With DBS, think 2008 Special might get licensed?
Seeing as the 2008 Special is somewhere around the same time as the new series and recent movies, do you think we might see this special finally get licensed and released?
Seems appropriate enough to fit it in as a special feature when DBS hits blu-ray, maybe even transmit it within the series run if plot and timeline wise it makes sense.
Probably won't get licensed though.

Re: With DBS, think 2008 Special might get licensed?
I actually asked FUNimation about this the other day on twitter, and got the following response:
The full conversation was about whether they'd try to pursue licensing the 2008 Special to include as an extra on a hypothetical Dragon Ball Super release. For reference, here's a link to the original twitter conversation: https://twitter.com/FUNimation/status/6 ... 2766204929All we can say right now is stay tuned to our blog for some info on that as it's still developing

I'd love for the 2008 OVA to get licensed and eventually dubbed because it's really awesome. But honestly, I'm not expecting much.

I'd probably take that as a positive sign overall. I'd like to see this Special, too!

Re: With DBS, think 2008 Special might get licensed?
You know what I wouldn't mind? A collected Blu-ray release (either from Toei or FUNimation) with the 2008 Special, Episode of Bardock and Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans.
Re: With DBS, think 2008 Special might get licensed?
Indeed, there's a whole bunch of other interesting little tidbits from the 2008-15 period, like the Super Collaboration Special last year. It would be wonderful to see these packaged together, but I suspect that we will only see them packaged as bonuses for other things- perhaps extras on a future Super Dragon Box or whatever they release those as.
Re: With DBS, think 2008 Special might get licensed?
Well, this is a pleasant surprise! I do hope this gets dubbed. Would love to see it and add it to my modest DB collection.

Why didn't I think of that?

The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

My guess that it could be a bonus feature in the Buu saga Kai blu-ray and DVD boxset. It will give people a reason to buy the Buu saga of Kai.

If they ever do get it, I can almost guarantee you that they'll give it a release of its own. Why throw it in as a bonus feature when you know fans will buy a whole 'nother, separately-priced DVD for it?
A dual release containing the JSAT special and "Episode Of Burdock" would be ideal.

A whole disc for a 22 minute feature? Doubtful. If they ever do it, they'll have to put something else with it.MagicBox wrote:If they ever do get it, I can almost guarantee you that they'll give it a release of its own.

Maybe, but it is a coveted special people want to see. It's got enough clout that enough people would swallow the slimness of it.Luso Saiyan wrote:A whole disc for a 22 minute feature? Doubtful. Re: With DBS, think 2008 Special might get licensed?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the special have an extra layer of issues to its release with regards to the companies involved?
I don't recall reading about the Dragonball 2008 JSAT special in particular, but I remembered reading about the One Piece one and it was aired at the exact same event.
IIRC, USUALLY a Dragonball (Or One Piece) property is an adaptation of material that's licensed from Shueisha and the Manga Author by Toei, and Toei officially owns the anime product to do with what they will because they hold that license.
In the JSAT specials' case tho, it was commissioned by and produced exclusively for a Shueisha event, so Toei doesn't have the license lock stock and barrel for it, it's more like they own it 50-50 with Shueisha. This is why you STILL can't buy this special on DVD in Japan, and the only way it was released was through a special mail in campaign.
Therefore, any attempt to get it on FUNi's part doesn't just have to go through Toei, but also Shueisha, and that causes a massive issue not present with other DB Properties.

Re: With DBS, think 2008 Special might get licensed?
It's a 34 minute feature, exactly the same length as the combined material on FUNimation's Fullmetal Alchemist Premium OVA Collection DVD. It's not unheard of. Throw in the textless opening / ending, release it at a budget price, and bam. It's all you need.Luso Saiyan wrote:A whole disc for a 22 minute feature? Doubtful. And like I said, releasing it with "Episode Of Burdock" would be ideal. Both JUMP specials, one disc.
It was also released as a bonus feature on the Japanese "Battle Of Gods" special edition home video releases, which can indeed be purchased.DemonRin wrote:Toei doesn't have the license lock stock and barrel for it, it's more like they own it 50-50 with Shueisha. Licensing from both companies does require an extra bit of paperwork, but I like to think we'll get it one day.

I stand corrected, but if it's only the special edition that has it, isn't there a chance then that it will go out of print and only the standard edition will remain?MagicBox wrote:It was also released as a bonus feature on the Japanese "Battle Of Gods" special edition home video releases, which can indeed be purchased.

But my point still kinda stands either way, it's apparently not as easy as licensing from Toei like they usually do, and does include at least some level of extra hoop jumping.
I hope we get it one day too tho.

Re: With DBS, think 2008 Special might get licensed?
Speaking of licensing, IIRC, Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans was requested by Bandai Namco, was it not? Perhaps they have exclusive distribution rights to it which would also complicate things.
It's fine for a DVD, but since Blu-ray is a more expensive format (to both sides), I don't see them releasing it with just one 30-minute feature. Perhaps bundled with EOB, yes.MagicBox wrote:It's a 34 minute feature, exactly the same length as the combined material on FUNimation's Fullmetal Alchemist Premium OVA Collection DVD. But that was also only on DVD, right? Even the one bundled with the BD version.MagicBox wrote:It was also released as a bonus feature on the Japanese "Battle Of Gods" special edition home video releases, which can indeed be purchased.

Was that special even animated in HD?
