Puns

Post by Eclipse » Wed Dec 14, 2005 12:06 am

Is there ever a character in the manga or anime that has a name with no pun whatsoever. We already know most of the characters have puns regarding Japanese culture or some pop culture references. Some of them are a bit harder to figure out (Dabura's, for one), and a couple are quite funny (The Red Ribbon Army, and King Piccolo's)

So is there any character we know that has no pun regarded as of this time?

I'm not sure about all of these, but I'm just naming characters off the Manga Spine art whom I don't think have a pun.

-Muten Roshi/Kame'Sen-nin?
-Oolong?
-Yajirobe?
-#18
-#16
-#17
-Goten?

Eh, even some of those...deh. I'll try and think of more.

Oolong is a tea as far as I know. Goten means "air" or something like that.

I've been wondering about General Rirudo (or whatever his name is) from GT and Hachiyaku (spelled wrong, no doubt).

Do they have puns?

All of Gero's creations except for #8 and Cell. Cell is obviously a pun on a cell, and #8 was given a name (Hachan) by Goku that's a pun on the number 8. All the other androids simply follow the series in which they were created.

I think that's it. Toriyama always has his characters' names punned off something, especially in DB.

GT: General whatever-his-name-is and Gill are puns off machine works and metallic instruments. I forget what the pun for the general is, but Gill is supposed to be "Gear." Giru is how his name is written, so the mistake makes sense.

Hachiyaku? ...Can't place him/her so I don't know.

Hachihyaku is a variant(?) of Happyaku, or Eight-hundred.

People who have titles (Kame-Sen'nin, Tsuru-Sen'nin, Kaiô-sama, ect) don't really have puns.

And the character from the Playdia game is Hacchihyakku (or Hatchihyakku).

Well, not really a pun - but their characters are based off of those names: Turtle, Crane and Lord of Worlds.

I guess the characters who were taken straight out of Journey to the West, like Son Goku or Gyuu Mao.

Actually they'd be puns on Journey to the West. :P

What about Angela (the filler-only girl who Gohan goes on that date with)? Some may argue that it's a pun on "Angle" (in otherwords, a protractor, since the other throwaway students are named after school supplies), but the katakana spells it ENJERA or something like that, very close to the English pronunciation of the name Angela. I don't see a pun in *her* name.
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.

Wasn't her name Angel in the Japanese version?

In case any of you guys didn't know (which I'm suprised then, it's kinda obvious), Red Ribbon Army goes with colors (General Blue, Commander Red, "What's his Name (Forgot)" Black...)

Umm....what about those two filler characters, Mr.Satan's proteges, that appear in the Cell Games arc. I think their' names were Piroski and Kironi (Something like that). Is that pun related?

Rilld (Rirudo) is a pun on the word drill (doriru). Simple as that.

Mind you, we're pushing into filler scenes. It's entirely possible that TOEI was nowhere near as pun-strict as Toriyama was. As for Angela... unless it's a pun on Angel I think we found our exception.
