Did Daisuke Gori take on too many roles?

Post by Jord » Fri Jun 01, 2012 3:30 pm

First of all, I really liked his voice and it suited big, bulky characters like Mr Satan and Gyu Mao perfectly. However, the amount of roles he took on in the Dragon Ball franchise is gigantic and every character he voiced pretty much sounded exactly the same as the other roles. To me, this comes across as distracting and breaks the illusion a bit for me. Every time I hear his voice I get reminded of Gyu Mao/Satan/Umigame etc instead and it momentarily distracts me from the series.

Goku's VA has the excuse of the Son's being family so it doesn't bother me as much as with Gori.

Am I the only one in this?

PS this isn't a specific problem with Gori or Dragon Ball but annoys me with other cartoons as well but since I've been watching Dragon Ball a lot lately and you really hear him a LOT.
Jord doesn't have a avatar because the combination of Jord and a equally cool avatar would cause the universe to implode.

Someone cast him in those roles -- it's not like he walked in and said, "Oh hey, I'm going to play so-and-so today!" I know it's probably a minor distinction to make, but the late-and-great took a lot of pride in his work and I wouldn't want to see him taking slack for someone else's decision.

That all being said, yeah, perhaps he got assigned too many characters. Where I think it falls a little flatter than it should isn't when he's playing major characters like Mr. Satan (or even Enma), but like you said, rather when he's playing off-one guys like whomever it was he played during the Garlic Jr. arc. I like hearing him, and his voice defined a good part of my youth, but yeah -- he probably didn't need to be assigned them all.

Then again, he was super-talented and brought a ton of life to every character he voiced, so eh. Moderately-free-pass.

He was casted and I think he does an awesome job with his roles but it does become easy to pick out his voice.

Much like Christopher Sabat in the dub. The only difference is I think for majority of later roles, he casted himself. Wonder how that whole process worked.

I don't think so. Gouri basically came in for three lines an episode for the generic big manly-man types every once and a while. His voice is nice to listen to, too, so I don't think it's that big a deal.

For anyone wondering, here's the list of roles I've spotted him in so far.

Umigame (Dragon Ball episode #2)
Gyuumaou (Dragon Ball episode #7)
Debu (Dragon Ball episode #15)
Large Man (Dragon Ball episode #17)

Dock (Dragon Ball episode #49)
Colonel Yellow (Dragon Ball episode #58)
Tako Priest (Dragon Ball episode #69)

Gora (Dragon Ball episode #81)
Random Youkai (Dragon Ball episode #81)
Random Walla (Dragon Ball episode #81)
Inoshikachou (Dragon Ball episode #82)
Anton the Great (Dragon Ball episode #85)
Bear That Fights Jackie Chun (Dragon Ball episode #86)
Man (Dragon Ball episode #93)
Tall Man Upsetting Little Girl (Dragon Ball episode #95)

I never thought of it as a problem, personally.

To put it bluntly, yes. It's distracting. It was probably both the fault of Daisuke Gori for accepting the roles and the directors for assigning him the roles. He could have easily said no and they simply would have cast somebody else.

Why would he say no? He loved his job, and he died because he couldn't do his job anymore, not to mention the money he would lose from all these roles.

A new counter argument has been created.

Subbies bash Sabat for too many roles, Dubbies counter with Gori who had even more roles.

As for the topic, I'm only familiar with Gori's Yemma, Mr Satan, Ox King and King Cold so I could really care less about the other roles.

His only role that bugged me is King Cold. As soon as I heard his voice, I became convinced that he wasn't that strong and would die soon. But after hearing Otomo's underwhelming acting in Kai, now I miss his King Cold.

I don't see how that is a "counter" argument. In my OP i said that the same goes for American dubbed version or American animation in general.

Why would he say no? Because him saying yes hurt the product the same way Chris Sabat saying yes to every role hurt the dub. It's distracting to have one guy doing all the voices.

I didn't hurt the product that much. It's business, he shouldn't say no. I wouldn't say no.
Also Gori shouldn't be compared with Sabat. Gori did a great job in voice acting, unlike Sabat.

Agreed.

Though it may have sounded similar or the same as other characters, it didn't bother me, at all, I actually liked it a lot.

Admittedly, in Kai, he's improved, and given some of his other roles to new actors.

I've always loved his Cold. It had a really dark, cold feeling to it, which is something Gouri didn't get to use much in Dragon Ball. I thought it gave Cold some stature, of course we all know how easily he dies, so I don't know if that's much of a consideration. :P

Yes, what's your point? He doesn't have as many roles, Piccolo and Vegeta are more distinguishable from each other (although they do still occasionally slip into one another), Yamcha doesn't sound like a fucking surfer anymore, etc.

A new counter to the counter argument has been created.

Gori wasn't cast as three main characters and then continued to have three main characters once Kai rolled around. Gori also wasn't the voice director which brings up a whole different can of worms.

It's a cute idea -- a voice actor of any nationality turning down work he auditioned for and was given.

Let's try to remember that you're talking about a man who slit his wrists because he was going blind and could no longer read the scripts he was given in order to voice the roles he treasured so much. A little respect and compassion might go a long way toward continued conversation on the topic.
