In early 2009, Toei Animation announced that a “refreshed” version of the Dragon Ball Z TV series, re-titled Dragon Ball Kai, was being produced for a high-definition presentation in honor of the series 20th anniversary. The first episode aired on 05 April 2009, and by June a home video release of the TV series had been announced, with the first Blu-ray released that September. Unlike the simultaneous DVD releases, the Blu-rays would be released in a standard fullscreen format as opposed to the widescreen format used for the series broadcast. As part of Toei Animation’s promotional strategy, the releases started off with a single-disc starter Blu-ray which was available at a reduced price per episode in hopes of providing fans incentive for purchasing the remaining box sets. The first Blu-ray box set did contain an extra space to hold the starter Blu-ray disc. Each box set contained an exclusive “Dragon Book”, which included behind the scenes information on Dragon Ball Kai‘s remastering process, interviews with cast and staff, and high quality reprints of the DVD cover artwork. The cover artwork for both the DVD and Blu-ray releases was drawn by veteran animator Tadayoshi Yamamuro.
Shortly before the series’ syndicated broadcast ended, Toei Animation addressed issues of possible musical infringement in the series’ background music and promptly began removing Kenji Yamamoto’s score from all yet un-aired episodes, subsequent re-airings of episodes, and home video releases. The score was replaced with select pieces of Shunsuke Kikuchi’s original score from Dragon Ball Z. At this point in time the first six Blu-ray box sets had already been released, all of which featured Yamamoto’s musical score. The release of “Artificial Human & Cell arc” Blu-ray Box #03 was delayed one month to allow for the audio track to be updated with Kikuchi’s replacement score. Following this delay, all Dragon Ball Kai home video releases featured Shunsuke Kikuchi’s replacement score. Toei Animation also began phasing out all of the already released box sets, and although there have been no subsequent reprints of these initial Blu-ray releases, box set collections of these boxes were released in late 2014.
Following the Freeza arc of the series, the Blu-ray box sets were then split up by common arcs. The first four box sets were simply grouped under the Dragon Ball Kai title, but for consistency they are listed below as the “Saiyan & Freeza arc” releases.

In conjunction with the broadcast of the “Majin Boo arc” of Dragon Ball Kai in April 2014, and its subsequent home video release, Toei announced it would be releasing larger collections compiled from the previously released Blu-ray Boxes. The collections follow the previous story arc split with the first 54 episodes comprising the “Saiyan & Freeza arc” and the remaining 44 episodes comprising the “Artificial Human & Cell arc”. These collections feature Shunsuke Kikuchi’s replacement score.
