General Yamamoto Rip off thread

Post by Big Boss » Mon Feb 22, 2010 12:39 pm

I was searching around YouTube for a few Budokai songs, and you know that incredibly funky level up song in Budokai 3? I knew it sounded familiar, and I was right. It's a cover for Chic's "Everybody Dance".

Level Up song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-y6CuqV9 ... re=related

Everbody Dance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOx81aG-EN4

Notice the base line, and sing the lyrics to yourself while listening to the level up song. It took me a while to get, but it's uncanny.

Yamamoto seems to have a tendency of making covers of other songs and turning them into something even more awesome than before. :D

Yet ANOTHER music homage

Post by RoarkVegeta » Mon Feb 22, 2010 6:40 pm

So, I just found YET ANOTHER music homage song from DBZ.
Mai - My - Every Day

Everybody Dance Now

Just listen to the opening beat. It's obvious.

I heard Boogie Wonderland in the karaoke of Ikusa. I had to replay it a few times to make sure I was hearing right.

It's probably just a coincidence.

Even if it is, it's a pretty cool coincidence.

You mean best arranger of all time!

I also love his compositions too. Hmm... I'll probably have more to say on the subject later.

Kenji Yamamoto's arrangements are filled with stuff like this. I'm sure there's tons more that we just don't know about yet. I mean, he arranged nearly every DBZ song there is, so this is probably but I tiny fraction.

That was my first thought, but you REALLY have to listen. The jazz guitar in the level up song, is basically the same rhythm as the lyrics in Everybody Dance. And the "OoohhOOOOHHHHohhhhh" in the song is at the same time as the synth horns in the level up song, then it goes back to the main lyrics and the jazz guitar.

Post any songs you know of which our good'ol Yamamoto has "arranged". It's a nice way to keep these kind of threads contained. :)
I'll start

Now there's only one. Three threads about the same subject in the span of two days is kind of silly.

Did someone recently upload a bunch of comparison videos about this on Youtube or something? Or is it a complete coincidence that a lot of people are suddenly noticing this stuff?

These are somewhat similar, but don't seem that much more than other music of their type.

This is almost as lame as the plagarism "case" against Yoko Kanno.

Listen to the "Battle Point Unlimited" one again, at least. That one has the most validity I would argue.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Rory pointed out one of them, but as far as I know, three songs from Budokai nearly replicate Stratovarius songs:

Challengers>>>Hunting High and Low (The Featured Video on that Challengers video is actually Hunting High and Low too ironically.)

Move Forward Fearlessly>>>Glory of the World

Warrior from an Unknown Land>>>Infinity.

This video points it out a little better, but you can pretty much hear the resemblance.

I've also heard people compare Thrilling Time to Black Sabbath's Iron Man. I guess Kenji Yamamoto just loves Stratovarius and Black Sabbath. You be the judge on that claim.

EDIT: Edited this post over a year later because I now realize that "Believe in the Supreme Power" and "Zero the Hero" don't sound alike at all. Also, I fixed the link for Thrilling Time, since the previously posted video link was removed.

This is what I really don't like about Yamamoto and my most favourite of DB composers is Kikuchi.

His music in Dragon Ball Kai seems pretty original so far.
