Is Umigame's name just Turtle in the Anime or does it have some other random name?

In the english dub, Umigame is simply called Turtle as you said. I guess they didn't think he was important enough to give a real name.

I didn't even know he had an official name. o_o;

So what other characters/critters in Dragonball have had their names screwed up or omitted? The only one I can think of is Tamaneko, and I only remembered his name about a year or so after I first heard it... I can't recall any others at the moment... o_O

Whos Tamenko?

I only know of Umigame by Meri's top 5 animal mascots I think it was.
In the manga I think it was Turtle also. But I cant really remember as I dont read much DB manga.

I think Tamaneko is Dr. Brief's little black cat -- you know, the one that sits on his shoulder? He's called Scratch in the FUNi dub.

Actually, I don't remember if "Tamaneko" is his actual name anymore... damn it all... D:

And I laugh at your near-mistake in spelling. :lol:

Oh OK I see. Below is what Wikipedia has to say.

The little cat that is always sitting on Dr. Brief's shoulder. He has had many many years of experience. The North American dub gives him the name "Scratch," where as the Japanese anime names him "Tama."

Ahh, well... I wasn't too far off, then. Thanks for clearing that up. :oops:

As far as I knew Umigame was called Hermit. It must have been the dub with Ian Corlett.

Doesnt Umigame mean Turtle anyway? Or something to that effect?

Umigame is a Sea Turtle.

I think a joke was made when he first met Gokuu. At least, in the Cantonese dub there was such a lame attempt for a joke, I think there was a real joke in the Japanese version ^_~

(Hooikwai = Sea Turtle in Cantonese and Gokuu said kwaihooi accidently, so a Turtle Sea. Yeah, it really wasn't funny)

Something like that happens in the manga too. From vol. 6 of Viz manga:

Goku: Hey!! It's Seat Hurtle!!...

Turtle: Er... That's "Sea Turtle"...not "Seat Hurtle"...

Yeah, Umigame simply means "sea turtle". "Umi" means sea, and "kame" means turtle, and when you put them together, the "k" softens to a "g" (as it usually does in compound words), and you get "Umigame". He doesn't really have an actual name, just his title of "sea turtle" (or "turtle" in the dub) .

The only instance I can recall him being referred to as "Umigame" is in "DBZ: Legend of the SSJ" for the SNES. I think he might've been called it ONCE in the manga too. Then again, I'm not too familiar with the Japanese version of the original Dragon Ball.

Yeah, the japanese joke was the usual 'Gokuh messes up people's names" thing. Instead of calling the turtle umigame he calls him "urigome" which means something like blockhead. Haha..... My favorite was iranai baba.....

Can I ask what "iranai baba" means? I'm not very in-tune to the Japanese version of Dragonball... D:

I think he means "Uranai Baba". "Uranai" meaning Fortuneteller & "Baba" Crone. Viz's manga usually refers to her as "Uranai Baba" or the "All-Seeing Crone"

Well, I mean, Shinpan was talking about Goku mixing up the names, so I assumed she when she said "Iranai Baba," that's what she meant... >__>;;

"iranai baba" is how Goku mispronounces her name when he first hears it, I believe.

I forget what it meant but Daimao explained it before.

I believe "iranai" means "No, thank you," in Japanese.
