On 27 July 2018, the 17 original Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z theatrical films were released on Japanese Netflix and Amazon Prime streaming services. The addition of the movies themselves was heavily promoted throughout social media, however it was not announced or promoted that they were actually new, high-definition remasters of the films. Shortly thereafter on 09 August 2018, Toei Animation formally announced the release of these newly-remastered versions of the movies across eight Blu-ray volumes. Each volume includes an 8-page booklet, all bonus features from with the original Dragon Box release, and new cover artwork from Tadayoshi Yamamuro. The initial run of the first volume also included an exclusive box to store all eight volumes.
Production remarks provided by Toei to retailers note that the movies have indeed been scanned in high-definition, and subsequently remastered, from the original film negatives, as was previously done for the Dragon Box releases. In addition, all non-credit versions of the opening and endings are up-converts of those included on the original LaserDisc releases and all bonus promotional materials (trailers, digests, etc.) are presented in their original standard definition format.
Visual Editing & Censorship
The films presented on this release have been visually edited from their original presentation, as acknowledged by Toei, to “be enjoyed by everyone” and in “consideration for their influence upon children”. After conducting a review of each movie’s visual content, Toei removed specific instances identified as obscene or inappropriate for younger viewers. Some examples include, but are limited to, the following scenes from Dragon Ball Z movies 11 and 12.
All edited scenes remain untouched in the versions provided on Amazon Prime and Netflix streaming services in Japan, which launched ahead of the Blu-ray release. Additional visual changes have also been made to certain films, such as digital paint jobs correcting previously-unfinished animation.
