To make the movies canon, what changes would you make?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

I think most of them just need to be re-written to fit manga's plot. Though in some cases, even their main antagonist/villain must be re-done... There are villains so bad portrayed that even gets popularity out of nowhere.

Nothing. They're already a part of the Dragon Ball canon.

But if I were to align them with the main Dragon Ball continuity, well....
Assume all power levels are adjusted to match changes.
Remove Krillin from the Movie 1.
Remove Goku from Movie 2, set it during the year spent training for the Saiyan, and remove Piccolo being brainwashed. They still come looking for Goku, but are unaware that he's dead. So they grab Gohan during his training instead. Gohan gets pissed, and handles the henchmen, with Piccolo showing up to help.
Same with Movie 3. Have it more or less immediately follow M2, and remove Goku. Gohan goes enraged ape and distracts Tullece long enough for Piccolo to dispatch him.
Set movie 4 directly after Goku returns to Earth. Replace False Super Saiyan with SSJ.
Movie 5 is fine.
Set Movie 6 during the 10 days before the Cell Games, and have Goku teleport everyone to New Namek instead of taking a ship there. Leave Vegeta and Trunks out, as they would be in the ROSAT and waiting his turn, respectively.
Set Movie 7 on the day they arrive back from Namek, and have that coincide with Vegeta and Trunks completing their training. Have Goku still be weakened from his fight with Cooler in the previous movie.
Set Movie 8 after the Cell Games, and remove Goku. Have Gohan finish Broly off instead.
Movie 9 is fine.
Set Movie 10 during the time spent training for the Budokai. Keep Videl out of it.
Have Movie 11 take place over half an hour or so, and have Goten and Trunks resolve all that between them leaving the Budokai and finding Krillin and Piccolo. Remove Krillin from the movie. Remove the Mr. Satan/18 stuff.
For Movie 12, just do what Buu's Fury did. Remove the dead people being revived, and have Goku deal with all that stuff after his time runs out on Earth. Vegeta gets his body back for the movie because Enma was saving it, and remove Paikuhan.
Movie 13 is fine.

I'd place Movies 2, 3, and 5 during the three-year training period while adjusting for the Super Saiyan discovery. Not sure what I'd do with Movie 4 or the others. I'll have to ponder on this.
There is no Dragon Ball canon.

Movie 1: Gohan has not been born. Goku goes after Garlic only because his minions beat up Chi Chi, Ox King, and took the dragonball. He stops by Bulma's for the radar, Yamcha and Krillin accompany.(Reference later in the manga/anime-Piccolo is irritated that Goku forgot he wears weighted clothing.

Movie 2: Takes place one year before the start of Z. Gohan has not trained under Piccolo and doesn't appear in a fighting capacity in the movie. When Goku goes to Wheelo, he's already accompanied by Yamcha and Krillin. Quadruple full powered Kamehameha is how they win at the end.

Movie 3: Takes place after Freeza's defeat on Namek and all the Z Fighters are alive. Turles and his men believe that Freeza is dead. Goku is training on Yardrat. Vegeta takes Goku's place in the movie. Gohan does not regrow his tail or become an Ape. Icarus doesn't exist. Vegeta shoots Turles with the Final Flash to win(even uses the same dialogue he used/will use against Cell)

Movie 4: Takes place at the exact same time as Movie 3. Lord Slug is already young, he attacks Yardrat, wishing to take their resources. Key Yardratans replace Krillin, Gohan and Piccolo, with Goku finally mastering Super Saiyan when he kills Slug.

Movie 5: Takes place during the three years training for the Androids. Cooler makes a reference that he knows Freeza and Cold was killed on Earth. Icarus still doesn't exist. Krillin is the one who goes to K0rin's Tower, and is the one saved by Piccolo. Gohan is the one who attacks Sauza in a rage, and Krillin remembers Yajirobe's last bean.

Movie 6: There's just too much wrong with this movie, and trying to find a place in the timeline just makes it worst.

Movie 7: Takes place during the Cell Games wait. Goku and Gohan are undergoing their FPSSJ training, Vegeta and Trunks use their USSJ level when fighting. Trunks also has long hair and doesn't have his sword.

Movie 8: Takes place during the Cell Games wait. Goku and Gohan are undergoing their FPSSJ training, Vegeta and Trunks use their USSJ level when fighting. Goku uses the Spirit Bomb the same way he did in Movie 7

Movie 9: Takes place after the Cell Games. Gohan doesn't need Goku's help-He masters SSJ2 right when it looks likes he's about to lose and kills Bojack.

Movie 10: Dragonball Multiverse Chapter 12 is probably the only way to do it.

Movie 11: There's just too much wrong with this movie, and trying to find a place in the timeline just makes it worst.

Movie 12: This takes place one year before the Buu Saga. Gohan and Videl don't know each other, but at one point Gohan does save Videl before moving on to kill Freeza. Goku eventually escapes from Janemba to find Vegeta and convince him to use the Fusion Dance. (Reference later-The experience traumatized Vegeta, so he repressed it, and is even more against all fusions in the Buu Saga) Goten and Trunks don't fuse.

Movie 13: Takes place a year after Kid Buu's defeat. Hoi is willingly possessed by Hildegarn and is attacking Earth for fun. Tapion and Minota were not sealed in a box for eons, but were tasked to kill Hoi for the almost genocide of their race. The dragonballs are used at the end to restore Minota back to life, and to send Tapion to him.

Keeping Canon plot mostly on the rails

1. Gohan and Piccolo kill Garlic's henchmen when they attack him during the 1 year training. Garlic attempts to assault the lookout, half for revenge on Kami, half as a suicide by cop. He's killed by Tien's Kikoho

2. Dr. Wheelo gathering the balls draws Kami's attention, and he dispatches the Z Fighters to stop him. Tien and Chiaotzu melt the ice with Dodonpa, and Wheelo tries to steal his body. Yamcha, Krillin, and Yajirobe take out his bio warriors then help fight Wheelo, with Krillin landing the final blow with a destructo disc

3. Tullece attacks the planet Vegeta was one before he went to namek. He and his men are killed by vegeta

4. Slug attacks earth whilst Goku is just about to leave for namek. Goku defeats him as he cannot use the Dragonballs to restore his Youth

5. Cooler and his men come to earth with Mecha Frieza and King Cold. After Trunks kills the other two, Cooler decides to fuck off with IT and Rule the universe as a tyrant who's just benevolent enough to escape a saiyan beat down

6. Big Gete Star is working on it's own, Doing it's thing when Goku comes to retrieve Dende. Goku Goku's it

7. Dr. Gero activates 13, 14, and 15 to defend him from 17 and 18. They fail

8. Mostly same except Gohan and Goku are SSJ through out and Gohan wins the day by flashing to SSJ2 for a brief moment as he did in the chamber

9. Same

10. Set during Videl's training, Gohan gathers the Dragonballs as a training exercise. Rather than using a wish, he wins thanks to back up from Vegeta

11. Same, set post series

12. Neither Goku nor Vegeta are dead when it starts, they just go to the afterlife to solve the problem. From their, things go as they did in the movie

13. Same

Canon goes off Rails

1: Raditz searches Garlic's palace before Piccolo, and kills Garlic's three henchmen. Garlic swears revenge and begins looking fro the DBs to aid him. Whilst doing so, the canon Raditz stuff happens. Garlic gets word from Roshi about the Saiyans, and begins to train so he can get vengence by proxy. He joins the fight with the other Z warriors and manages to make it out alive alongside Krillin and Gohan. He decides to Go to namek with them. As a butterfly, Nappa survives with a broken spine, and eventually decides to go to Namek with Goku after he offers him a senzu bean

2. Kochin, unable to collect the Dragonballs, is recruited by Doctor Gero, with the understanding that his help will result it Wheelo being freed by Gero.

3&4: Slug and Tullece both go to Namek seeking the Dragonballs, unaware that Frieza is there. Slug wants Youth, Tullece wants new seeds for the Tree. They engage in a forrway war against Frieza and the earthlings, but once all the Henchmen are dead, Garlic manages to Broker an alliance against Frieza. Once the Dragonballs get collected, one wish is used to bring Piccolo to life and to namek, then the second is used For Slug's youth. They convince Tullece to use the third wish for a different purpose , as they can let him use the earth Dragonballs. Tullece and Slug are killed by Frieza's third form but are revived later. They decide to hang out on earth.

5: Cooler meets Goku on Yardrat and after a short fight, surrenders and offers to help him train. The way he figures it, His father will seek revenge on Goku, and Goku will have no choice but to Kill him, resulting in him being placed in charge of the empire, and he can make it less tyrannical to avoid another hero coming about and killing him (Cooler is very genre savvy here.)

6. King Cold takes Frieza to the Big Gete star to get him a new body, which Results in Frieza killing him. Frieza then goes to earth to get revenge, resulting in a three on one with Goku, Future Trunks, and Cooler.

7. Come android time, Doctor Gero takes 14 and 15 with him, along with upgraded versions of Wheelo's Biowarriors
once Only Gero is left, He activates 17 and 18, who in turn kill him and activate 16 and 13. The androids are later pursued by not only Cell, but a second bio android, remotely controlled by Wheelo made to be his perfect body. The second Android is eventually killed by Semiperfect Cell, as is 13

8. Same as the normal movie but with this verse's expanded cast and an altered ending. Goku ITs back to earthand Convinces Cell to help in fighting Broly. Cell does. It's most even with Cell in a slight but growing lead, until Broly gets in a lucky blow which makes Cell regurgitate 18, then repeats it intentionally to make him hock up 17. He then vaporizes Imperfect Cell, and is eventually defeated with a Spirit bomb. Cell survives, regening into his perfect body but with only the power of Semiperfect. This shakes him to his core, and Goku is able to talk him into changing sides as a means of forging a new identity for himself

9. Mostly the same but with some added scenes of Gohan rescuing kid Videl. Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan two when Hercule is killed trying to protect Videl. Bad times for Bojack ensue

10. Broly is struck with Amnesia from the spirit bomb, and is taken in by Hercule and Videl, who make him part od the family. Once Videl and Gohan start dating, his memories resurface but he chooses his new life over his old after a bit of struggle

11. Bio Broly is another attempt to create a perfect body for Wheelo, and is eventually killed by the real broly.

12. happens the same as in my first list

13. Same

They're already all canon in my mind, but distributed through a number of timelines:

DBZ Movies 1-6 take place in a splinter timeline where Garlic Jr. kidnapped Gohan and wished for immortality. This created a situation where Gohan's hidden power was made known before the Saiyan arc. This leads to battle with Nappa and Vegeta where more fighters survive waiting for Goku. This lessens the damage Goku has from the fight, which expedites his healing time, which heavily alters the Namek arc. Movies 2 through 6 occur in order after everyone defeats Freeza on Namek together.

DBZ Movie 7 occurs in the first timeline created by a Trunks. He and everyone else defeated #17 and #18 with the shutdown controller. Movie 7 then occurs. Afterwards, this Trunks returns to his timeline, only to be killed by Cell.

DBZ Movies 8, 10, 11, and 12 take place in another splinter timeline, only in this one Vegeta ignores Cells temptations to allow him to become Perfect. Cell escapes by the skin of his teeth, and Goku and Gohan cut their training short. With no scary bug monster, Paragus makes his move on Earth and Movie 8 happens. Afterwards, Cell sneaks up on #18 and achieves Perfection. The Cell Games are announced, and transpire as usual. After the timeskip, Movie 10 happens while training for the Tenkaichi Budokai. Buu gets released, Vegeta dies, etc. Only this time, Goku actually makes good and kills Fat Buu himself instead of merely stalling him. Goku returns to the afterlife, and things return to normal. Movie 11 sees #18 getting her money from Mr. Satan, and then shit goes cray cray with Movie 12.

Movies 9 and 13 fit well enough within the main timeline. 9 also fits well enough in with Movies 8, 10, etc.

Nothing. They're already a part of the Dragon Ball canon.

But if I were to align them with the main Dragon Ball continuity, well....

Movie 1: remove Krillin. Insert a line at the beginning of Z, if possible, where Goku vaguely references teaming up with Piccolo before.

Movie 2: Don't care.

Movie 3: Set it during the Saiyan arc training period. Adjust Tullece and co to be much weaker, with Tullece in particular being more like an actual low-class saiyan in power. Since the humans, Piccolo, and Gohan are all RELATIVELY close in power around this time, they can all team up to defeat Tullece and his pirates. In particular, a sudden boost of rage-induced power from Gohan is able to turn the tables at a decisive moment, which further interests Piccolo in his potential. At the end of the movie, everyone celebrates their victory over the alien invasion, mistaking it for the one they trained for, only for Piccolo to chime in with: "No, that wasn't it. Those guys were only around as strong as the first saiyan; his partners are way stronger. Plus, there's only supposed to be two additional saiyans, and they're not supposed to show up for another year". The movie ends with everyone going back to training.

Movie 4: Set it immediately after Goku returns to Earth. Touch up the Super Saiyan design to resemble the final version. Have Yamcha and Tenshinhan show up to fight Slug before anyone else and start slaughtering foot soldiers, only to get curb-stomped by Slug's named henchmen. They're in the same boat as Gohan, basically. Instead of having SS Goku beat down Slug and then drop out of the form, have Slug transform into a giant so he can fight Goku on even terms. He has a power advantage and gains the upper hand, but ends up losing anyway due to Gohan's whistling and the Spirit Bomb. Piccolo ends the movie with a remark that Super Namekians are quite a bit more powerful than he thought, and says that he hopes to become one, referencing his later fusion.

Movie 5: Nothing really needs to be changed, just for it to fit into the timeline. I'd prefer if Cooler vs SS Goku was more of a fight, rather than just a beam struggle, and if the movie was more explicit about how strong everyone had gotten, but that's unrelated to the "canon" issue.

Movie 6: Make it clear that it is happening maybe a few months prior to the arrival of the androids. Remove the scene with Dende as God. Heck, this one nearly fits already.

Movie 7: It already fits fine, as part of one of the alternate timelines. Just make that explicit in the movie itself, e.g. show 17 and 18 getting shut down by the remote. Trunks comes back to say hi, and gets caught up in another android battle.

Movie 8: Set it during the Android arc training. Vegeta come across Broly and Paragus while traveling through space. Everything goes more or less the same. Vegeta ends up defeating Broly (who is much weaker in this version, obviously; maybe moderately stronger than Namek SS Goku) after a rough fight by finally ascending to Super Saiyan.

Movie 9: Nothing really needs to be changed. Well, maybe one thing: instead of having Gohan get beaten down in SS, have him get taken out by a sneak attack early in the movie. Then, when he comes back later, having been saved and healed by his comrades, he turns SS2 and effortlessly wrecks the Bojack gang. Him not turning SS2 doesn't make sense when he can do it at will later, after several years of not training, and him losing in SS to the goons doesn't make sense when Trunks can go head to head with Zangya alone.

Movie 10: Remove Videl, remove Ghostku, and set it during the Budokai training. Broly gets a massive zenkai similar in proportion to the one Goku got on Namek, but ends up being defeated by the combined might of Goten, Trunks, and Gohan nonetheless.

Movie 11: Have it take place over a short time span; immediately after the tournament, while Goku and co are busy on the ship. Remove Krillin.

Movie 12: Remove the dead people being revived. Goku, Vegeta, and Pikkon are just called up to deal with Janemba in Hell, while the kids are dealing with Buu.

Movie 13: Nothing really needs to be changed. Well, aside from the power issues, obviously.

Movie 14: Have Mr. Satan recognize Dende. Have Gotenks use SS3 and, in the spirit of Movie 15, just outright remove Gohan's Ultimate power-up and have him use SS2. Fix up the plot hole with the amount of wishes Shenron can grant. Fix Bulma's age and Mai's age.

That was fun!

He's probably referring to the Bardock special. Zarbon was the one who first recommended destroying Planet Vegeta because the saiyans were rapidly growing in strength.
It was actually Beerus disguised as Zarbon #StayWoke
Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

Movie 1: Replace Krillin with Yamcha, Remove Garlic's plan to kill Piccolo and THEN make a wish, have it be Goku & Kami vs. Garlic, have Goku be knocked out for the Gohan rage scene so he is unaware.
Movie 2: Fuck this film.
Movie 3: Remove Goku, set it in the 1 year training for the Saiyans and make Piccolo the main hero.
Movie 4: Remove Goku, set it in the 1 year training for the Saiyans and make Yamcha/Ten/Chaozu as the jobbers and Piccolo/Gohan/Krillin as the heroes.
Movie 5: Not much, just make Goku go SSJ straight away and the fight more of a challenge for him.
Movie 6: Remove everyone but Vegeta, Vegeta encounters Coola while training in space, gets SSJ during the fight and beats him.
Movie 7: Alternate Universe where they shut down the other Androids with a remote.
Movie 8: Happens during Cell Games 10 day wait, only Vegeta and Trunks go to space.
Movie 9: Keep the same.
Movie 10: Wont happen since Vegeta kills Movie 8 Broli in my vision.
Movie 11: See above.
Movie 12: Alternate Universe where Gohan or Gotenks killed Buu.
Movie 13: Keep the same.

But Goku would be the only Super Saiyan, and the only one to fight against the Gete Star.

Well, I haven't come up with ways to try and fit all the movies in, but I do have a way for Fusion Reborn to fit.

(Oh, also: Bojack Unbound fits in perfectly, anyway.)

It is after the Z Fighters have defeated Buu. After even the party they all have celebrating their victory (the one Goku was late for because he saw a deer). In the Afterlife, King Yemma has been inundated with mountains of paperwork from all the planets Buu destroyed before he was lured to the Afterlife (in the anime, he went on a Kai Teleport killing spree before he followed Goku and Vegeta to the World of the Kais.)

(In a filler episode during the Saiyan arc, Kami explains to the Z Fighters about Planet Vegeta and notes that it was destroyed because that world's Kami saw the evil of the Saiyans and summoned a meteor swarm. Obviously, he was wrong or mistaken, but the idea that other planets have their own Kamis remains plausible. Which means that Buu's killing spree would have pissed off lots of people in the Celestial Order, not just for the evilness but also for the paperwork.)

Goku & Vegeta are summoned to the Afterlife where King Yemma explains that because of the uproar of their actions and their inability to defeat Buu before he blinked several populated worlds out of existence*, they must be punished. Goku, thanks to his life of good deeds is allowed to retain his body, but Vegeta is required to go to HFIL.

*The fact that they only had Porunga restore the Earth before they wished for everyone not evil to come back to life just makes matters worse. Think about it: multiple planets destroyed and multiple planetary populations wiped out. But with only Earth restored, most of the not evil people come back to life only to immediately die again due to vacuum exposure. Which, arguably, is way more evil than what Buu did.

Their loved ones are informed that they're dead again and in the Afterlife, and time moves on. At least enough time for the Earth Dragonballs to recharge (so eight months after the wish to wipe Fat Buu from humanity's collective memory.

Then the movie actually happens. Totally as is, no alterations needed.

Immediately after the movie, in gratitude to Goku and Vegeta, King Yemma restores them to life and tells the Kamis of all the other worlds to get over it.

(Also, as long as sufficient time passes for the Earth Dragonballs to recharge again, Wrath of the Dragon fits in without issue.)

While it's just downright horrible for Yemma to say "Get over the fact your people no longer exist," I do like your synopsis.

Oh, right. I forgot.

In the meantime, Porunga is working overtime. The Namekian year is, what, one-third of an Earth year. Assuming Porunga's recharge time remained the same or close to it, he can grant approximately nine wishes per year, all of which can be used to revive multiple people. Depending on how the wishes are phrased, they can get this squared away quickly.

Gohan defeats Buu. Movie 12 serves as the epilogue to the series, with Goku's adventures continuing in the afterlife while Gohan and Gotenks protect the Earth without him.

Yeah, I like this. It'd be easy to make Boo's soul the cause of all the weird shit leading to Janemba, as well.

Movie 13 I actually really like, so I'd have that happen with Goku and Vegeta dead. Gohan would basically take over Goku's parts, maybe without the Dragon Fist though.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

All that sounds pretty awesome. That's a What-if saga just waiting to happen in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2.

I make cooler movie 1 cannon. Since you can argue he came down during that three year time skip with androids.
The first broly movie makes sense. Minus a few issues here and there. It could fit during the wait for the cell games. I want that cannon.
Then Bojack. You can say it's a few months after the cell games.
And lastly movie 13. You can argue it takes places a few months to a year after buu saga. Which fits perfectly. It can take place before yo son goku and friends and movie 14 battle of gods

Place the first Broly movie in the ten day space before the Cell Games since putting it after means Gohan has to beat him instead of Goku. The second Broly has to be right before Babidi comes to Earth and the third one doesn't exist. Cooler in the three years between Frieza and the Androids, second Cooler movie also in the ten days before the Cell Games, Bojack fits already, and Fusion Reborn is just way too much to fix.
