*snip*

Top right is the image on the disc untouched. It's anamorphic; the ratio as it should be seen in is on the left. Bottom right is Kai's shot clearly out of the ratio it should be seen in.

The Dragon Box encodes are 720x480 but the display resolution should be 720x540 to be correct.
In short, the actual display aspect ratio of so called "4:3" SD digital footage is 15:11. 720x528 is the truly correct resolution here. Read the technical description in my previous post. On the other hand, Kai is HD, so the footage is exactly 16:9.

I've given it a read and altered everything accordingly but I still can't get them to match up. Is that information true for every DVD? The resulting image really doesn't look correct to me.

I can take these shots of Videl and layer them perfectly though - http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/70250

I can't do that with that Kibito and Kaioshin shot.

Yes, it's true for every DVD except for some widescreen ones that are incorrectly downscaled from exact 16:9 HD footage.

The image may slightly stretch both vertically or horizontally frame to frame because of jitter, but the correct aspect ratio is always 15:11. This is so slight that you can ignore it when you normally watch DVDs, but you should keep it in mind when you make a comparison.

Also, when it comes to the Videl shot that you referred to, it also proves that I am correct.

Hrmm, that's interesting. Perhaps I mistakenly let go of shift in Photoshop! How embarrassing.

Would you mind doing that with the Kibito Kaioshin image too then? I'm curious to see all the differences now.

I appreciate the information. Strange that such a minor issue remained present throughout DVD's lifespan.

I tried and they still don't match. I also tried some shots from the same episode with other sources, and it turned out that it was actually the Dragon Box which is stretched.

Kai (16:9) & DBZ Original Broadcast (15:11)

Only episode 213 has vertically stretched footage.

It was originally not an "issue" because DVD footage is actually shown in 10:11 pixel aspect ratio (15:11 display aspect ratio) on TVs. It's just some video players on PC that don't get it right.

Nothing special happened here.
But I like the new BGM that played when Goku and Videl went drawing. Really gave me Dragon Ball feels.
Theres still more to come. :)
A world without Dragon Ball is just meh.

Sure, it's atmospheric, and that's sort of the whole point of getting across a creepy vibe, but melody is everything to me, and it tears my heart out to see how it's become so irrelevant in this day and age.
I know this is late, but it's really nice to finally hear your thoughts on the new score. And for the record, I completely agree with this.

I don't have anything else to say about the music this week, but Takeshi Kusao's performance was easily my favorite part of the episode. I've always really liked the dynamic between Trunks and Mr. Satan. I wish Toriyama had done more with that pairing.
