I just saw the movie, and it changed my whole perspective of it. At first I thought it was decent, but after I saw the dub, I ended up loving the movie. I was even SURPRISED that the theater was almost PACKED. I thought there was going to be a decent amount of people, but OH SHIT!

Can't wait to see how much it did in the box office. I hope it did a lot like 10-20 million. I'm sure almost every theater was packed.

It seems to be an American thing to be louder and stuff. Not just with this movie of course but I hear how people will clap and cheer during the movies and shout out things.

I wouldn't want that, I pay money to see the movie not hear a bunch of screaming and shouting. Thankfully here people are just respectful and stay quiet. I have seen a movie in US once and it was surprisingly quiet so they aren't all like it.

Unless you're there for opening night at a Summer Blockbuster (And rarely then) it's not like the theaters are a zoo and filled with noise. A lot of movies are made with certain "cues". There are scenes that are supposed to make you "laugh out loud", and scenes to make you "gasp"...whether it be surprise or fear, and there are scenes that are made to get people excited and maybe even cheer. Battle of Gods had someone these cues (Well, really only the laugh cues). For the most part, people simply react to the cues accordingly, and are silent when they should be. That's how my showing was. Not every joke got an uproar, but there are a few "pivotal" jokes that were pretty hilarious, and I'd question the sense of humor of someone who didn't laugh aloud at them, haha.

Personally, if I were to make a movie, and went to see it in a theater with a regular crowd...I'd be a little disheartened if the audience were completely silent the whole time...especially if I had purposely put in things to get an emotional response out of people.

That doesn't happen much. Almost never. Just a stereotype. Unless its an action pack movie and people cheer the badass movie or like BoG nostalgia. Korean movies do this at times too. So it's not just Americans

Also had no visual issues either; everything looked crystal clear. For the record, I saw the movie in New Mexico.

As for the audience discussion: perhaps it's just in my area, but the audiences do tend to be more respectful and quiet during movies. What kind of theaters are Fathom distributing to? Both theaters I've been to were apparently streaming Screenvision's versions and both theaters were Carmikes. I'd like to go see it from the other distributor with surround and the whole shebang. Third time's the charm you know!

On audience: I don't mind it when folks are responding to cues so much. There's some funny stuff in the movie, though albeit sometimes you do miss little things here and there because of it, and it's not like watching it at home where you can rewind...but meh. What I mind is when I pay $200 (or any amount of money) that I don't to go see a the Eagles (or any show) and you pull out your phone and check Facebook through the entire thing and you are sitting next to me. Put the phone away and pay respect to the artist (or whatever) and the folks around you who want to enjoy the show.

EDIT: Actually, I guess I'll retract my Fathom question. I did a little Googling and the two Fathom theaters near me only had showings yesterday and today.

I was in a Georgia showing too! Although in my experience, everybody IMMEDIATELY recognized Pilaf and the instant he and the crew showed up he received amused gasps and laughter. They were roaring throughout all of his antics.

Yeah, my theater had a similar reaction. I was impressed! It was hard to tell exactly, but it seemed like most everybody in the theater loved Dragon Ball and was having a fun time, but weren't such huge fans that they knew everything about the film. The Pilaf reveal seemed to really surprise and delight them!

So, I ended up only taking one friend, who had seen DBZ on TV, and didn't follow it super closely. So he knew who the main characters were and stuff, but asked who "the guy in the glasses" was (Gohan) and things like that.

We noted that the theater ended up filling up pretty quick! It was a smaller theater than some, but it's still impressive! Right before the movie started, a couple large groups of friends had to split up because there weren't enough spots for them when they arrived. There was a pretty nice mix of kids and adults.

Like I said, people seemed to be enjoying themselves. The first half of the movie, before the big fights, everyone was cracking up. It was so fun to be in a theater full of people loving the comedic parts. By the time Super Saiyan God came around and Goku was fighting Beerus, I noticed that the previously boisterous crowd had become silent. Not sure if they were just enthralled, and enjoying the action, or if it was starting to lose their interest. I think the former, because by the end people were chuckling again, and there was even applause.

Funniest thing I overheard? When Goku transformed to SSG, someone behind me (I think a little boy) said, "Shouldn't he be bigger?" This ain't Brolli, kid!

As soon as the credits began to roll, a lot of people got up, but many also stayed behind to see all of the manga pages, and Goku's final "Kamehameha." My friend had a great time, we both really enjoyed the movie. He noted that Toriyama's art looked really great at the beginning of Dragon Ball, based on what he saw from the credits, and asked to borrow it from me some time. I'm going to lend him my VizBig Vol 1 tomorrow!

Not to go off topic too much, but on this whole 'talking' during the movie thing...is it really that rare for people to enjoy that? I can understand it being annoying if someone is doing nonstop yakking, or if they're speaking too loudly, but...

Take for example, my recent trip to go see Guardians of the Galaxy. There were only five people in the theater, my girlfriend and I, and this group of two guys and a girl. We sat in the very back, and at first they were seated directly in front of us. We always tend to talk a little bit through the trailers, commenting on whether or not we want to see said movies, but we speak in whispers that are barely audible even to us. Eventually though, this "bugged" the people in front of us until they moved further away, and even later turned around to chastise us about it - and this was all still during the trailers, mind you. Once the movie itself started, we - as we always do - barely ever talked at all, and what little we did do was, again, in a voice so low that we could barely hear ourselves. The group of three people ahead of us though talked much louder than we did and yakked through much more of the movie, the a-holes.

So yeah, so long as someone keeps their voice down low enough, is it really that bothersome to a majority of people for someone to talk in a theater, or gasp at the shocking parts, or laugh at the funny parts, and so on? To me, so long as it's done respectfully, that just means they're all the more into the movie. Just my two cents anyway.

So the version being shown in U.S theaters is the originally theatrical version, not the extended cut, correct?
Anyhoo, I'll be looking forward to watching it again with my friend and brother this Sunday. We watched the original Japanese version late last year.

Round 2 of Battle of Gods was just as good as the first! The theater I went to this time added an extra show! Same time in a different theater. Both sold out. I saw it with my cousin who isn't into DBZ, but said he'd watch it with me. He enjoyed the hell out of it. Even said he was gonna get it on Blu-ray when it comes out. The crowd was great, the sound was better than the first time. It was loud, but not too loud, enough to enjoy it. Can't wait for round 3 on Saturday.

Unfortunately, we did not get to see Battle of Gods. The local theater that played it was organized through Fathom events. Both nights, they were unable to play the movie due to technical difficulties with the satellites that apparently send the movie to the projector to play. So we didn't get the movie at that theater at all. Also, The fathom events showings are only two day showings so it really was the only chance left to see the movie in my area. Words cannot describe my anger and frustration towards Fathom Events. Hopefully they'll have extra showings to make up for this.

I went to see the movie today! I saw it for the first time. I avoided spoilers like the plague. Never watched the Japanese version. The wait really payed off because I had a ton of fun. And I LOVED the movie. I think it is the best Dragon Ball Z movie ever made by a pretty wide margin. I could go on and on about the parts that I liked, but suffice to say, the entire movie was great. Bravo, Toei and Toriyama.. Bravo!

Seeing BRAND new Dragon Ball Z in the theater with a room full of fans was so much fun. I'm still beaming from it. I had such a blast. I brought my wife, my two brothers, and my best friend with me. The theater was SOLD OUT! We got there 30 minutes early and bought our tickets, not expecting much, but shortly thereafter they ran out of tickets. My friend showed up late and they turned him away. So he had to buy tickets to another movie and sneak in. It was so awesome to laugh with everyone and to clap with everyone. I can't believe the place was sold out [proof]! The dub was phenomenal. Battle of Gods is my new favorite DBZ movie. It felt like it had the same spirit as the show. It wasn't just mindless ass kicking. It had humor and tons of fan service. I couldn't have asked for anything better. I had an amazing experience watching it today. And I have high-hopes for the next movie!

Ok, that was awesome. Basically shattered my expectations. Epic. Hilarious. It has it's what I view as minor flaws, like with a few newly made up retcons, and the mention of Vegetas brother, which is totally Toriyama throwing in our faces that his 09 special, happened.. lol. All the characters were great, especially Beerus and Whiss. They made the movie, besides Gokus super saiyan God mode and the whole last fight. It was so kik fuckin ass!

English voice actors were great. Enjoyed the dub so much. Music was good. Animation. Omfg. This is how you animate DBZ fights. Both Goku vs. Beerus battles were fantastic.

Beerus is hands down my favorite movie villain. He's so personable. Goku was perfect whole movie, only thing that kinda got to me was Vegeta being a little ooc. Yea I get it he's God of Destruction but wasn't too crazy about the new retcon, and his dance, omg never again.... Although Beerus as a character completely won me over so by the end it didn't bother me.

Good saiyans banding together and defeating the evil saiyans. Don't like this, but I get from Toriyama's DB-0 chapter, that this is where he wants to take things. Fine. SsjG is cool, but how it came to be was meh.

Overall this being the first time seeing BoG, and on the big screen no less, I had an awesome time. So much fun watching this. Absolutely loved the ending, and the manga pages during credits. Very nice touch. The final kamehameha was sick. Sean Schemmel is a great Goku I never thought so till I saw dubbed Battle of God's.

Also noticed how the manga pages ended right at the final panel of the boo saga. Gokus smiling victorious face.
No pages of the 10 year gap arc. Yea since this movie is 8 years before those events. Movie was great. Can't wait to buy it and watch it subbed.

I went to an AMC theater and it was also a Fathom event. Only issue I had was that it was uncomfortably loud in some spots.

Saw it yesterday and was damn near blown away almost like it was all new to me. Apart from Shenron sounding too much like Vegeta and Piccolo, the voices were great. I know when I first heard English Beerus in Battle of Z I complained that his voice lacks a "raspy" feel to it… Now, idk if it's the same guy behind the cat but a happy medium seems to be met and I'm satisfied.

Also being that it was in my native language I was able to understand everything better and thus the jokes came out better. Like when Goten says "aawwsome" after almost everything Trunks says or when Trunks said Mai was his "Main Squeeze".. I definitely wasn't expecting that lol.

Also as someone said earlier Pilaf's and Oolong's voices are the type that makes almost anything they say funny. The part with the Oracle Fish was funny as hell too. Beerus asks for reassurance about the Saiyan god prophecy and she just looks around all goofy and goes "Did I say that?".. "Well I guess I did!". To me that was one of those "LOL.. What?" Moments.

On side note there was this one kid who kept trying to be funny almost the whole damn time.. He kept blurting out abridged Popo and Nappa jokes. He actually genuinely got everyone to laugh one time but kept trying to follow up for just about the rest of the movie. Kami knows I had half of mind to wring his neck but I was too amazed by the movie and block folks out pretty well when necessary soooo it didn't happen lol.

Overall, I give a solid 8 out of 10. I gave the Japanese the same grade but that was mostly out of excitement because after a while as certain things about the movie started to float around in my brain my likeningness to it faded down to about a six out of 10. The dub really did it justice though and my final score is an 8. Will be definitely buying the home release.

One more thing, I think the fact that we know we're getting a follow movie helped smooth everything out for me as well so some questions we may have AFTER BoG will probably be answered in DB2015 if they haven't already.

Reminding me of when I saw "The Incredible Hulk" at the theater I saw BOG at 6 years ago. Audience cheered at the "any last words" scene.

The audio literally sounded like I was watching the thing on my laptop.

There was definitely no surround sound in our screening. It felt almost like completely center-channel coming from directly on top of the screen. It brought down the experience for sure.

Yeah, my screening wasn't surround sound, either. However, it was stereo in stead of mono, but unfortunately the stereo was reversed.

Sound aside, the experience was rather great. The audience (which by the way, the theater was nearly packed) was respectful through the whole movie and, to answer someone's question earlier, everyone was completely silent during the part just before Goku absorbed/deflected Beerus's final attack. Most everyone groaned when Pilaf and co. appeared but they did laugh later on at the gang. One thing I find odd, and this happened when Funimation first showed a scene at that convention last month, many people laughed when Roshi said "get him, boys!"

Another odd thing, there was a very tiny amount of flickering throughout the whole movie. Not enough to detract from it, but enough to notice it.

I loved seeing the manga pages during the end credits. There were cheers at the end which was awesome, and most people stayed and watched until the final kamehameha and I felt like everyone walked out of there a bigger and better Dragon Ball fan.

Some of the groans for Pilaf mentioned may be more like hollering in acknowledgement - like,"OOOHHHH, that goofy idiot's back!" rather than "Oh God, not this guy." It was more anticipation of funny things to come. A similar thing happened when Beerus asked Buu for food because everybody knew the shit was about to hit the fan.

Lol that's not possible not in a million years. BOG's in theaters is a limited release its only in around 800 theaters and most of them only have 1 showing per day for a limited number of days. It's not a major hollywood film being run all day everyday in 4000 theaters. According to the box office thread BOG's did $1,072,600 on its first day. Now as far as anime movies in the U.S. go that's absolutely fantastic you just have to try to keep things in perspective.
