Was Goku USSJ in his fight with Freeza?

Was Goku USSJ in his fight with Freeza?

While I was watching Kai, I noticed that Goku's muscle mass increased significantly during the Freeza fight. Did that mean he had reached the "ascended" forms of Super Saiyan?

It had not yet been developed as a concept, so it's very unlikely. We can just write it off as Toriyama and the anime art staff just coming into their own with how Super Saiyan was supposed to look.

Goku developed his muscle mass after training with Kaio. We just normally don't see him shirtless.

There is a slight increase in muscle mass when someone becomes a SSJ anyway, maybe not as much as USSJ or SSJ2 but it is there, however, the muscle mass increase is much bigger here than later in the story. Like VegettoEX said we can probably write it off in this arc as it was just how they wanted to portray a SSJ at the time.

Toei added this temporary "muscle pump" for the transformations to look cooler, but it's not present after it's over.
