The '''''Tenka'ichi Dai Budō Taikai''''' is a large-scale martial arts tournament sponsored by [[Gyōsan Money]] after the defeat of [[Cell]] in the [[Cell Games]]. The tournament included 200 participants divided into eight groups of twenty-five. Unlike a traditional ''[[Tenka'ichi Budōkai]]'', the matches were held first in a "battle royale" style to select the eight finalists. Those finalists would be divided in half in a series of one-on-one matchups. The winners would face off in a time-based challenge against an "alien" (actually a student from [[Mister Satan]]'s school); the fastest victory would advance to a final exhibition match against Mister Satan himself. The full tournament was not held due to an interruption by [[Bojack]] and his henchmen.

==Rules==
The rules resembled those of a standard ''Tenka'ichi Budōkai'' including no killing, no weapons, and disqualification for leaving the ring. The preliminary rounds appear to have been timed as Kuririn's battle zone tipped over when too many competitors remained at the end of the round; he only won by grabbing onto the edge as his fellow combatants fell around him. Additionally, the final match was won not only by beating your opponent but by doing it more quickly than your fellow finalists.

==Summary==

The ''Tenka'ichi Dai Budō Taikai'' was fought over four rounds, although only the first two rounds were completed before it was interrupted by Bojack and his henchmen. In the first round, eight groups of twenty contestants fought "battle royale"-style to determine the semi-finalists. By apparent coincidence, each of the main cast members fought in a separate battle group and, except for [[Yamcha]], each won their respective match: [[Son Gohan]], [[Kuririn]], [[Piccolo]], [[Future Trunks]], and [[Tenshinhan]]. [[Dosukoi]] successfully (and accidentally) defeated Yamcha by knocking over the pillar that he had been resting on. Finally, [[Udō]] and [[Kung-fun]] also won their respective rounds.

In the semi-final, Gohan defeated Udō, Future Trunks defeated Tenshinhan, and Dosukoi defeated Kung-fun. Kuririn faced off against Piccolo and defeated him by default when Piccolo quit the tournament.

The final round with Gohan, Future Trunks, Kuririn, and Dosukoi was not held due to Bojack's interruption. As such, no victor was named and no lucky contestant was able to face off against [[Mister Satan]] at the end.

===Tournament Grounds - Battle Island===

[[Battle Island]] is split into several color-coded fighting areas including purple, green, yellow, red, and orange. In addition to those five areas, additional fighting zones are present between the various towers and scattered around the island to create the eight distinct playing fields for the battle royale preliminary rounds. The semi-final battles started on color-coded stages, but participants were free to move around the fighting areas of the island at will, provided they did not fall out of bounds in the water. The final rounds were moved to the large battle zones of [[Battle Island II]].

Although this environment resembles an island, at least some of the facility is mobile and is sailed to the location of Battle Island II, an actual volcanic island, in the for the final round.

===Preliminaries===

The preliminary battles were fought in eight simultaneous "battle royale" events scattered around the island, on platforms intermingled not far from the spectators. Many of the battles were given distinct colored floors as well as a mix of obstacles such as ledges, pillars, and even moving platforms. As the battles neared their conclusion, the floors could tip as a way to force weaker players off and ensure a victory in time. Although not numbered directly in the film, the stage numbers given here represent their placement in the winners list.

====Preliminary Stage 1====
The first preliminary battle was fought on a flat red battleground with a rocky edge that overlooked the water. A key strategy in this stage was pushing opponents off. Dosukoi unsuccessfully tried to chase several combatants off before they were able to turn the table and swarm him, nearly pushing him off instead. Dosukoi used his strength and their momentum to throw many combatants off even while he was pushed nearly to the edge. Later in his battle, he knocked another fighter into a white pillar which had been erected on the battle stage. Yamcha, relaxing on the top while the battle raged around him, was caught off-guard and fell into the water. Dosukoi ultimately succeeded in being the last man standing and advanced to the semi-finals.<ref group="note">Although each battle stage was only supposed to feature 25 fighters, animators included more than 25 individual fighters in the two scenes that comprised this match.</ref> Dosukoi was the sixth competitor to advance to the semi-finals.

The fourth battle stage was fought in an area with ascending and descending platforms. [[Kuririn]] fought with joy, easily defeating every opponent with a smile on his face. It was only when he realized that [[Piccolo]], [[Son Gohan]], and [[Future Trunks]] were fighting nearby that his mood dimmed and he realized that he was outmatched. Kuririn continued fighting but had not cleared his stage before the platform he was on began to tilt. As everyone scrambled for a handhold, Kuririn was able to find purchase on the edge of the ring. Once everyone else had fallen off, Kuririn became the winner by default. He was the third combatant to make it to the semi-finals.

The sixth battle took place on a raised platform with a red floor, just above the area where Kuririn fought in the fourth stage. This battle was primarily depicted indirectly as Trunks knocked many of the combatants off of their level and out of bounds, landing near Kuririn on his battle stage. Trunks eliminated his opponents quickly and was the second challenger to move on to the semi-finals. In addition to the images below, Trunks also defeated another anthropomorphic Wolf (resembling [[Man-Wolf]], but not the same character as below) and a Tiger (resembling [[Captain Yellow]]).

On an unknown battle stage, a character resembling [[Man-Wolf]]<ref group="note">The wolf closely resembles [[Man-Wolf]] but with with lighter-colored fur. However, Man-Wolf was last seen in [[Dragon Ball Episode 89]] having been transformed back into a human by the [[Turtle Hermit]] and [[Kuririn]]. It is plausible that Man-Wolf returned to his wolf form in the intervening years, but this is only speculation and no official source connects this character to Man-Wolf.</ref> successfully fends off attacks from a variety of fighting styles: kempō, boxing, kung-fu, and even lucha libre. Despite countering attack after attack, the wolf steps off the edge of the fighting platform by mistake and falls into the water. This stage is fought on a flat white platform resembling Son Gohan's stage, but it could take place elsewhere.

For a brief time, both competitors fight just inches above the water and disqualification before gaining altitude again. Trunks transforms into [[Super Saiyan]] and turns the tide in his favor. In his new form, he tanks through Tenshuinhan's ''ki'' blasts to get behind him and knocks him into the water with a single blow to his back. Trunks wins!

Piccolo is aloof and barely seems to think anything of the tournament at all, while Kuririn begins to panic. First, he panics that Piccolo will take the match seriously and use a ''[[makakosappo]]'' against him, but transitions to anger as Piccolo's stance implies that he's dismissing his abilities entirely. As the buzzer rings, Kuririn lunches at Piccolo at high speed but, in his agitation, misses and launches himself off the edge and nearly into the water. He catches himself by flying at the last moment and returns to the ring, but his lack of poise even makes flying difficult. Piccolo grabs him and tosses him back in the ring, complaining that he hoped to have seen some competitors worth his time. With Kuririn lying on the group, Piccolo flies off and forfeits the match. Kuririn wins.

The finals would have been fought as an unusual time-challenge: Each of the four finalists were randomly selected to battle one of the four "intergalactic warriors" that had come to the competition. (Actually, they were students of Mister Satan dressed as aliens.) Instead of battling each other, the warrior that located and defeated their selected foe the fastest, then returned via an elevator to the surface, would with the round. No explanation is given if none of the four finalists are able to defeat their galactic challenger. Although not clearly stated, it is implied that the winner of this final would receive the competition prizes, the hot springs trip and the money.

However, prior to the match, the four selected students were replaced by four actual "Intergalactic Warriors", members of [[Bojack]]'s crew. They kept up the fiction of being part of the competition for a time, but the producers realized the swap after [[Dosukoi]] was apparently killed and the tournament ended prematurely, leaving Son Gohan and his friends (as well as a reluctant Mister Satan) to clean up the mess.

The tournament included 200 participants divided into eight groups of twenty-five. Unlike a traditional ''[[Tenka'ichi Budōkai]]'', the matches were held first in a "battle royale" style to select the eight finalists. Those finalists would be divided in half in a series of one-on-one matchups. The winners would face off in a time-based challenge against an "alien" (actually a student from [[Mister Satan]]'s school); the fastest victory would advance to a final exhibition match against Mister Satan himself. The full tournament was not held due to an interruption by [[Bojack]] and his henchmen.

Additionally, the final match was won not only by beating your opponent but by doing it more quickly than your fellow finalists.

The ''Tenka'ichi Dai Budōkai'' was fought over four rounds, although only the first two rounds were completed before it was interrupted by Bojack and his henchmen. In the first round, eight groups of twenty contestants fought "battle royale"-style to determine the semi-finalists. By apparent coincidence, each of the main cast members fought in a separate battle group and, except for [[Yamcha]], each won their respective match: [[Son Gohan]], [[Kuririn]], [[Piccolo]], [[Future Trunks]], and [[Tenshinhan]]. [[Dosukoi]] successfully (and accidentally) defeated Yamcha by knocking over the pillar that he had been resting on. Finally, [[Udō]] and [[Kung-fun]] also won their respective rounds.

In the semi-final, Gohan defeated Udō, Future Trunks defeated Tenshinhan, and Dosukoi defeated Kung-fun. Kuririn faced off against Piccolo and defeated him by default when Piccolo quit the tournament.

The final round with Gohan, Future Trunks, Kuririn, and Dosukoi was not held due to Bojack's interruption. As such, no victor was named and no lucky contestant was able to face off against [[Mister Satan]] at the end.

[[Battle Island]] is split into several color-coded fighting areas including purple, green, yellow, red, and orange. In addition to those five areas, additional fighting zones are present between the various towers and scattered around the island to create the eight distinct playing fields for the battle royale preliminary rounds. The semi-final battles started on color-coded stages, but participants were free to move around the fighting areas of the island at will, provided they did not fall out of bounds in the water. The final rounds were moved to the large battle zones of [[Battle Island II]].

Although this environment resembles an island, at least some of the facility is mobile and is sailed to the location of Battle Island II, an actual volcanic island, in the for the final round.

The preliminary battles were fought in eight simultaneous "battle royale" events scattered around the island, on platforms intermingled not far from the spectators. Many of the battles were given distinct colored floors as well as a mix of obstacles such as ledges, pillars, and even moving platforms. As the battles neared their conclusion, the floors could tip as a way to force weaker players off and ensure a victory in time. Although not numbered directly in the film, the stage numbers given here represent their placement in the winners list.

====Preliminary Stage 1====
The first preliminary battle was fought on a flat red battleground with a rocky edge that overlooked the water. A key strategy in this stage was pushing opponents off. Dosukoi unsuccessfully tried to chase several combatants off before they were able to turn the table and swarm him, nearly pushing him off instead. Dosukoi used his strength and their momentum to throw many combatants off even while he was pushed nearly to the edge. Later in his battle, he knocked another fighter into a white pillar which had been erected on the battle stage. Yamcha, relaxing on the top while the battle raged around him, was caught off-guard and fell into the water. Dosukoi ultimately succeeded in being the last man standing and advanced to the semi-finals.<ref group="note">Although each battle stage was only supposed to feature 25 fighters, animators included more than 25 individual fighters in the two scenes that comprised this match.</ref> Dosukoi was the sixth competitor to advance to the semi-finals.

The fourth battle stage was fought in an area with ascending and descending platforms. [[Kuririn]] fought with joy, easily defeating every opponent with a smile on his face. It was only when he realized that [[Piccolo]], [[Son Gohan]], and [[Future Trunks]] were fighting nearby that his mood dimmed and he realized that he was outmatched. Kuririn continued fighting but had not cleared his stage before the platform he was on began to tilt. As everyone scrambled for a handhold, Kuririn was able to find purchase on the edge of the ring. Once everyone else had fallen off, Kuririn became the winner by default. He was the third combatant to make it to the semi-finals.

==Synopsis==
Piccolo passes away after admitting to Gohan he appreciated the time they had spent together. And once Piccolo dies, God vanishes as well. Gohan's rage takes over, and he attacks Nappa but succeeds in nothing but draining his own power. Nappa prepares to finish off Gohan, but Goku arrives at the last moment to save him. Upon learning of his friends' deaths, Goku's anger begins to rise, but Gohan and Kuririn remain surprised at how calm and sure of himself Goku is. Goku declares he will fight Nappa alone. The others doubt Goku's abilities, but Goku easily dodges Nappa's attacks.

==Synopsis==
Carrying out his secret plan, Piccolo grabs Nappa's tail, the Saiyan weak spot. But since Nappa has strengthened his tail, all the attempt does is leave Piccolo open to Nappa's counterattack. Kuririn’s new special attack, the Kienzan, is likewise dodged by Nappa. As the danger continues, Gohan and the others sense the approaching Goku’s ki. Concerned at Goku's battle power readout, Vegeta orders Nappa to kill the three of them before Goku arrives. After being angered by Gohan’s counterattack, Nappa fires a tremendous energy bullet at him. At the last moment, Piccolo spreads out his body to cover Gohan and takes the full brunt of the blast.

Unable to wait for so long, Nappa leaves the battle site to alleviate his boredom, killing the nearby television news crew, wiping out a flotilla of warships, and blowing up a city. Three hours then pass without Goku's arrival, and Piccolo and the others fight Nappa once again. Meanwhile, after crossing the Serpent Road, Goku arrives in the lower world and flies off on Kinto-Un.

Tenshinhan, enraged at the loss of Chiaotzu, throws himself into the fight against Nappa but cannot even defend himself, let alone land an attack. While Nappa is distracted with Tenshinhan, Piccolo recruits Kuririn and Gohan for a surprise attack; however, at the last moment, Gohan gets scared and runs away. Even Piccolo and Kuririn's doppelganger attacks are ineffective, so that there is nothing they can do but weather Nappa's counterattack. Tenshinhan musters the last of his energy and fires a one-handed Kikōhō, killing himself in the process, but even this does not faze Nappa. After having heard the others express their hope that Goku show up to the battle, Vegeta announces that he will stop the battle for three hours to give Goku a chance to arrive.

==Synopsis==
As Bulma cries over Yamcha's death, of which she and the others at Kame House are aware from watching a television broadcast of the battle, Kame-Sen’nin consoles her by saying that Yamcha can be brought back to life with the Dragon Balls. The ki blast fired by Kuririn defeats three of the Saibaimen, and Piccolo destroys the surviving one, but Vegeta and Nappa are uninjured. After getting Vegeta’s permission to fight against all five of them on his own, Nappa knocks off Tenshinhan’s left arm. Chiaotzu clings to Nappa’s back and self-destructs. But even with this, Nappa is unaffected.

Vegeta suggests they stage a game of one-on-one, so first Tenshinhan faces off against a single Saibaiman. The Saibaiman shoots acid from its head, but Tenshinhan defeats it. Vegeta destroys the Saibaiman, telling the rest not to hold back. Next, Yamcha chooses to fight in place of Kuririn, but the Saibaiman he defeats latches onto him and self-destructs, killing Yamcha. Kuririn is furious and prepares to launch a counter attack.

==Synopsis==
Vegeta and Nappa emerge from the two space pods. Nappa wipes out East City in a single blast, and he and Vegeta fly to Piccolo and Gohan’s island in search of the Dragon Balls. Kuririn shows up Piccolo and Gohan's location moments before the Saiyan arrive. They face off against Vegeta and Nappa, and Piccolo learns for the first time that he is a Namekian when he is told so by Nappa. At Vegeta’s order, Nappa plants some seeds in the ground, and from them six creatures called Saibaimen are born.

Having reached the end of his training, Goku tests out the Kaiō-ken as well as the Genki-Dama, an attack generated by borrowing energy from surrounding lifeforms. After connecting with other powerful aliens to travel through space and subjugate other planets, the God of Planet Vegeta summoned meteors to wipe them all out, reducing the race to only four people, including Goku. Goku's anger at his people motivates him to continue his training with Gregory and, after two weeks, Goku succeeds in hitting him. Meanwhile, Kuririn and the others finish their training at the temple.

==Synopsis==
On Planet Kaiō, Goku meets the pun-loving Kaiō. Before accepting Goku as a student, Kaiō requires that Goku make him laugh with a pun of his own. Once Goku succeeds, the training begins. However, Goku can barely move due to the planet having a gravity ten times that of earth. In order to have him overcome this deficiency, Kaiō orders Goku to chase down and catch his pet monkey, Bubbles. After three weeks of attempts, Goku succeeds in catching Bubbles and conquering the gravity, leading Kaiō to wonder if Goku might be able to master the Kaiō-ken.

In a deviation from the manga, where it took Goku 40 days to catch Bubbles, the anime has Goku complete the same task in three weeks so that the remainder of that time can be used in his anime-exclusive training with Gregory in the following episode.

==Synopsis==
In the middle of the night, during Gohan and Piccolo's training, Gohan becomes suddenly wild and hostile towards Piccolo. Even more unexpectedly, the full moon reappears, despite Piccolo having destroyed it half a year earlier. And when Gohan's tail grows back, he once again transforms into an Ōzaru, putting Piccolo's life in danger. Piccolo eventually deduces that the island they are on is also home to the spaceship in which Goku arrived, and it is still transmitting attack orders and projecting a simulation of the full moon. Piccolo redirects his attacks from the "moon" to the spaceship, and once it is destroyed, Gohan returns to normal. Meanwhile, Goku reaches the end of the Serpent Road and discovers Kaiō’s planet.

==Synopsis==
After washing up on shore, Gohan is saved by some children who lost their homes and parents in a tsunami two years ago. However, the day after they befriend Gohan, orphanage employees arrive with the police, who capture the children. Thinking of their future, the teenager Pigero doesn’t save them, and escapes with Gohan. Gohan returns to Mt. Paozu, but thinking of the orphans who endured even without their parents, he heads back without meeting Chi-Chi.

God takes Goku's body to the afterlife to meet with Great King Enma, the judge of the dead. God says that before Goku will be brought back to life with the Dragon Balls, he will train under Kaiō, who stands at the peak of all the gods in the universe. After receiving permission from Enma-daiō to meet Kaiō, Goku begins running along the Serpent Road, said to be as long as a million kilometers. Meanwhile, Piccolo steals the unconscious Gohan from Bulma and the others, and takes him to a deserted land. Upon testing out Gohan’s dormant power, Piccolo tells Gohan to strengthen himself so as to be able to draw that power out.

Gohan bursts from the spaceship and launches himself at Raditz, managing to crack the Saiyan's armor. However, following the attack Gohan immediately reverts to his more docile state. Raditz decides to kill Gohan, but Goku sneaks up from behind and immobilizes Raditz. At Goku's insistence, Piccolo once again fires his Makankōsappō, which pierces both Goku and Raditz. Standing over the dying Raditz, Piccolo boasts that the Dragon Balls will most likely be used to resurrect Goku, causing Raditz to remark that the two remaining Saiyans will now most likely head to earth to attain the Dragon Balls for themselves. Bulma and the others arrive in time to witness Goku pass away.

==Synopsis==
Raditz takes Gohan away with him, and as Goku and the others formulate a plan, Piccolo appears. Piccolo says that in order to defeat Raditz, who is interfering with his world domination, he will temporarily join forces with Goku, and Goku agrees. The two use the Dragon Radar to locate Gohan, who is wearing a hat with the Four-Star Ball on it. Upon arriving, a fight with Raditz ensues, but Goku and Piccolo are overwhelmed by his power. What’s more, they are rendered speechless when they hear that the other two Saiyan are even stronger than him.
