Abra likely shares a name pun source with his son Dabra, both taken from the magical phrase "[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abracadabra abracadabra]" (アブラカダブラ ''aburakadabura''). For Abra's name, the first ア was extended (アー) to make アーブラ (''Ābura''). Another character named "Abra" (アブラ ''abura'') appears in [[Toyotarō|Toyotarō's]] ''[[Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission]]'' manga series, spelled without the extended first syllable.

It is also possible that Abra's name is inspired by "lard/fat" (脂 ''abura'') and/or "oil" (油 ''abura''), which would line up with [[Gomah|Gomah's]] name coming from "sesame" as in "sesame oil" (ごま油 ''goma abura'').
