Beautiful Screen Shots From the Season Set Booklets.

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Sun Dec 16, 2012 1:47 pm

So, last night I was ripping some of the production art used in the "season" set booklets. Since they released these as PDF's This is super easy to do. If you don't know what I'm talking about, I was ripping those little solo pieces of art placed around the booklet. For example...

Image

Anyway, as time went on, I noticed some of the art they were using on the top of the pages where screen shots. I clicked one just to see how much of the layers were covering it. It turns out the screen shots where actually bigger and clearer than I had even imagined...

Image

Apparently, they where using full screen shots, in this case a huge camera pan shot, and just layering over what they didn't want to show. I mean, I figured I would get a little more of the image since that's just how PDF's work - in layers. But, I really didn't expect this!

I went all the way back to DragonBall "Season" One and ripped a good 95% of these beautiful screen shots. I didn't wanna post them all here since there's about 50 of them. So, I created a Flickr set which you can check out here, it's the first set on that page:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/65846913@N02/sets/

If you want to see them in their full size and resolution, be sure to right click the image and hit "Original Size". But for now, here are a few example shots...

That was the first thing I noticed too :P

No but these look great, I actually really like the one of Super Saiyan 4 Goku & Vegeta. And also the one of King Cold and Freeza, I never realized just how big Cold is !

I feel like these are animation cels or something. They look super clean, and not just like average screenshots. I could be wrong, but that's what they look like to me.

This is a diagonal camera pan:

And this was used in their Garlic Jr. single DVD box set:

So yeah, these are definitely animation cels. These will definitely help for people into color correcting.

Thanks for the great work Tanooki Kuribo! :D

Yea, I figured the same thing. On the Flickr set I actually called them "production stills" because I figured that's what they were. I mean, it's common for studio's to just take a pic of the cell and background to use for promotional material. I called them "screen shots" here just to give them a more universally known term, I guess...

Ah yes, it's natural. If they are doing the covers in InDesign, and I bet they do. Because we are using full images in HQ big scale because printing machines need huge resolution for ripping the plates, otherwise it looks like hell. You have this square on page for image, so you load the whole huge image and then arrange it the best it fits for you.
So if you have the PDF files that were exported right from the InDesign, you can get some raw data from pictures if you have Acrobat ;)

So, just out of curiosity, and because us DragonBall fans will dissect the shit out of anything... I took a screen shot from the DragonBox to compare. It seems the production still is actually flipped. I flipped it in the comparison shot so they're the same and it's easier on the eyes. Also, there is not frame of animation where Trunks and Mr. Satan both have their mouths open. So, it seems these really are just cell shots\production stills...

Weird choice of pictures sometimes.
They didn't even put a Super Saiyan Goku, not even for the battle against Freezer...
But mostly... Bola's eyes! :) Definately not the best picture they could find.

You found something great there, it's nice to see cels like that with a great quality! 8)
I wish they had chosen more emblematic pictures to represent the show in their booklet!

OT: When I look through all of these, I really like them. It's so clear and these shots are in such high quality too. I really wish there were more of these.

Yeah, except the clouds are a flat painted background and only the characters and ki effects are parts of the actual animation cels. It's more likely that these images are made up of panned screen shots pasted together and they didn't do it quite right on his cape... or that it's actually not painted/drawn all the way on the cel.

These images, btw, are awesome.
