Yes, I have a DB Question (Cosplay)

Why do people cosplay as DB characters?

Watch your eyes.

Greg, please put better warning signs around that thing. I was definitely not prepared enough for that. >_<

I personally believe that there are some anime series that just can't be cosplayed realistically, unless you have the budget of Lord of the Rings to hire Oscar-winning special effects and make-up people. Dragonball is one of those series. Part of it's the Saiyajin hair which is really hard to pull off, but just in general the look of the Z Senshi. What I mean is, most people just aren't buffed up like them, so that's also part of why it looks terrible. Let's face it. Seeing a pot-bellied, scraggly-armed Goku just doesn't look very good.

I've seen some of the characters work, but those were ones that tend to look a lot more "regular" human in appearance, such Maggie's #18 cosplaying. Videl a lot of times looks fine, Pan, I saw a pretty nice Chi-Chi once too. I've seen one good Mirai Trunks done by an Asian guy, but I believed it worked because he just did him in base form, so it was just a matter of having a pretty regular hairstyle and dying it purple. I've seen pictures also of a Roshi that looked pretty good too, but ya all in all, people just end up looking silly.

If people however want to cosplay, that's their perogative. It's a free country and more power to them and all that, but there are just certain characters I look at and know there's no way that it will ever look very good or at least definitely know there's no way I'm ever going to look like a carbon copy of that character.

I've seen a few good Krillin cosplayers. But the worst I've seen was a pic of a guy dressed as Majin Buu(non fat). Let's just say the Buu antenna looked like a certain part of the male body.

I know the pic you're talking about because remember Sonic I posted it up on Randomness. XD

Here are some more examples of why Dragonball cosplaying certain characters doesn't work:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v176/ ... f/bad2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v176/ ... f/bad6.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v176/ ... f/bad9.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v176/ ... /bad25.jpg

And the scariest one I think I've ever seen:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v176/ ... f/bad8.jpg

Anyway, I'll try and see if I can track down some that have actually been done pretty well for comparison and to prove my points above. For now, you can always check out Maggie's A Lovely Cyborg site to see her cosplaying as #18. She actually looks good. And no I'm not just saying that Maggie, it's the truth. 8)

Wow. There are only two of those pictures that I see as a reasonable (or partially decent) attempt at cosplaying as such characters, and I'll tell you which ones, and why:
  • Image 1, Bad22.jpg:
    - I like where this person took the idea of Majin Buu, because other than the abismal eye design and the antenna that looks like a rather mishapen penis, he pulls of a rather decent Super Buu. Had the person spent a bit more time with the makeup, and obviously his -human horn- on the forehead there, I think it could have been the best Majin Buu costume I've ever seen. [And I've seen a few, none of which were anything to sneeze at.]

    Image 2, Bad9.jpg:
    - The only thing I like about this is the hair, they didn't go for your standard wig, instead opting for something a little more unusual but in turn more authentic. I like that, because frankly most of the wigs I've ever seen sucked, and this if coupled with a person who could actually pull off the buff appearance of a DBZ character would probably be the best cosplay outfit one has ever seen for the series.
Dear god some of that shit is just horrible...

Oh, dearest fanboys, fangirls and otaku from around the globe. Were it not for you, how would we be entertained?

Family Guy? Oh...right, well, there's one alternative.

Did... did that person just cosplay as the doujinshi version of Bardock's wife?

An example of an impressive cosplayer, indeed. Thought I'd save people the trip to lovely Cyborg.

The Dende one is actually well done. Reminds me of a '60s Martian movie, though.

Like JerseyMilk said, DragonBall is just one of those series that shouldn't be cosplayed.. with the exception of the more human-like characters (the Artificial Humans, for example). However, the greatest DBZ cosplay of all time is of no human, artificial or otherwise:

Haha! Oh man, that Buu antenna  ...

I have a some to share. Here's a dude on deviantART (who happens to be the pal I mentioned who hated Budokai Tenkaichi so much as to compare it to Sagas..) who does photomanips (sorry, haven't seen much cosplay).

And here's a Buu one on dA as well.

Here we go again...
  • Android 18 Image:
    - Like as has been said before, it doesn't get much better than that!

    The Dende Image:
    - Dear god... do people make it their perogative to go half-assed, and not try to blend their face-painting in with their appliances?! Fuck... that's not right.

    Vegeta hair photo-manip:
    - Sillyness, but the guy pulls off the look pretty well just being himself.

    Ginyu Tokusentai image:
    - I must say, it is the best Ginyu Tokusentai image I've ever seen, but Gurdo and Jheece seem to be lacking in a few departments.

    The self-manip DB Gallery:
    - This guy... uh, well he's not very good, and doesn't have the physique to pull off any of the characters he did, short of Buu, maybe.

    The Buu-guy:
    - Well, he certainly pulls it off in practice, but with the inconsistent make-up job, coupled with those rolls over his ears not colored fully he looses any cool points he could have potentially had. And the tape-prostate sticking out of his forehead doesn't help much either.
The image as a whole is blah city...
And that's my feelings about that.

The Ginyu one is great and if my eyes don't deceive me, they're in some Asian country, which is probably why upon a glance it doesn't suck the soul from my body with a vengeance.

At the first con I ever went too, I saw a few good Trunks's. And there was a good teen Gohan, who got mad at me for calling him Yamcha. (At the time, I had not seen that far into the series).

I know people are going to see this as a prejudice comment, but I've found that Asian people tend to pull off cosplay better than others. A lot of times because they make a more accurate costume for one.
