"A Final, Solitary Battle - The Father of Z-Warrior Kakarotto, Who Challenged Freeza" is the first TV Special of the Japanese animated television series Dragon Ball Z. The TV Special first aired in Japan on Fuji TV on 17 October 1990, receiving a ratings share of 23.6%. The episode was written by Takao Koyama & Katsuyuki Sumisawa and directed by Mitsuo Hashimoto.

Synopsis
The origin story of Son Goku is revealed, in a Special Episode about his father, a Saiyan named Bardock. It is his son’s birthday, and an unconcerned Bardock is out with his crew, conquering another planet in the name of their overlord, the alien tyrant known as Freeza. Succumbing to a surprise special attack from one of the survivors of the Planet Kanassa, Bardock is given the ability to see the future. A veiled curse in the disguise of a blessing, as Bardock will now be privy to the details of his own demise, the same as those whom he had just killed. Through a series of devastating events, coupled with equally traumatizing visions, Bardock now futilely races against the clock to change future. Perhaps peace can be found in the visions of the future, and all is not lost without hope.

Summary
On the day of his birth, the infant saiyan named Kakarrot is analyzed by the staff physicians on Planet Vegeta, and said to be the son of the warrior, Bardock. Elsewhere, on the Planet Kanassa, under the light of a full moon, a band of lower class ranked saiyan warriors have transformed into their Oozaru forms and are laying waste to its cities and inhabitants.

At sunrise, the band of saiyans, led by Bardock, are relishing in their conquest of the planet. They have heard rumors that the Kanassan people possess psychic abilities that allow them to see the future. Just then, a sole Kanassan survivor, Tohro, springs a surprise attack on Bardock from amidst the rubble. Though the saiyans quickly retaliate, the dying Tohro curses Bardock with his dying words. Having foreboding visions regarding the saiyan invasion of his planet, and his own death by their hands, Tohro has passed that power to Bardock via his attack technique. Now, Bardock too, will be cursed to bear witness to his own destruction and that of his people.

Having blacked out from Tohro’s attack, Bardock is left to recuperate in a standard healing tank back on their home world, while the rest of his crew depart for a mission to Planet Meat. The orders came from the alien overlord Freeza himself. While resting in the rejuvenating liquid, Bardock begins to experience vivid hallucinations. Images of his son, Kakarrot, traveling to a foreign world, growing up, and becoming stronger through many battles with powerful opponents. Also, a disturbing vision of Planet Vegeta exploding torments him.

Upon awakening, Bardock learns of the specific orders issued to his team, and rushes to join them. Stopping only briefly to take a look at his newborn son, he tries to dismiss the visions as nonsense upon the disappointing assumption that his offspring is a weakling. Arriving on Meat, Bardock finds his teammates dead or dying on a barren battlefield. Toma, Bardock’s closest friend, reveals in his dying breath that the whole mission was a setup to eliminate any powerful saiyans who might one day pose a threat to Freeza’s reign.

It is then that Bardock is ambushed by Dodoria’s elite team, the very same who killed his crew. Engaging them four on one, Bardock eliminates them one by one with his quick thinking and confusion tactics. Dodoria, one of Freeza’s right hand men, then attacks Bardock with a large blast that he believes has finished off the saiyan. After returning to Freeza’s starship, they move towards the saiyan home world to finish off the rest. Only then do they realize that Bardock has survived and is also headed back to warn everyone.

Nearing orbit of Planet Vegeta, Bardock’s ship passes another; one headed out into the far reaches of space on a different trajectory. He senses that the occupant is his son. No doubt being sent to conquer a weaker planet not worth sending stronger warriors to. With Kakarrot safely away, Bardock is free to focus on saving those who are left. Yet, on his return, none will be rallied to the cause of combating the looming threat that approaches. Bardock is mocked and ridiculed for even suggesting that Freeza would turn on them. His course of action is clear, in a desperate, final move; he will attempt to stop them alone.

Ascending the steps of the tallest tower in the city, Bardock is haunted by a surreal vision. One of his son as an adult, standing alone on an alien world, followed by an image of Freeza, which prompts him to snap back to reality and fly into the upper atmosphere to prevent the destruction of his world. Once there, he is assaulted by a legion of Freeza’s standard foot soldiers. Though no match for the saiyan, whose power is growing ever stronger by the day, they do manage to slow him down. It is then that Freeza emerges from the top of the ship, and begins to prepare his attack. Bardock, seething with anger at the betrayal of his people who served loyally, launches his strongest attack directly at his oppressor.

Freeza’s rapidly growing death ball simply absorbs Bardock’s attack as he launches the world destroying technique at the planet, completely disregarding the fact that dozens of his own soldiers are directly in the way. Unable to change the course of events that he had foreseen, Bardock is consumed by the attack headed for Planet Vegeta. As he dies, one last vision fills his mind. The unknown battlefield from before spreads out before him, with his grown son at one end, and Freeza at the other. The future is clear to him, there will be a balancing of the scales, and revenge on Freeza will come someday at the hands of Kakarrot. Bardock dies with a smile on his face.

Arriving on earth, baby Kakarrot is discovered in the forest by an old man. Not just any man, but a powerful martial artist who ranks among the strongest warriors on the humble planet. As the infant is there alone without anyone to care for him, Son Gohan decides to adopt and raise the baby himself. Giving him the name “Son Goku”, Gohan takes him home to become his grandson. Thus the story of Dragonball begins..
