Most Nostalgic DB Ads, Trailers, etc.

Post by DragonBoxZTheMovies » Tue Nov 12, 2013 6:23 am

So, what sort of DB ads from back in the day really get your nostalgia juices flowing?

Z CARDS! DESKTOP PATTERNS! LIVE CHAT! LIVE CHAT! LIVE CHAT! LIVE CHAT!I don't even remember if I saw this one as a kid (I think I did), but even if I didn't, it still brings back memories of how popular DB was a decade ago and I think it's a perfect example of the types of things we saw back then.

This one times a million. Brings a tear to my eye. Almost.

I don't think I'd ever been more excited to see a DBZ movie:

I swear, this was on eeeeevery DBZ DVD I use to rent. This sort of marketing definitely worked on me. DBZ had never seemed so hardcore, and something about that "Stars in heaven" quote really grabbed me. 2005/2006 were definitely the most memorable years for me, DBZ-wise (except for maybe 2009/2010). Well, more 2006 actually but I was just picking up on everything that had come out in '05:

I still remember seeing this for the first time, and I can't work out why it sticks out in my mind so much:

Anything Toonami ever put out always caught my attention. To this day those ads make me want to rewatch the series over and over again.

My god. I remember not knowing who 90% of those characters where when I first saw that commercial in 2000 or so. I so wanted that large Super Saiyan 3 Goku, but I didn't even know it was "Super Saiyan 3", so I never could find it. I thought Vegetto was just Goku with a blue shirt, but I found that figure by chance, along with "Cyborg 13". I wanted 'em all man. I had tons of them (but only have a few now. Don't know what happened to half of them). Not only that, but this was way before the Boo-arc aired in North America, so those clips had me completely baffled.

Man those were good times. Not a care in the world, etc. Now I know the world's a terrible place and I'm all depressed and crap. I could go on a whole huge discussion about my nostalgia in relation with Dragon Ball, but I'll save that for another time.

The Fusion Reborn trailer was nicely put together. I already saw the movie long before 2006, but I would imagine it would it make casual fans hype up to see it.

Shin Butoden commercial. Boom.

Image

It hits everything for me. Great drawings, great mood, great showcase, and a glimpse into the future of the franchise that I hadn't yet hit at the time.

There's a lot I can think of but the ones I remember the most fondly are the ones from when CNX started and brought Funimation dub DBZ back to the UK for the Fusion saga:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Y4b6jG-pmY

And this one they used for the Frieza saga was cool too:

And these ones from way back when it aired on Cartoon Network UK.

Pretty much any promotion for the Buu arc on Toonami.

Man, that last one... while it may seem less than favorable to run premiere episodes of what is essentially the same show at two very different time periods, those were my afternoons. Tao and Buu.

Like others have said, pretty much any old Toonami trailer or promo will get me feeling pretty nostalgic. Good stuff all around there. I also have a soft spot for the old Trunks promo that FUNimation did, including the alternate version that was an ad for the CD (which I'm pretty sure is the only Falcouner score CD we got until many years later).

Then there's this little number.

Awwww yeaaaah, check out that sexy, 'state of the art' website! ... :P This one is kind of a funny nostalgia, as it doesn't really remind me of the site (that I only visited like once I think), but more-so of how it was in front of EVERY VHS trailer for a while. Never did know what the hell Cyboars or that something-or-other Brothers thing listed was though.

Ah yes, the infamous “yanena rachiru noya rachimo henachihoya yama tsuna monanaho” ad, LMAO. Makes me nostalgic too though, that was the first time that we could finally have an official, professionally translated release of the Vegeta and Namek sagas...well until they got canned. At least we got most of Vegeta. A dark era had indeed ended.

Any old DBZ promo or the like will make me nostalgic. Makes me remember, when I was about 5 years old I had a DBZ shirt, even though I barely had any idea what DBZ was. I wanted to wear it to school but since it was private school and we had a dress code my mom gave me a hard time about it LOL. Didn't wear it. Lost that shirt a few years later...haven't seen one like it since. :( I remember I also got a Piccolo figure from Burger King...God knows what happened to that.

Hate to be a total downer but...I know that feel. :/

Anyway, I'm partial to this. If this doesn't pump nostalgia into your veins then NOTHING will. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-fwVdIy3Og

From 2:35 to 3:04 is the advert I would use to describe DBZ to someone who hadn't seen it before. It's an example of minimalism being effective. All there is is the action that DBZ is known for, and that's the perfect way to sell it. Kix may be able to pronounce 'Saiyan' consistently with the show (unlike Cartoon Network UK/CNX) but Kix's Kai Cell arc trailer pales in comparison to this.

Actually, I gotta hand it to Kix for this Saiyan arc promo:

Kix knew who they were dealing with when they licensed Kai.

Yeah I smiled when I saw that on TV. It's great too see that Kix know their audience well. I actually thought their Android saga promo was pretty awesome too:

Even though I never really sat down and watched Dragon Ball during its runs on Toonami, I definitely saw all of the Toonami commercials, and those are my earliest memories of the series and my first exposure to it. I made a thread years ago about an amazing site that collected all of those ads, and if you haven't checked it out it will likely bring back some quality memories if you were an American fan growing up with the show. I also listed my six favorite in the first post.
