Re: State of the Kanzenshuu: Wiki Status Update
Depends on if they mean just actual warnings that would show up there (I presume, anyway), or if they also mean just verbal posted warnings asking you to lay off/move on/etc. I know I've had a few of those before, but even if those don't count, I don't know the first thing about wiki coding, so...DBZGTKOSDH wrote:(I didn't have any warning since last year, did I? Wouldn't I see them in my PMs?).
Probably for the best anyway though - there are tons of people that know far more than I do anyway, no matter how much I would like to help out, there are people far more equipped to do so.

That is correct. We're only referring to formal warnings, which will be listed in your UCP.AjayLikesGaming wrote:I assume they mean this - - that shows up in your User Control Panel.

I'd say it is negotiable on a case-by-case basis, but I can't make any promises.

My warning level is 2, but those warnings are from over 2 years ago. So what does that mean? I just assumed when time passed, the warning level would go down. Guess I was wrong.Hujio wrote:I'd say it is negotiable on a case-by-case basis, but I can't make any promises.

From what I understand, that means you still meet the basic eligibility criteria, since none of those were in the past year.ShadowDude112 wrote:My warning level is 2, but those warnings are from over 2 years ago. I would have also thought that the warning level went down over time.

James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Nice. Can we get an update on the layout and templates threads about how what you've settled for?Hujio wrote:In light of all this, I've updated the initial post of the thread with our current standing.
Re: State of the Kanzenshuu: Wiki Status Update
This is great news! The list of things done or almost done is already impressive, and the preview pictures really make me optimistic that it will be the ultimate, most professional Dragon Ball database.
By the fans, for the fans, but handled with expertise and maturity.
I should wait for the final release, but I'm already really thrilled about where this seems to be going!
I'll try and jump into the writing wagon as soon as the time comes to translate pages into French, to make this ultimate database accessible to all French-speaking fans too if possible.
But in the meantime, I'll gladly let other people handle all of the original English articles, because I'm not a native speaker and that would show in such wiki articles supposed to have a professional writing style!
I wouldn't feel comfortable writing those!
So guys, feel free to "feast" on writing those English articles which are the main priority right now, I'm leaving it all up to you and I'll just settle for the potential French translation I once mentionned, for which I'll be much more capable (and finally using my Master of Translation for the greater good after all those years).

Re: State of the Kanzenshuu: Wiki Status Update
Are you talking about the layout pages in the "Staff Help Requests" section? Yeah, I plan on going through a couple more layouts over there soon. However, most of them are fairly well established at this point, but there are still some I need input on. I did just posted one for the locations template if you want to check it out.Luso Saiyan wrote:Nice. Can we get an update on the layout and templates threads about how what you've settled for?
At this point I'm really toward heavily focusing on the original Japanese series, and then later building off of that. I know there's been some discussion about including foreign dub names and titles, but that just seems like an awful lot to keep track of in a first go-around. I'd rather get a nice base of information built up and then when we're comfortable with what we have, expand on it with additional information. Just based on my experience, I don't want to bite off more than we chew right off the bat. Thoughts, anyone?
For those that have been asking, you don't have to be super familiar with the wiki markup code to be in the first group of pre-launch beta testers. However, it will help you if you are. For the most part, although not always, a lot of it is very much like the BBCode you use here on the forum. And if you're at all familiar with basic HTML coding, it's a very simplified version of that. If you are interested in being a beta tester, be sure to watch the "Staff Help Requests" section, as that's where the request thread will be posted.
Re: State of the Kanzenshuu: Wiki Status Update
I think you should just stick to only using the original names. I mean, if you start catering towards stuff like the FUNi dub, then people will start requesting you add other dubs, and it can be become overwhelming.

Re: State of the Kanzenshuu: Wiki Status Update
I agree 100%. I would prefer to stick to the Japanese names, maybe with a note in the sidebar listing the Viz/Funimation names. Non-English names wouldn't work out very well as demonstrated by the Wikia, and would be a lot of work to add.Hujio wrote:At this point I'm really toward heavily focusing on the original Japanese series, and then later building off of that. Re: State of the Kanzenshuu: Wiki Status Update
I definitely agree that original names should be priority number uno. I think that listed other dub names at all could quickly become very time consuming and create a lot of unnecessary clutter. Of course, if part of the intent of this wiki is to correct misinformation, I can see why it might be seen as important to include the dub terms so fans ignorant of the original names have an easier time understanding.

Re: State of the Kanzenshuu: Wiki Status Update
Count me as another one who agrees that focusing just on the original names at first is probably the best course - as you said yourself Hujio, may as well not bite off more than you can chew. Using just the names that are second nature to you is gonna make things a lot easier I'd imagine.
That said though, I do still think that having a listing of all known "official" names, and where they originate, on a side bar would be extremely helpful, as well as just a nice curiosity, to have listed on the sidebar of pages (as well as perhaps a search filter, or whatever you'd call it, that would allow searching for dub terms to take one to the proper page right away). Something like, say, the Mr. Satan page listing on a sidebar that his 'Other Names' are 'Her-cule (Viz, FUNi dub (cut)), Hercules (France), Mr. Savage (...wherever that came from)', or even for Tullece, 'Tur-les (FUNi dub)'. Things like that.
Again, that's just something I'd love to see long term though, and not something I'm expecting to see right off the bat or anything. A wiki like this, especially with the name that Kanzenshuu has in the DB community at large, is in a really unique position to finally educate some of the more casual fans a little bit, by means of just having the information there to see, rather than the 'telling them to their face/in internet conversation' method that, from my experience, just doesn't seem to work as well.

Re: State of the Kanzenshuu: Wiki Status Update
Well, I think foreign dub names don't have a place on the pages, they are not useful to anything for local readers and if you didn't live in the country, it could be easy to accidentally tell lies.
All that we need is:
- The name chosen by Kanzenshuu, which will be used all over all articles.
- In a special "official names" section, a mention of the latest update to the official manga translation of the country (so the Viz translation for the base pages).
- In a special "official names" section, a mention of the latest update to the official dub translation of the country (so the Funimation Kai dub for the base pages).
So really, I think you should avoid putting 20 variations so that it stays clear. One name will appear naturally all along the article (the Kanzenshuu one) and under an "Official names" section, it would be just "official manga name for our country right now" and "official anime name for our country right now", presented in a very short and clear way, much like:
And that's it!
Speaking of names that were used in France, Spain, Italy and so on, would be useless to somehow reading the English article. And it goes both ways, most French or Italian or German fans will care about the name in the original Japanese version and in their country, but won't care for what the US made of it.
In localized articles, it would be the same but for the specific country: for France, the Kanzenshuu name all over the articles, and a mention of the latest official French manga name and the latest official French dub name.
For a potential Spanish article: the Kanzenshuu name all over the articles, and a mention of the latest official Spanish name and the latest official Spanish dub name.
Let me take an example, like what would be on a French page (since I don't really know what kind of changes the US went through with names).
The article would use Kanzenshuu's chosen "Son Goku" all over it. Then in an "Official name" section, you'd just have two lines:
- OFFICIAL FRENCH NAME IN THE MANGA: Son Goku (previously Son Gokû and Sangoku).
- OFFICIAL FRENCH NAME IN THE ANIME: Son Goku (previously Songoku and Sangoku).
All that we need is:
- The name chosen by Kanzenshuu, which will be used all over all articles.

Re: State of the Kanzenshuu: Wiki Status Update
Alright, so I've made some more progress with layouts and navigation, and have subsequently updated the initial post. At the moment I'm going through and reviewing user rights, to make sure none of you can do anything you're not supposed to be able to do. There are a couple more layout things to wrap up, along with some security things, but otherwise we're hitting the home stretch to a soft launch! (I know I make it sound so close, with very little work left to do, but really that's just to make me feel better about how much work there is left to do... )
I guess at this point, are there any questions floating around that I haven't answered about our soft launch yet? I'll try to answer as many as I can, but be sure to bare with me.
