Perhaps he is afraid of his hidden power. Goku calls him a pampered baby even though he didn't resist fighting Bojack and his gang. Kinda makes me wonder why he never tried to go all out, unless he was either afraid, or didn't know how to again.

Probably all of the above and then some. Humans are flawed and even though we can act uncharacteristically at times, we are capable of redemption. I always saw Gohan as Toriyama's commentary on the value of the human life, so I could see him wanting the character to show weakness as we do while still triumphing in the end. Because we can.
