DBZ Legends; differences of PS1 or Saturn
I've been thinking of perhaps one day buying Dragon Ball Z Idainaru Dragon Ball Densetsu (or Legends) but is there any differences between the Sega Saturn and Playstation ports that I should be aware of?

Re: DBZ Legends; differences of PS1 or Saturn
I don't remember exactly, but I think there was some minor differences in the fights. Like in one version there's no little tree/rock models during ultimate moves, and some things are sprites instead of models. Drawing blanks here.
Re: DBZ Legends; differences of PS1 or Saturn
I've played both to some extent but never seen any major diferences to them. The only diference i can recall is that the playstation version is japanese only, but if i'm not mistaken there was a pal version on the Sega Saturn as well as japanese.

Re: DBZ Legends; differences of PS1 or Saturn
Without going back to actually refresh my memory, there are definitely graphical differences between the two (Saturn naturally handling 2D effects better, PlayStation naturally handling 3D effects better), and there are some different super attacks for certain characters between each game.
No special/extra modes or characters or anything like that, though.

I remember the Saturn version having A LOT more trees.
The cover art for the Saturn version shoulda had a sticker on it that said "Now with 50% more trees!"

Thanks guys! I think I may end up with the Saturn version (whenever I get that damn thing XD) since it seems so far to be the better port (and importing games is super easy on the Saturn).

Building onto this discussion, I was curious if anyone else has run into issues with the PS1 version of the game. I've been using the dsic swap trick to get the game to boot up, but for some reason or another the audio messes up on the main menu screen as well as the introductory videos before each level. Would this have something to do with using the disc swap technique?

Yep. It has to do with the fact that the game used redbook audio instead of streaming files. It was sometimes the case that if you first booted with a disc that contained MORE audio tracks than the game you were switching to that it would all work out, but I never had 100% success with this.Milton wrote:Building onto this discussion, I was curious if anyone else has run into issues with the PS1 version of the game. Re: DBZ Legends; differences of PS1 or Saturn
Since this topic has been revived, i'm going to mention that the Sega Saturn version has Freeza transform into all of his forms in a Cutscene. In the PSX Version he transforms directly into his last form.

I always found the Sega Saturn controller better for the game, and from my vague remember years ago, I had more fun with that version.Insertclevername wrote:Thanks guys! Re: DBZ Legends; differences of PS1 or Saturn
Oh God, the Saturn d-pad is the absolute best in the world. I don't understand how nobody's properly copied it. I might even prefer it to an arcade stick!
I've never played Legends but it might be worth checking out these pages that have a general overview and compare the two versions a little bit. Biggest difference is the PSX version has 3D ki effects and the Saturn version just has sprites. I personally prefer the latter because the sprites don't mix very well with the 3D effects.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
I'm just gonna quote this from superpope:bkev wrote:Oh God, the Saturn d-pad is the absolute best in the world. I don't understand how nobody's properly copied it. I might even prefer it to an arcade stick!

First of all, it seems a little more difficult, in that a bit more strategy is required to defeat the enemies.(...) A neat thing that happens in this version that doesn't happen on the Playstation is that occasionally an enemy will hit you and knock you flying VERY far across the ground, through any trees and mountains that might be in the way.(...)
The action is quicker than on the PlayStation as well. As far as gameplay is concerned, I would have to say this one is the best of the two.
Re: DBZ Legends; differences of PS1 or Saturn
After sitting and playing more of the Playstation version of the game, I have to say that I agree with superpope's statements regarding quickness. After getting it around '98 I played the heck out of this game on the Saturn; I can definitely feel a difference in the flow of the gameplay. For the life of me, I can't seem to recall spending so much time with each battle on the Saturn version, whereas the PS1 version has had me playing the first chapter for upwards of a half hour. Fighting Nappa.
I don't know...it could be that I'm a bit rusty from not playing the game for so long, but the copy for PS1 that I have doesn't feel quite the same. I'd say go with the Saturn version.

Do all editions of Dragon Ball Z: The Legends feature We Gotta Power OP Instrumental Version or is it just the Japanese?

The Sega Saturn version looks a lot better, but the combat is a lot slower.
The PS1 version looks a low worse, but the combat is faster.

Re: DBZ Legends; differences of PS1 or Saturn
In all honesty, I think the Saturn version looks perfectly fine. The only exception to that is the animation for finishing moves, which look decent at best. As far as speed is concerned, it seemed to run the same as the PS1 version; the difference between the two is in the feel of the control when initiating chain combos.

Re: DBZ Legends; differences of PS1 or Saturn
The music is probably the same, I think, but what about this:
PS1 - Japan
Saturn - Japan
Saturn - Europe
Is it just a minor design difference?
