Dragon Ball live action (CRAZY IDEA)
Re: Dragon Ball live action (CRAZY IDEA)
adapted my idea a bit
season 1 (pilaf-23rd tournament saga, 12 eps)
season 2 (complete adaption of red ribbon sagas, 12 eps)
season 3 (baba and tien arcs, 10 eps)
season 4 (king piccolo and piccolo jr sagas and goku/chichi wedding ep, 12 eps)
thoughts??
then season 5/1 for Z (saiyan and frieza sagas, 12 eps)
season 6 (complete adaptions of cell sagas, 12 eps)
season 7 (part one of buu sagas-kid buu maybe?, 12 eps)
season 8 (part two of kid buu-end of Z, 10 eps)
oh, and if getting the japanese openings and endings are difficult, then I'd use the 1995 Dragon Ball english intro for OG, and Rock the Dragon for Z-buu, and then will try and get 'fight it out' for buu sagas. perhaps a use of japanese ost for OG, and then a mix of ocean/faulconer/japanese ost for Z?
as for actors, a mix between japanese actors/actresses that can speak english and american actors/actresses. perhaps for OG, kid goku could be american/maybe british as i don't know if people that young learn english in japan? may be wrong

I think people are drowning in glasses of water with Dragon Ball Ideas for Live Action. The Pilaf Arc is super short and it should be easy to make interesting, the material simply needs to be elevated and not made boring.

Re: Dragon Ball live action (CRAZY IDEA)
A couple people lumping the Saiyan and Freeza arcs together as one season. I know this is hypothetical, but it does feel like people are suggesting they are in fact one single arc. Maybe tee up Freeza as a cliffhanger, but the Freeza arc is its own thing.

Even if you wanted to count them as a one arc there’s way too much going on for one season even with the understanding you’ll be streamlining the storyABED wrote: Sun Jan 18, 2026 9:37 pm A couple people lumping the Saiyan and Freeza arcs together as one season. Like I know “getting rid of the Ginyu Squadron “ is popular in these hypotheticals but fuck that

Pilaf is just not the type of thing yo build a whole movie around. I think the best route to go for a first movie is a beefed up version of Path to Power that makes room for Krillin, Ox-King and Chi-ChiYellow Flower King wrote: Sun Jan 18, 2026 7:09 pm I think people are drowning in glasses of water with Dragon Ball Ideas for Live Action. I think I brought the idea before, but I'd have the Red RIbbon Army helmed by a trio that is a composite of the Pilaf trio and Red Ribbon Army - Commander Red as Pilaf, Black as Shu and Colonel Yellow, a female officer with bad allergies (hint hint) as Mai
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Yes, if you want to go the movie route I’d always been in favor of Path to Power as the blue print with the inclusion of those aforementioned characters.jjgp1112 wrote: Sun Jan 18, 2026 10:49 pmPilaf is just not the type of thing yo build a whole movie around. You could essentially use Krillin as a replacement for turtle where he’s already a student of Roshi’s when Goku and Bulma meet the Turtle Hermit and he’s annoyed at his sensei’s behavior and jealous of Goku’s natural talent. Ox King can take the place of Hachan as the big friendly guy who gets killed by a Staff Officer Black gone mad and the wish by Goku to bring him back is what gets Chi Chi to fall for him instead of “and then kicked me in my vagina and I realized I belonged to him now and have to marry him and bear the sons of Son Goku”

Re: Dragon Ball live action (CRAZY IDEA)
I would leave out Krillin for sequel/second movie.
Or at the very least, leave it for post credit for first movie; at the horizon of sea, a bald person (his face is not revealed; only shown from behind) is slowly sailing toward Roshi island. End. A perfect setup for sequel.

Re: Dragon Ball live action (CRAZY IDEA)
This is how I would do it:
Season 1: Pilaf and 21st Tenkaichi arcs
Season 2: Red Ribbon Army arc
Season 3: 22nd Tenkaichi and King Piccolo arcs
Season 4: 23rd Tenkaichi and Saiyan arcs
Season 5: Namek arc
Season 6: Cell arc
Season 7: Buu arc
Each season will be 10 episodes each, and any season with two arcs will be divided into 5 episodes for each arc.

Season 2: Red Ribbon Army arc

Re: Dragon Ball live action (CRAZY IDEA)
I want to put more effort into this when I'm not falling asleep after getting home from a screening of No Other Choice, but:
Season 1: 8 episodes, 69 minutes each (the length of three anime episodes). Combine the first hunt for the Dragon Balls with the Red Ribbon Army arc. Recast Yamcha, Pu-erh and Oolong as reluctant resistance fighters protecting a small village from Colonel Silver. The POV character is Blooma, who grows from a selfish kid who gets away with shit because of her genius into a responsible girl who understands the fragility of life. Gokuu's arc is seen through Blooma's eyes as he grows to learn how vast the world is and how small he is in it. Gokuu also begins a two season arc to revive the Gyuumaou after he is killed by the Red Ribbon Army. The season ends with Supreme Commander Red unleashing Piccolo Daimaou from his rice cooker imprisonment as a last ditch effort to kill Gokuu, Blooma, Chi-Chi, Yamcha, Pu-erh and Oolong.
I don't know if there's really a place to do THREE Tenka-ichi Budoukai, so I decided to save one for a later season. Perhaps the Muten Roushi reveals that the war between the Red Ribbon Army, the Mifan Empire and the World Government has made holding a tournament impossible because nobody can easily travel and martial artists are fighting in the war or something.
I need to think about it more, but I would probably save introducing Kuririn, Tenshinhan and Chaozu for the second season, which ends with Piccolo Daimaou being defeated and reincarnating.

Re: Dragon Ball live action (CRAZY IDEA)
hmmmm i'm liking these alternative takes...
so season 1 now is (using julieYBM's idea): Season 1: 8 episodes, 69 minutes each (the length of three anime episodes). The season ends with Supreme Commander Red unleashing Piccolo Daimaou from his rice cooker imprisonment as a last ditch effort to kill Gokuu, Blooma, Chi-Chi, Yamcha, Pu-erh and Oolong. Ending is a bald person (his face is not revealed; only shown from behind i.e. Krillin) is slowly sailing toward Roshi island.
season 2- and basically season 2 will have two sub plots (gokuu and co beating piccolo daimaou, and Krillin/Tien/Chiaozu training with Roshi, having mini skirmishes against Pilaf/Shu/Mai while also collecting dragon balls?)
season 3- a rivalry season!! so gokuu and co want the dragon balls to revive gyuumaou, krillin and co want the dragon balls for their own reason, they get manipulated by piccolo jr to give him eternal youth. basically a rehash of the piccolo jr budokai, however with elements of baba arc as baba's fighters join the budokai, as well as crane and tao pai pai, and Bora. eventually, all of baba's fighters are defeated, tien beats the crane school and lets them live. Grandpa Gohan shows up at the tournament (Baba gives him a day pass) and does what roshi does against piccolo jr, but fails and dies as a result- results in goku getting serious power up (Not ssj yet though) and beats piccolo jr and lets him live. Tournament ends. Pilaf/Shu/Mai kill Upa offscreen like with Krillin's death before the king piccolo saga in manga, which leads onto season 4.
Season 4- Gokuu rushes after Pilaf, loses, and then goes to Karin etc, however rather than going back to fight pilaf after, he gets invited to Kami and Mr Popo's place. Piccolo Jr is there too. they get training, and increase their power. Krillin/Tien/Chiaozu are also trained, but by Roshi and Crane, with their final challenge being facing tao pai pai. anyway, once all their training is done, gokuuu and other go and face pilaf (piccolo jr, however decides to go his own way and doesn't help with pilaf, setting up Z). Gokuu turns into great ape against Pilaf, destroys them and they run off like the cowards we know... Yajirobe appears, cuts off tail, he also has collected all of the dragon balls. they wish for Upa to come back. Gyuumaou and Grandpa Gohan look on as Gokuuu and chi-chi have their wedding as our alternate telling of OG dragon ball ends.

Re: Dragon Ball live action (CRAZY IDEA)
Here's how I would lump things together:
Pilaf/21st TB
Red Ribbon Army
Fortuneteller Baba/22nd TB
PIccolo/23rd TB
Saiyan
Freeza
Cell
Buu
It's streaming so there's flexibility with how episodes drop so seasons where it covers multiple arcs would likely have a break between drops (e.g. Piccolo and the tournament).
Anyone got any ideas for end of season or mid season cliffhangers?
I'm having a lot of fun with this hypothetical.

Re: Dragon Ball live action (CRAZY IDEA)
i've started to try and write scripts, but alas I can't seem to get pass 25 mins worth of content. perhaps my idea is best suited for anime form, and maybe the live action can be a direct adaptation of manga, but the anime is alternate retelling?
yes, i agree, it's really fun.

Re: Dragon Ball live action (CRAZY IDEA)
It's interesting, but with current's worldwide economy, I don't think there will be budget for any live action, either movie or series project.
I don't want to see a low budget product. We had enough with DB Evolution. Please don't make any live action, Stick to AI, stick to blender and renders bringing the manga to life, it is better.
