Dr. Slump before Dragon Ball and Jaco?
I'm trying to organize my manga and I'm not fully sure how to it "Chronologically" I have Jaco then Dragon Ball (and Z) and Dr. Slump. Sould Dr. Slump go before Dragon Ball or even before Jaco??

Re: Dr. Slump before Dragon Ball?
It shouldn't really go anywhere. Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball really don't mesh together - it's not like a full-on shared universe like Marvel or DC or whatever. They're two entirely separate series by the same author that happened to have a crossover, which depending on who you ask involved actual travel between fictional universes in order to be possible. I guess it's kinda like the old Marvel/DC crossover comics in that sense, or John Munch showing up on The X-Files.
When you get down to it, asking where Dr. Slump fits in Dragon Ball chronology is like asking (to continue with my John Munch analogy) where Law & Order: SVU fits into Arrested Development - it doesn't, but I suppose after Jaco and before DB makes as much sense as anything just going by the characters' ages. The crossover definitely takes place after the end of the Dr. Slump manga, at any rate.

Wasn't there a Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball crossover episode? So it's technically the same universe, no?

Also, is Dragon Ball Minus separated from Jaco? If so, it comes earlier than Jaco, of course.

Technically, but then I don't remember the Sun and the Moon being living things with faces in Dragon Ball. Puts a whole new spin on all those folks blowing up the Moon, doesn't it? And Ōzaru, for that matter...fadeddreams5 wrote:Wasn't there a Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball crossover episode? So it's technically the same universe, no?

Re: Dr. Slump before Dragon Ball and Jaco?
Not always. You can say that Arale in Dragon Ball is not the same character in Dr. Slump. There could be a Arale within in the Dragon Ball universe and a Goku within in the Dr. Slump universe. Having crossovers and cameos from the same creator does not mean that they exist in the same universe. Both Evagelion and Gurren Lagann are made by the same company and have cameos of Rei & Asuka in a episode of TTGL. Neither shows exist in the same universe.fadeddreams5 wrote:Wasn't there a Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball crossover episode? So it's technically the same universe, no?

Toriko and Goku show up in an episode of One Piece and that's not a shared universe either. It's just a crossover, simple as that.
Same with Dabura showing up in Sandland.

Re: Dr. Slump before Dragon Ball and Jaco?
That's different though. Unlike the Dragon Ball/One Piece/Toriko crossover, which can easily be disregarded as non canon, the Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump crossover had important plot developments and repercussions for the Dragon Ball story. If those events were non canon, then we're left with a big hole in the Red Ribbon Army arc.Bullza wrote:Toriko and Goku show up in an episode of One Piece and that's not a shared universe either. Re: Dr. Slump before Dragon Ball and Jaco?
I have Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball on different shelves (and actually they're not even on the same floor of the house), so that simplifies things for me...!
For what it's worth, I put Jaco at the end of the manga followed by Neko Majin.
"Dragon Ball Minus" is within the Jaco collected release, right at the end; you can't separate it out.

I personally think Dr. Slump takes place inbetween Jaco and Dragonball.
I'm one of those people who think all of Toriyama's works take place in the Dragon World.

Re: Dr. Slump before Dragon Ball and Jaco?
I like to think that Dr. Slump, Dragon Ball SD, and Neko Majin take place in a parallel (gag) world from the manga, but because of an accident with one of Senbei's inventions (after the end of the Dr. Slump manga), the whole Penguin Village was teleported into the Dragon Ball manga world. That would explain why the crossover didn't happen in SD, and for those who don't know, the future events of Neko Majin were shown in a chapter of SD, and Neko Majin is stated to take place in a parallel world in Chozenshuu 4.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.
Re: Dr. Slump before Dragon Ball and Jaco?
The story of Jaco is told by Omori and it happens just before Dragon Ball, so technically it's a flashback. That means that Dr Slump happens before the Jaco manga, but the main events of the Jaco manga actually happen before Dr Slump.
However if you include Jaco, you hsould also probably include Sachi-chan and Jiya as well since they are also related to the Galactic Patrol.

Re: Dr. Slump before Dragon Ball and Jaco?
Just to weigh in on this myself, I also tend to like having things in chronological order on the shelves (series in-universe wise, I mean), so for my shelf I've currently got Jaco in front, followed by Dragon Ball/Z, and then what few Dr. Slump volumes I have so far are at the end after that. I've given up trying to figure out an exact place to put Dr. Slump in relation to DB, because Slump is just...that...insane.
Oh, and I also like to group author's material together, so Sand Land and Cowa! are sitting there at the end past Slump too.

Ugh. It's people like you that are the reason the ordering of The Chronicles of Narnia got all screwed up. Chronological, my sexy ass!
In all seriousness... well, the above is actually how I feel. I arrange things chronologically according to release. The original Star Wars trilogy always goes in front of the prequels. The Magician's Nephew is the sixth Narnia book, not the first. And I plan to put Jaco at the end of my Dragon Ball manga collection.

But...but the author's intended order! Intended order man!
Though with my copy of Narnia it's not like I've got much choice...all seven books, in chronological order, put into one massive volume.

Re: Dr. Slump before Dragon Ball and Jaco?
Intended order, my fanny. If he'd intended to put it out in that order, he would have put it out in that order. And don't say you're trying to claim that Jaco is Toriyama's intended order before Dragon Ball. The background events of Jaco wouldn't make any sense if you didn't already know Dragon Ball. That's why it's called a prequel. It's a pre-sequel, operative word being sequel. Same thing for Narnia, where, in The Magician's Nephew, the book immediately opens by saying, "This is where Narnia came from," because it's assuming you already know what the hell this "Narnia" is.
