Episode #0472! Mike and Julian go behind-the-scenes to discuss some of the recent name spelling disparities between not just the official licensees, but also with us here at Kanzenshuu. What is suddenly driving this attempt at consistency from the top down, and why do we sometimes feel the need to be different? Where can you compromise, and where should you not?

Original comment prior to the server corruption:

This question is directed to either Mike or Julian: What are your stances on Viz's "Burdock" against the most commonly used "Bardock" spellings? Which would you say is more appropriate, and why?

I had noticed the site-wide change to "Boo" and was glad to hear you discuss it. Actually, after reading the topic, that was primarily what I was hoping you'd bring up, weirdly. You did not disappoint! I wouldn't mind hearing more in-depth discussion on more name translation choices in the future. And thanks for the addition of Spotify as a playback option!

Maybe someone here might be able to answer, you often see Son Gokou on merchandise, particularly figures, whats the story there?

The most common assumption is that Bandai decided to use "Son Gokou" as a transliteration of "Son Gokuu" to help English speakers properly pronounce the last syllable. My guess is they assumed that people would see the "ou" and pronounce it like "you", but I would say that's not at all what native English speakers would assume. In most English words it's more of an "ow" sound, like in "cow". Unfortunately the "Gokou" spelling has stuck with Japanese companies, even though "Goku" has been popularized around the world, and is overall properly pronounced, at this point. Another fun naming choice. :D
