If anything wouldn't it be Puer, like the tea? That way he follows the same naming convention as Oolong?

Awesome avatar by the way! :D

Well, his name is a play on a particular type of tea, which is why you see us romanize and adapt it as "Pu'er".

"Pooal" is certainly an accurate way to go about romanizing it, but it doesn't do much in terms of the intended name pun.

Well, "accuracy" is kinda a tricky term to use when discussing how to romanize fantasy character names that are plays on (but not supposed to actually be) food names. But "Pooal" is the usual romanization used on Japanese merchandise.

I use Puar not since it's what the dub uses but what the Katakana translates to. I didn't know why people called it Pu'er though but I like Puar better.

But the katakana "translates" to "puuaru", not "Puar".

Pretty sure "Puar" isn't anything but some English translator asspull.
Never seen the drink actually referred to as anything other than various variants of "Puer", both with and without ', - and an h placed somewhere in the latter syllable.

I prefer the "Puer" spelling, it's the least clunky one.

I was wondering, shouldn't the translation from the japanese media be taken very serious?

For example, no one would question the name of One Piece protagonist because it appear in the manga itself

Besides there are also the names used in the Databooks, such as "Gecko Moriah", which are taken as the "official" translation

Well, unless Toriyama wrote it as "Pooal", then I don't really think of it as automatically 100% official.

Heck, aren't there even names he wrote out that we don't think of as automatically 100% official? The "Kulilin" hat on Namek comes to mind.

Well, that's a good example (and I haven't noticed it until today).

I think fans SHOULD take the translations that appear in the manga as official. At least that's how One Piece or other wikis takes it, and I must they are very reliable in translations.

However, I am not that sure about the Dragon Ball databooks.

For the record, the Swedish translation uses "Pool", so there are people using that outside of Japan. Although there is an "a" missing.

You can, and that's fine. It makes sense to use Kulilin. What I am trying to point out though is that even though Toriyama himself drew "Kulilin" on the hat, there is a huge portion of the community, myself included, that uses "Kuririn."

Yeah, it's one of those complete misinterpretations coming from the German (or is it French?) translation, and spreading throughout. See also "Meister Quitte" and a couple other.

Yeah, we call him "Mester Kvæde", and I used to believe our version was translated straight from the source.

Indeed. The entire "Meister Quitte" thing is explained here.

Check out his jacket when he arrives at the 23rd Tenkaichi-Budokai. It says "Kuririn." :D

Didn't he use Klilyn at one point?
