"Dragon Ball Kai" (often abbreviated as Kai), known internationally as "Dragon Ball Z Kai", is a Japanese animated television series produced by Toei Animation. The series is a "revised", re-edited version of the Dragon Ball Z TV series, produced for a high-definition (HD) presentation and features re-recorded dialogue, new music, updated sound effects, and new digital effects. The first 13 episodes feature a formal title card stating that Dragon Ball Kai is a "Commemorative Encore of the Broadcast's 20th Anniversary" and is an "Akira Toriyama Original Cut Version" of the series. The series' title, specifically "Kai", was provided by Akira Toriyama.
Plot
Five peaceful years have passed since Goku's victory over Piccolo in the 23rd Tenka'ichi Budōkai and his marriage to Chi-Chi, when a mysterious alien warrior arrives on Earth in search of "Kakarrot". The alien eventually finds Goku, identifying him as Kakarrot, and introduces himself as Goku's older brother, Raditz. He proclaims that Goku is actually a Saiyan, the strongest warrior race in the universe, that was sent to Earth to exterminate humanity. From here the series takes to the stars, with even stronger and stronger opponents appearing before Goku and friends.

History
Japan
In early 2009, Toei Animation officially announced that a "refreshed" version of the Dragon Ball Z TV series, re-titled Dragon Ball Kai (改; Kai meaning "renewed" or "revised"), was being produced for a high-definition presentation in honor of its 20th anniversary. The first episode of Dragon Ball Kai aired on 05 April 2009 as part of Fuji TV's new hour-long Sunday morning anime block, "Dream 9". The block began with Dragon Ball Kai at 9:00AM and was followed by Toei Animation's other mega-hit anime series, One Piece, at 9:30AM. This marked the first time the franchise held a regular television time slot since Dragon Ball GT ended in November 1997.

During its original production, filler material was incorporated into the Dragon Ball Z TV series in order to stretch out story elements and avoid catching up with the concurrent weekly manga serialization. With no weekly serialization constraining Dragon Ball Kai, and the storyline already established, the series was able to cut out much of this material and move the story along with a faster tempo in an attempt to create a higher "sense of action". In addition, unlike the previous TV series, each episode's prologue and next episode preview could be produced in advance.

Saiyan to Cell Arc (Phase 1: 2009-2011)
The majority of the first phase of the Dragon Ball Kai series (episodes 1 to 98) is comprised of footage from Dragon Ball Z, which was digitally scanned and remastered by Q-TEC, a post-production company specializing in film video transferring and restoration. In addition, re-animated scenes drawn by the Philippines branch of Toei Animation were intermixed within the existing footage in order to reduce "extreme changes in brightness", "replace cuts that had degraded over the years", and to correct animation errors or inconsistencies from the original series. While the series was remastered in a 4:3 fullscreen format, it was subsequently broadcast in a cropped 16:9 widescreen format due to Japan's new broadcasting standards in an effort to transition from analogue to digital broadcasting. However, all of the high-definition Blu-ray releases featured this original fullscreen format, as opposed to the DVD releases, which featured the widescreen format used in the series' broadcast.

Although the series was consistently seeing high rating shares, it was ultimately canceled in March 2011 following the conclusion of the Cell story arc, presumably due to low merchandising sales, and replaced with the Toriko animated TV series. Shortly before the series' end, Toei Animation acknowledged issues of possible musical infringement in the series' background music and promptly removed Kenji Yamamoto's score, replacing it with Shunsuke Kikuchi's original score from Dragon Ball Z. The last two broadcast episodes (96 & 97) of the series exclusively featured Shunsuke Kikuchi's score, along with all subsequent re-airings and home video releases of the series.

Due to the horrific earthquake that struck Japan on 11 March 2011, the series' broadcast was delayed one week and consequently the final episode of the series was not aired as originally scheduled. It was later included as a special unaired episode on the series' home video release.

Majin Buu Arc (Phase 2: 2014-2015)
In November 2012, Mayumi Tanaka (Kuririn) revealed that production of Dragon Ball Kai was again underway, continuing on with the Majin Buu arc this time, although it was being produced exclusively for international distribution. Despite this, in February 2014, an announcement in V-Jump unveiled that "a new era of Kai" would be returning to Fuji TV in Japan and reclaiming its original time slot. The second phase of the series premiered on 06 April 2014 and the Sunday morning block, reuniting Dragon Ball Kai and One Piece once again, was renamed "Strong 9".

Unlike the first phase of the series, the original Dragon Ball Z footage for the Majin Buu arc was digitally scanned and remastered by Toei internally.
"Dragon Ball GT" (often abbreviated as DBGT, or simply GT) is a Japanese animated television series produced by Toei Animation. The animated series is an original story created by Toei Animation and a continuation of the Dragon Ball manga series by Akira Toriyama, although the author had virtually no involvement with its production. The Dragon Ball manga had previously been adapted by Toei Animation into two preceding TV series: Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z.

The Dragon Ball GT TV series is comprised of 64 episodes and one feature length TV specials that were broadcast from 07 February 1996 to 19 November 1997 on Fuji TV. The series held an average household TV ratings share of 14.6% during its initial broadcast run, with episode 2 receiving the highest rating share at 19.7%.

Plot
Five years (10 years in the FUNimation dub) have passed and all is peaceful around the world as Goku and Uub finish their training at God's Palace. However, this peace soon ends as Pilaf makes a terrifying wish, transforming Goku into a child. The rush is on to retrieve all seven Dark Dragon Balls from around the Universe before the Earth and its inhabitants are destroyed. While searching for the Dark Dragon Balls, Goku and the others encounter even stronger opponents and stumble across the lone survivor of the Tsufruian race, once thought wiped out by the Saiyans.

History
Japan
Following the success and popularity of the Dragon Ball Z TV series, Toei Animation decided to extend the franchise beyond just the scope of the original manga. The new series was titled Dragon Ball GT, with "GT" being short for "Grand Touring". Author Akira Toriyama later elaborated on his involvement with the series:

This new anime original series picked up right where the previous series had left off, and was initially slated to expand Akira Toriyama's "Dragon World" into the far reaches of the Dragon Ball universe, with Goku as a child once again. Taking over the Dragon Ball Z time slot at 7:00PM every Wednesday on Fuji TV, the first episode of Dragon Ball GT aired on 07 February 1996.

Beyond creating the title and logo of the series, providing designs for the main characters, and drawing a few promotional illustrations, original manga author Akira Toriyama had very little involvement with the series. The main staff of the series also experienced some significant changes, with the majority leaving to pursue other endeavors. Veteran animator Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru entirely took over the role of character designer and Akihito Tokunaga was brought on as the series' new musical composer. Numerous new producers were also brought on board from both Toei Animation and Fuji TV to help determine the series' plot and development.

Unlike the previous two series, the TV ratings quickly dropped as the series progressed and much of the overwhelming interest once seen in the franchise began to rapidly dwindle. After only 64 episodes and one feature length TV special, the Dragon Ball GT anime series came to an end when the final episode aired on 19 November 1997. For the first time in over a decade, there was no new episode of Dragon Ball to be seen. The franchise would go on to see considerable reruns of all three series in Japan on various cable TV networks, even to this day. However in early-2009, Toei Animation and Fuji TV would reunite to bring the beloved franchise back to syndicated TV, catapulting Dragon Ball Z into the digital high-definition age with an unexpected re-cut anniversary series — Dragon Ball Kai.
Toei Animation (Japan)
VHS

Unlike many other countries around the world, the Dragon Ball GT TV series had no proper home video release in Japan following its initial television run. This was in large part due to the high VHS retail pricing at the time and the continuous re-runs of the series on numerous cable and satellite channels.

DVD Box Sets

Beginning in 2003, Toei Animation, in cooperation with the DVD manufacturing company Pony Canyon, began releasing a series of four box sets in Japan covering the entire Dragon Ball TV series property, which were dubbed the "Dragon Boxes". By mid-2005, all three TV series had been released, although out of chronological order, which marked the first time that any of these properties were available on a home video format in Japan.
Individual DVD Volumes

Following the release of the TV series Dragon Boxes, Toei announced the release of their individual discs, giving fans that didn't own the Dragon Boxes a chance to own these properties. Unfortunately, these individual discs wouldn't contain any of the extras that came with the Dragon Boxes, but instead special diorama sets were created exclusively for those that purchased all of the individual discs.
History
Japan
As the Dragon Ball anime series approached one of the manga's major turning points, the anime staff approached Akira Toriyama about changing the name of the anime series to help change the "image" of the series. Thinking he would be ending the series sometime soon, Toriyama decided to signify this by simply adding the last letter in the alphabet to the series name. Little did he know that Dragon Ball Z would go on to be one of the most successful, popular, and recognized action anime series of all time.

Taking over the Dragon Ball time slot at 7:00PM every Wednesday on Fuji TV, the first episode of Dragon Ball Z aired on 26 April 1989. The main staff of the series remained relatively unchanged from its predecessor and they continued on right where they had left off the week before. The story picked up five years after the end of Dragon Ball, and would greater explore Goku's mysterious background. With each villain stronger than the last, the series' battles and popularity quickly escalated, reaching new heights. The series TV ratings were amongst the best in Japan, with Dragon Ball Z remaining in the "Top 10" rated animated shows during its entire run.

In May 1995, Toriyama announced he would be ending the manga series after 519 chapters, spelling the inevitable end for one of the most successfully popular action anime series of all time. After 291 episodes, 2 feature length TV specials, and 13 theatrical films, the Dragon Ball Z anime series came to an end when the final episode aired on 31 January 1996. However, Toei Animation had no intention of letting the fabled franchise die just yet and created an anime-only series of their very own — Dragon Ball GT.
Toei Animation (Japan)
VHS

Unlike many other countries around the world, the Dragon Ball Z TV series had no proper home video release in Japan following its initial television run.

"Dragon Ball" (often abbreviated as DB) is a Japanese animated television series produced by Toei Animation (formerly Toei Dōga in Japanese, though translated identically). The animated series is adapted from the first 194 chapters of the Dragon Ball manga series by Akira Toriyama, which was originally published in the Japanese manga anthology Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1984 to 1995. The remaining 325 chapters of the manga were adapted into the Dragon Ball Z TV series.

The Dragon Ball TV series is comprised of 153 episodes that were broadcast from 26 February 1986 to 19 April 1989 on Fuji TV. ==Plot==
In search of the seven Dragon Balls, Bulma crosses paths with a mysterious young boy by the name of Son Goku. Realizing Goku's unnatural strength, she convinces him to join her in search of the remaining Dragon Balls. Along the way the two encounter many friends and foes, all in search of the same thing... the Dragon Balls.

History
Japan
Following the success and popularity of Akira Toriyama's new manga series Dragon Ball, Toei Animation announced it would be creating an animated adaptation of the series. The first episode aired 26 February 1986, after the series first premiered in Weekly Shōnen Jump a little over a year earlier. The series took over the 7:00PM time slot every Wednesday on Fuji TV which was previously held by Toriyama's other hit anime series, Dr. Slump – Arale-chan. This time slot became known as the "Toriyama Block" amongst fans, as one of his series was broadcast in this specific time slot for over 18 years.

Much of the main staff from Dr. Slump would remain to work on Dragon Ball, including Minoru Okazaki as series director, Shunsuke Kikuchi as musical composer, Keizō Shichijō as series planner, and Minoru Maeda as the chief animator. In March 1987, the Red Ribbon Army arc of the series featured a humorous cross-over with characters from the Dr. Slump series as Toriyama had originally done in the manga, forever linking the two series. As the story progressed, Dragon Ball transitioned from a gag series into a much more action-oriented series, further increasing the series' popularity.

However, with the anime nearing one of the manga's major turning points, the anime staff decided it was necessary to change the name of the anime series to denote such. Over the course of its three years the Dragon Ball series had come to a total of 153 episodes and three theatrical films, all of which were based on previously established events in the TV anime series. Unfortunately, the series is often overlooked by fans and merely remembered as a small stepping stone to one of the most successfully popular action anime series of all time – Dragon Ball Z.

North America
In the 1980s, Harmony Gold purchased the distribution rights for Dragon Ball and at least five episodes were dubbed as pilots for the series. The first and third movies were also dubbed and edited together to form a single, longer film which was aired on several small stations around the United States. The pilot episodes were test-marketed on various independent networks, and while most character names were changed (Goku became "Zero"), the dialogue and music were mostly kept intact. With a underwhelming response to the episodes, Harmony Gold abruptly discontinued work on the series and opted not to renew the rights to the franchise.

In 1994, FUNimation Productions, headed by Gen Fukunaga, acquired the distribution rights to dub into English and broadcast Dragon Ball in syndication through a connection with his uncle, Nagafumi Hori, a director and producer for Toei Animation's live-action series. Actors associated with the Ocean Group, located in Vancouver, Canada, were hired and thirteen episodes (as well as the first movie) were dubbed. The dubbed episodes were edited for content and the original score was entirely replaced. A full 26-28 episode season was originally planned, but following the series' first-run syndication in the fall of 1995, its production was ultimately canceled due to low ratings.

Following its subsequent success with Dragon Ball Z, FUNimation announced in early-2001 that it would begin in-house dubbing of the original Dragon Ball television series, and in contrast to its dub of Dragon Ball Z, the original Japanese musical score would be retained. Prior to beginning work on episodes, the third Dragon Ball movie was dubbed and released on VHS in 2000. The first thirteen episodes were re-dubbed and aired as a part of a 28 episode test season, beginning on Cartoon Network in August 2001. After receiving positive responses to the first season of episodes, FUNimation continued production of the series and completed all 153 episodes, with the fourth and final season airing during the fall of 2003.
Toei Animation (Japan)
VHS

Unlike many other countries around the world, the Dragon Ball TV series had no proper home video release in Japan following its initial television run.

Following the release of the TV series Dragon Boxes, Toei announced the release of their individual discs, giving fans that did not own the Dragon Boxes a chance to own these properties. Unfortunately, these individual discs would not contain any of the extras that came with the Dragon Boxes, but instead special diorama sets were created exclusively for those that purchased all of the individual discs.
