A manga version — “Anime Comic” — of the Dragon Ball GT television series, comprised of screen shots arranged in traditional manga format with accompanying dialog bubbles, ran in Shueisha’s Saikyō Jump magazine from 2013 to 2023.
The series was announced in November 2013 (in the December 2013 issue of Saikyō Jump), and began serialization the following month in December 2013 (in the January 2014 issue of Saikyō Jump). For its debut, the series skipped ahead to start with the Evil Dragons arc, tying in with the Dragon Ball Heroes arcade game’s then-current “Evil Dragons Mission” update series (the “JM” or “Ja’aku Ryū Mission” update series).
Upon reaching the end of the television series’ content after 38 chapters in the May 2021 issue of Saikyō Jump, the manga looped back around to the proper beginning of Dragon Ball GT. Alongside the completion of the Baby arc in the July 2023 issue (another 35 chapters), a sidebar splash announced that a new colorized version of Akira Toriyama’s Sand Land manga would begin in the following August 2023 issue. In said August 2023 issue, the Dragon Ball GT Anime Comic was not included/continued, and no word on a continuation has been announced. At this point, an adaptation of the Super 17 arc is all that has yet to be serialized.
The story arc breakdown is as follows:
- The “Evil Dragons arc” (邪悪龍編 Ja’aku Ryū-hen) covers chapters 1-38, originally serialized from the January 2014 (released in December 2013) to July 2019 (released in June 2019) issues of Saikyō Jump.
- The “Space Exploration arc” (宇宙探索編 Uchū Tansaku-hen) covers the next 13 chapters (39-51 of the total run), originally serialized from the September 2019 (released in August 2019) to October 2021 (released in September 2021) issues of Saikyō Jump. Though the final page of chapter 49 in the May 2021 issue included a statement that said the Space Exploration Arc had concluded (おわり Owari), it actually went on for another two chapters (per their own title pages continuing the same arc name and chapter numbering scheme).
- The “Baby arc” (ベビー編 Bebii-hen) covers the next 22 chapters (52 to 73 of the total run), originally serialized from the November 2021 (released in October 2021) to August 2023 (released in July 2023) issues of Saikyō Jump.
Publication Schedule Note
Saikyō Jump has shifted publication schedules multiple times since its original debut in 2011. After the September 2014 issue, Saikyō Jump shifted from a monthly publication schedule to a bimonthly publication schedule, picking up with the November 2014 issue (released that October). Following a brief hiatus after the May 2021 issue for an overall rebranding, the magazine shifted yet again back to a monthly publication schedule beginning with the September 2021 issue (released that August). Keep these timeframes in mind when reviewing chapters below; there are no “missing” issues even when months appear to otherwise be “skipped” (they have not been missed!).
In its Evil Dragons arc serialization, the manga was published with a limited color palette; this was later adapted into full colorization for the collected edition.
When the series looped back around to the beginning of the series to adapt the Baby arc, this limited color palette continued until the the magazine’s refresh mid-2021, at which point it was serialized with a more traditional, full color palette on glossier paper.
The entirety of the Dragon Ball GT Anime Comic appears to have been incorrectly adapted from its DVD masters in terms of a proper aspect ratio. DVDs hold standard definition video at a resolution of 720 pixels wide by 480 pixels high, with pixels that are not squares. A proper 4×3 aspect ratio would result in a full screen size of 640×480, which is adapted in DVD playback hardware (or software) from these non-square pixels to a proper display. The Dragon Ball GT Anime Comic’s screenshots are all wider than they should be, which infers that a raw DVD rips at the non-square 720×480 resolution were used without any correction done to them prior to comic layout.
