Even though I was excited for Season 2, it was the Bardock movie abridged that gave me hype. Everything Kaiser picked up went in on this, plus extra fun stuff. Fantastic, after that I always expected TFS to exceed my already high af expectations and yes, they always did. :D

I have enjoyed this very much so far. They spoke on all of this broadly with the TotallyNotMark tie-in videos, but this is minute-by-minute and even more minute, and there are still a couple of jokes I wanted expounded upon that got cut off by other comments. I never knew that Scott got his Dragon Box footage, at least initially, from someone else. I guess I had thought that season 2 roughly coincided with FUNi starting to release their versions and he just made the natural upgrade, but that wouldn't explain where the Bardock material came from. I realize I have never seen Bardock in Japanese, which is probably why I don't remember it very well and didn't have a very high opinion of it, and TFS's version honestly didn't help. It was a teaser of things for editing and music placement, but for all the running jokes it introduces it was pretty firmly "Season 1: The Movie" for me. Which, hey, it was. Season 2 proper was when this became something I watched to something I was really curious to see develop. And here we are!

Just like Dragon Ball since Chapter #4.

Oh, yeah, Scott got the Dragon Box footage from someone on this forum who no longer posts regularly, unfortunately. They were really cool.

Dragonball Z Abridged Creator Commentary | Ep. 11-12
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XeiKkn ... rStarBento

Another great talk in the beginning about how the acclaim the team was getting pushed Kaiser to be better. and how there was a critique on TFS trying too hard because of that. And a little talk about how the series' comedy and writing changed. I love all three seasons, but Season 3 was where I thought to myself, I could probably watch TFS on cable or streaming with an original property and share the show with my mom.

After that initial first season, they really began to come into their own as an abridging team and began setting the gold standard.

I very much appreciated Scott at the beginning talking about how people say DBZA's another dub of the show, or the definitive version of it & it's like, no, it's not. There are a TON of changes. Some people may prefer the way TFS handled certain things compared to the source material, which is fine, but it's no replacement for the original stuff. I genuinely think most of the people who say that either haven't gone back to watch the original material & are mainly remembering it through a hazy memory of watching it as a kid or teen & playing the video games that recap the manga & anime stories as story modes, most of which cut out a lot of material for the sake of faster pacing to get either to the next big story beat, or the next big fight. Genuinely, those people should either go back to watch DBZ again, watch Kai, or read the manga because as many things TFS did well, there's also stuff they didn't do well at all.
I still have problems with Gohan's character development & him hating his father so irrationally. Even for DBZA, it's overdone & has caused an unhealthy amount of the fandom to take the "Goku's a bad father" joke too seriously. Goku's not a bad father in the original stuff. When he gets to just hang out with his family & have fun with them, he's actually a good father, even if Chichi pulls a lot of the weight with the childrearing. That's not even filler shit, or the stuff from the Super anime either. The manga even shows that. I'm willing to bet that if they didn't initially promise Buu, then changed their minds a year later, they would've put that shit to bed because tat's the 1 dangling bit of character stuff from DBZA that's left that I wish we would see resolved. People in this fandom who legit think Goku is a bad dad because of DBZA need to be told to stop thinking that way because it's just not true. Yees, Goku's made some questionable choices as a parent, but it's only a few.

Agreed. it's a lot like Yugioh Abridged, but happened much faster. That show really started to become its own thing in season 2 as well, then LK took inspiration from TFS & his season 3 was also a drastic improvement in almost every way.
Only dubs that matter are DB, Kai, & Super. Nothing else.

To be fair, Kami's last conversation with Piccolo, and Gevo's recording to Gero inside of A16 were glimmers of brilliance. A superfan's delight, and to the folks who have no interest in watching a straight dub, they are shown a level of pathos you'd only really see in more modern shonen that is willing to look inward.

To be fair, didn't Toriyama actually confirm that 16 was based on Gero's son before that episode came out? They just had a similar thought & had that shit animated around the idea. I think Toriyama's in a phase where he's ok with doing stuff like that. He's been doing stuff with characters since the Broly movie (or even halfway through Super) that has looked towards the fandom for ideas & I wonder if he's been rereading the manga or rewatching the anime to get back into the material more as time's gone on & expand upon stuff. Like that 16 backstory & giving 17 & 18 real names. I honestly wouldn't mind if he kept doing stories that answered or expanded upon previous stories or characters that could use them or just included those details in them. It'd be really cool.

Yeah he did, but, Toriyama said Gevo was killed in a battle that had nothing to do with Goku.

They just had a similar thought & had that shit animated around the idea...
Similar thought, wholly different way of execution. Toriyama said what he said as an afterthought. Didn't even think of combining the obvious enmity that comes from Gero losing his son to Goku. TFS picked up Toriyama's fumble. Whether you think of that moment or not as good expansion, or TFS just being a broken clock right twice, it still affected viewers. That is why, whether you, or TFS, like it or not, people call the abridged series 'their definitive version.'

God, I can't wait for them to cover the reveal that Zarbon has a girlfriend. I remember twelve years ago posting about how I was convinced that there was going to be a twist reveal of Zarbon being straight and when it was revealed that Zarbon had a girlfriend I just fucking jumped.

Of course, now—four years after leaving the closet—I've decided that Zarbon is bisexual (like all fictional characters I like) so funny how things change.

Shortly after episode 15 premiered, I convinced a friend to draw me a picture of fem Dodoria. Nothing lewd or titillating, Just Dodoria looking pretty good in a dress. I regret never getting it scanned, now would be a good time to show it off.

Honestly, my 2 favorite "What?" moments were when Lani looks at Kaiser after Kaiser said that line, "Face down with another man beating your ass. Is it Wednesday already, Zarbon?" gets quoted to him a lot, then when Lani told Kaiser he had that Lazytown song as part of his gym playlist & Kaiser was just so surprised. Pretty good commentary all around. Love rewatching the show this way.

I remember it, but it's been a while since I've watched early season 2, so I forgot exactly where it went. I'm pretty sure it's in the current YouTube upload, though.

You'd be surprised at how nutrious the tears of biphobes are when I just say "That character's bisexual" and they get upset at me.

Also, plot hole in episode 18 that they didn't point out. Gohan shouldn't know Vegeta can sense energy, I'm pretty sure.

I never watched the Ocean dub beyond clips so when Drummond's "You won't escape my wrath" was mentioned to be the rendition Lani would attempt to top, I had to stop and go hear it. Yeah, that was an epic line. And Lani injuring his voice, ouch, but sounds like he would agree to it being worth it in the end.
