Film Animation Comics

While the original broadcast television series were still in syndication in Japan, Toei Animation began producing theatrical films based on the series. Seeing an opportunity to capitalize on their success and also provide fans an easy, on-the-go way to enjoy them, Shueisha began releasing film animation comics of these theatrical films. The comics contained screen shots of the film presented in a comic format, complete with dialogue and sound effects. However, Shueisha decided to skip over the first seven films that had already premiered and began with the 5th Dragon Ball Z film, which in 1992 was the most recently premiered. After catching up to all of the current movie premieres at the time, Shueisha returned and gradually released all of the Dragon Ball movies and the first four Dragon Ball Z movies, which they had originally skipped. They also released animation comics for all three TV specials, as well as the 10th anniversary movie.

In 2010, following the completion of the Dragon Ball Z TV animation comics, Shueisha released a film animation comic for the Dragon Ball “Jump Super Anime Tour 2008” special, which had premiered two years prior. This was the first special from the Jump Super Anime Tour to be released in a comic format. Unlike the original film animation comics, this comic featured no additional material other than the comic itself.

On 30 March 2013, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods premiered as the franchise’s first theatrical movie in 17 years, bringing with it a wave of new films and a new TV series. With each new movie’s premiere, Shueisha would subsequently release a companion comic.
