" special?

What's the use for this post? Why not pm instead? You should have sent me a pm. I did notice after I sent you the subs that they had been slightly edited vs another sub file I found but do you actually have scripts of the original sub to compare side by side?johnboy1 wrote: Mon Mar 10, 2025 3:03 pmThis is largely irrelevant to your request, but just for the record: The sub file that you shared with me does NOT contain the official subs. They absolutly did not fix translation errors.
Re: The All-Purpose "Translation Request" Thread
A pretty simple way to think about it would be to think of budō as "martial arts" and kakutō as "combat sport". The terms "martial arts tournament" and "combat sports tournament" make you picture pretty different things in your mind even if there's a certain overlap in meaning.VegettoEX wrote: Mon Mar 10, 2025 12:59 pmyou might even want to go with a different translation for "martial arts" since it's not based on budō here, but I see "martial arts" as a regular enough translation of kakutō... The right translation for 格闘 kakutō is: hand-to-hand fighting; grappling; scufflingVegettoEX wrote: Mon Mar 10, 2025 12:59 pm In Japanese, Sachie refers to Zalid as the "Martial Arts World Cup Junior Class Champion" (格闘ワールドカップ ジュニアクラスチャンピオン Kakutō Wārudo Kappu Junia Kurasu Chanpion); you might even want to go with a different translation for "martial arts" since it's not based on budō here, but I see "martial arts" as a regular enough translation of kakutō... Sure -- that's the literal "definition" of the word, but you'd rarely say "Hand-to-Hand Fighting World Cup" in English (most mentions of that phrase as-is seem to be largely literal translations from Russian material), nevermind something like "Scuffling World Cup".Geridos wrote: Wed Mar 12, 2025 5:47 pmThe right translation for 格闘 kakutō is: hand-to-hand fighting; grappling; scufflingVegettoEX wrote: Mon Mar 10, 2025 12:59 pm In Japanese, Sachie refers to Zalid as the "Martial Arts World Cup Junior Class Champion" (格闘ワールドカップ ジュニアクラスチャンピオン Kakutō Wārudo Kappu Junia Kurasu Chanpion); you might even want to go with a different translation for "martial arts" since it's not based on budō here, but I see "martial arts" as a regular enough translation of kakutō... Which, to Adamant's point, is why you'd be better off adapting it more like "Combat Sports Tournament" as something readable and logical.

Grappling World Cup sounds kinda catchy to me.VegettoEX wrote: Wed Mar 12, 2025 5:57 pmSure -- that's the literal "definition" of the word, but you'd rarely say "Hand-to-Hand Fighting World Cup" in English (most mentions of that phrase as-is seem to be largely literal translations from Russian material), nevermind something like "Scuffling World Cup".Geridos wrote: Wed Mar 12, 2025 5:47 pmThe right translation for 格闘 kakutō is: hand-to-hand fighting; grappling; scufflingVegettoEX wrote: Mon Mar 10, 2025 12:59 pm In Japanese, Sachie refers to Zalid as the "Martial Arts World Cup Junior Class Champion" (格闘ワールドカップ ジュニアクラスチャンピオン Kakutō Wārudo Kappu Junia Kurasu Chanpion); you might even want to go with a different translation for "martial arts" since it's not based on budō here, but I see "martial arts" as a regular enough translation of kakutō... This statement about Gotenks is from the Jump Anime Library 1: Dragon Ball Z Movie 12 mook:
Or is that a translation mistake?
This statement about Gotenks is from the Jump Anime Library 1: Dragon Ball Z Movie 12 mook:
Seems to be a mistake in the second part because it says you can see SSjin 3 Gotenks in Movie 12 despite the fact that this very phrase above says that SSjjin 3 Gotenksvwas released on Mach 15th despite Movie 12 being released on March 4th.
Gotenks has already appeared on TV since the January broadcast, but he actually powered up into Super Gotenks 3 in episode 260, "Escape from Another Dimension!! Super Gotenks 3," which aired on March 15th. And this time, "Rebirth of Fusion!! Goku and Vegeta" was released on March 4th!! In other words, you can watch Gotenks 3 for about 10 days before it is released on TV, which is a pleasure you can't experience if you don't rush to the cinema as soon as possible! Did you get to see Super Gotenks 3 before it was on TV? Well, of course.
Or is that a translation mistake?

The image seems to be about the difference between normal Gohan and his "Ultimate" form. Can someone explain to me in detail what this image contains?

Gohan's potential was brought out by the Elder Kaioshin in the second half of the Buu saga, so he is the strongest in his normal state.
In the original (movie) version, his bangs were hanging down to match his hairstyle, but this time, he has no bangs to match his new hairstyle. Please remove the glasses when in battle mode.
Previous Gohan: Before, his eyes were closed with color.
After his ability is withdrawn, it is (eyes) closed with solid lines.
Gohan with glasses: In non-combat mode. A thin neck, narrow shoulders and a gentle expression.
Gohan without glasses: In combat mode. Thick neck, broad shoulders, muscular body, stern expression.
Gohan in combat mode (Ultimate): Gohan's aura is white because he is not a Super Saiyan.

Why they decided to remove the bang will forever be a mystery to me. They really do hate my boy GohanGeridos wrote: Sun Mar 23, 2025 4:42 am In the original (movie) version, his bangs were hanging down to match his hairstyle, but this time, he has no bangs to match his new hairstyle.
